'Dancing With The Stars': J.R. Martinez's Unusual Road To Stardom

Jr Martinez Dancing With The Stars Interview

You may not have known J.R. Martinez before "Dancing With the Stars," but chances are this Iraq war veteran and "All My Children" star will be the one to beat this season. He scored at the top of the leaderboard in week one with his elegant waltz with professional partner Karina Smirnoff, and then in week two, he stunned the audience with his lively -- and highly technical -- jive.

However, Martinez isn't just setting the bar for the dance floor, he's also challenging the idea of what it means to be a leading man in Hollywood. The actor's road to "Dancing" followed a very different path than those of his competitors.

"I'm representing all of our vets," Martinez told The Huffington Post. "The thing is, a lot of our vets come home and they feel displaced, and they don't feel like their voice matters, so for me to be a spokesman and have that honor to educate America about who we are and what we are, it's like I'm doing my job. I'll never have the opportunity to go back to Iraq and serve my country, but I tell people this is my way of serving. I don't have a weapon in my hand, and I don't have a uniform on my body, but my uniform now is my scars and weapon is my words, so I'm still serving."

Martinez joined the military at 19, and in 2003, he was deployed to Iraq. After serving two months as an United States Army infantryman, he was badly injured when his Humvee truck ran over a landmine. He suffered a coma and intense burns on over 40 percent of his body, lost most of the hair on his head and one of his ears.

Following his accident, Martinez spent over two years in the hospital, undergoing 33 surgeries in just 34 months, including skin grafts and tissue expansions, to repair the damage to his body. Even though there were times when he felt like giving up, his unwavering determination carried him through his difficult recovery. "I was in the hospital for two-and-a-half years, so I definitely believe that my injury and that recovery process gave me my determination and my will to go out there and fight," said Martinez. "When the body doesn't want to go on, the mind continues to fight."

Surprisingly, it was during this recovery period that his mother unknowingly put the idea of soap stardom into his head.

"I remember being in the hospital, and my mother would always watch Spanish soaps, called telenovelas," recalled Martinez. "And with me not being able to get up and do anything for myself, I was stuck watching telenovelas, and I couldn't do anything about it. That was our bonding time. I actually made a comment to my mother when I was in the hospital that one day I was going to be on a soap, and she laughed, and I was like, 'You just watch!' [laughs]."

After starting a successful career as a motivational speaker for veterans, Martinez wanted to find a platform where he could reach more people in a different capacity, so when the opportunity came to guest star on ABC's "All My Children," Martinez jumped at the chance to play a veteran on screen.

"Having been on the show for three years, I can honestly say that 'All My Children' is bigger than me, and it means so much to a lot of people," said Martinez. "For it to go off the air now, it's tough, but I'm still forever grateful for it."

When it comes to "Dancing With the Stars," Martinez's decision to join the Season 13 cast didn't come as instinctively. In fact, the Army vet would have declined the offer, if it hadn't been for his determined fans.

"My fans would say, 'You would be great on "Dancing With the Stars,"' and I would sort of entertain them with the idea, but I never really put much thought into it," said Martinez. "What really made me sign on was the fact that I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone. That's how we grow and continue learning; that's how we create those memories that we'll never forget. At the same time, I just want to share my story with as many people as I can."

It was his desire to share his story that made him an immediate fan favorite. In a season full of reality stars, television hosts and former singing sensations, Martinez stands out from his fellow competitors and not only because of his scars, but also for his mission. He doesn't just want to challenge himself to step out of his comfort zone, he also wants to challenge others to face their own fears and limitations.

"In this life, all you need is for someone to believe in you," said Martinez. "You can go a long way if someone believes in you. I've been incredibly lucky to have so many people believe in me, and I want to help people believe in themselves. There are people that didn't know who I was before, and that's okay because it's not like I'm Brad Pitt, but because of 'Dancing,' they know now, and I get to reach millions."

And if you think there's any competition between the "Dancing" stars off the dance floor, think again.

"There's no backstabbing and no drama," said Martinez. "It's just fun to watch people step out of their comfort zones and do things that they've never done before and witness them grow so much throughout the entire process."

When asked if he'd expected to be on top of the leaderboard in weeks one and two, the actor responded modestly.

"No," said Martinez, "But then again, I didn't have any expectations in regards to score and the leaderboard. Honestly, all I kept thinking about was my footwork and my extensions and just enjoying the moment and focussing on Karina [Smirnoff]. That big turn we did, we almost took out. In rehearsals we would try it and I would mess up and drop her. I was like, 'Oh my god, you're going to be broken by the time week one starts.' But then ultimately, we decided to keep it, and it came out just beautiful."

To watch J.R. Martinez and his partner Karina Smirnoff hit the dance floor on "Dancing With the Stars," tune into the week 3 performances Monday, Oct. 3 at 8PM ET on ABC.

I had forgotten most of the backstory to Mr. J.R. Martinez. After the media is done with you, you disappear into the fog and must try to make life what you can despite whatever injuries, health issues that crop up. The fact that he did what he had to to recover, go on with his life, is an inspiration and I think a lot of vets would love a visit from him.

To say that he is an American Hero is to put it lightly. It isn't always easy to come back from such devastation, as the news media is constantly reminding us of the negativity of the returning veterans. Is this ww2, korea, vetnam war treatment of returning soldiers all over again. I thought we Americans had decided to change that, to do whatever we can to help them reconnect, to living life off a battlefield, living a normal (or as normal as can be considering what they saw, did, heard.) becoming a part of a thriving society once more.

When you see Carrie Ann cry at a performance, you know she was moved. But was she moved more so by JR's backstory and seeing his performance, or was she moved because of the dance itself? Everybody on the show has a backstory. His is the most, for a lack of a better word, memorable--because he was in the service, extremely critically injured, with a tough road back to 'recovery,' such as it is. I'm sure his backstory was the one and only reason why the producers of All My Children wrote his storyline. He's proud to be an American and so am I.. but that's not the only reason I vote. And I have not just voted for him. The couple that most moves me is the couple that dances as one...be they bring me to tears or laughter!

JR, you are absolutely correct. I would fan you for this if I could.

J. R. played an equally amazing character on All My Children which sadly was destroyed by Wall St. greed. Brian Fronz gutted the show and the lives of those on it to bring The Chew to life for 40% less cost and more profits to the shareholders. No wonder people have rallied behin Occupy Wall St. Good luck on Dancing with the Stars!

What an awesome guy. What happened in Iraq could not stop him from his destiny to inspire. It only made the story of himself and those he represents (our beloved veterans), more visible to us all. God Bless Our Troops, God Bless Our Leaders, and Please God Bless America and Restore Her Again.

I simply cannot describe how much I admire and respect this 27 year old man. The adversities he has faced far outstrip those of his so-called peers who can only manage to fall down drunk on NJ boardwalks, use rehabs like a revolving door, exploit their children for money and fame and are somehow "ashamed" when their sex videos are made public. I admire his courage, I applaud his humility, I am proud to see him set an example of what it means to be a true hero. I see nothing but great things in his future, and he deserves nothing but the best. He is a hero, an inspiration to all of us.

I commend JR on his ability to keep a positive attitude and move on with his life. I don't agree with his pro war stance - I don't belive him to be an american hero - He was not drafted in the military he joined on his accord. Whatever happened to him while in service was not an act of bravery but an act of duty. He needs to keep his Pro War crap to himself! He has pushed it a bit too far what is this guy a poster child for the Bush Wars? You can dance buddy but stop milking it. You say you've accepted the cards you were dealt - then stop playing the sympathy card - I for one could care less about any of it! You did not do anything extraordinary and you're not a hero you're a mna that was in the wrong place at the wrong time and you signed up for it no one asked you to join buddy- so stop playing that card - I'm not impressed and I don't appreciate any of it!

If it were not for us US Vets, and currently serving US Military Personnel. You would not be able to say the things that you are saying! The reason why we have to go to war is because the political system failed to do their job of diplomacy. When you fire your weapon down range to the opposing forces you have failed your mission of tactical and strategic deterrence. You sir have no idea what the responsibilities are to have the uniform on and perform a mission of peace. You need to study military and political history.

"The reason why we have to go to war is because the political system failed to do their job of diplomacy."

I would like to say you are correct about this, but that would be forcing me to admit that all wars and international issues can be solved with diplomacy, which you and I both know can never happen. So your statement, as I have quoted above, is completely incorrect.

JR That was awesome. I have been atching your career on All My Children unfold also. Now that All My Children is off the air, I am still watching you on Dancing with the Stars. As an Army Vet you have given us a great insparation that all things are possible. Keep representing and good luck.

I Hope JR Wins! He is my favorite!! His story is very touching, I got choked up... In my eyes he is a real Hero! He is very positive about everything, I noticed since dancing with the stars started.... He doesn't have any experience in dancing either, but you can't tell is is a great dancer, and doesn't complain at all if he is hurting. If he is hurting you can't tell. Other people on there seem to complain about their body hurting and hurting, and they haven't gone though nearly anything that JR has gone through.. God Bless Him...
