Jason Wu For Target Is Latest Designer Collaboration (UPDATED)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/03/2011 6:58 am Updated: 12/03/2011 4:12 am

After a barrage of tweets and five clues provided by @TargetStyle, the latest designer to collaborate with Target is...

Jason Wu!

The news came last night and was confirmed today by Women's Wear Daily, as the retailer spent Sunday dropping hints via Twitter (see all five clues in the slideshow below).

The collab is Target's first following the Missoni for Target launch on September 8, which saw scores of shoppers storm Target.com and Target stores in search of the colorful pieces. In the process, ravenous fashionistas crashed the website and drove savvy shoppers to resell their Missoni for Target pieces on eBay for thousands of dollars.

So needless to say, a Target collaboration bodes well for Wu.

Wu told Women's Wear Daily, "The exciting thing about this limited edition collection of affordable women’s wear and accessories is that it allows me to reach a wider audience and bring my designs to people who may not have been able to purchase them before."

Such as... Michelle Obama? The First Lady has been a huge Wu fan since she made him a household name, wearing one of his original designs at the 2009 Inaugural Ball. But Obama is also a Target fan, seen shopping at the big-box store just last week.

All of which makes Jason Wu for Target the perfect storm of FLOTUS faves -- and has us so totally freaking out. We will be first in line when the collection drops.

When will that be? That details has not yet been announced. Stay tuned for more info and in the meantime, click over to WWD.com to read more.

UPDATE: As per an official Jason Wu tweet, the collection will be available starting February 5, 2012. There's also a newly released teaser video posted on Youtube by Target to get you excited (as if you weren't already). Shoppers, start your engines...

Here's your first clue Michelle Obama has transcended politics.

Anyone who can buy clothing at Target--at a price which almost every middle class family can afford--and make it work on the worldwide stage needs to become the US Fashion Czar the minute her husband is unseated.

I am a moderate conservative who thinks Michelle Obama is one of the most dynamic First Ladies since Jackie Kennedy. She has style sense and a warmth that appeals globally.

Hopefully her husband will fade into good works and a couple of books after one term in office. Michelle needs to be our ambassador of style for the next decade or so.

Funny how it came out a couple days later that Jason Wu, Michelle's favorite designer, inks a deal with Target to carry a line of his clothing. And the White House had tipped off the AP photographers as to Michelle's whereabouts. Quid pro quo?

Doubtful. I think the First Lady can afford to pay full price, and does, for the clothing she gets at Target. Not to mention Jason Wu's designs aren't all that pricy even if you don't get them there.

What is wrong with showing the First Lady pushing a cart in a store you or I could afford to shop in? Thrift is not to be sneezed at, especially when exhibited by the First Family.

What I got out of the picture was that it was perfectly OK to be normal.

The shirtwaist dresses with normal hemlines and the jeweled collars were classic and gorgeous.
That being said, I have never seen anything in Target that isn't made of terrible fabric. Shopping the sale racks in Macy's one can find better clothing for the same price or less. Problem is you can't also buy a pound of hamburger and light bulbs at the same time as clothing, at Macy's or my fave, Lord and Taylor. Then again the clothes at Target probably won't last as long as the lightbulbs one may purchase there.

it's true. that's my biggest problem with target. the fabric is terrible and it sdoesn't last very long and has a way of looking very cheap very quickly. and, slowly but surely, the prices aren't that great either.

How can a normal person tell if any of that stuff would look good on them, those girls are walking bones. What size are on them -0? Nope I don't think I'd even give it a try, he is clearly targeting the teen age set, not the women wtih the money, can't wear that to the office, or grocery shopping or to the senior citizen meeting or to baseball practice with the kids. He needs to be more versitle

My Goodness some of you need to get off your high horses ! Is it me,or can Michelle Obama not do anything right by Huffington Post standards? So Jason Wu happens to be a favored designer of Michelle Obama, he's also popular and a great designer. Anna Wintour herself approved of this man. And if that dragon lady approves you know you're good! His designs are clean, simple, and timeless with a pop of color. To any woman with a shred of fashion sense over the age of 14 these are all good things. I personaly like owning the same design in several different colors and prints (hi there pencil skirt, crewneck sweater, and pumps). Some of you with your mom jeans, and keds need to get off your digital high horses. Get a grip, get a life, and get a wardrobe.

P.S. Congrats Jason on his colaboration with Target. I can definitely respect a designer who brings his clothing to the masses. I hope to see some really great things.

I didn't see anything great or different about his clothes, they look like anything you can find in the store made by somebody else and probably cheaper, too. I think if people do buy them, they just buy them for his name.
