TSA Introduces New Technology to Spot Fake Documents

Tsa Document

First Posted: 10/03/11 05:48 PM ET Updated: 12/03/11 05:12 AM ET

The TSA will be testing new technology that will increase agents ability to spot fake documents, the agency announced Monday.

The technology, which will be tested at select airports in 2012, is called Credential Authentication Technology - Boarding Pass Scanning Systems (CAT-BPSS). It helps catch altered and fraudulent passenger identification credentials and boarding passes.

“This technology will automatically verify passenger identification documents and boarding passes to further enhance security,” said TSA Administrator John S. Pistole in a press release. “This technology will help facilitate risk-based security, while making the process more effective and efficient."

$3.2 million will go towards the project, which includes the purchase of 30 systems from three vendors. CAT-BPSS is projected to replace current document verification methods.

In July, the TSA announced that it would deploy nationwide software modifications to millimeter wave Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) machines. These modifications, testing of which began in February, addressed the concern about "naked" images of passengers being generated in airport security.

The TSA also announced this summer plans to pilot a "known traveler" program to speed up the screening process, and the child screening process was revised.

I was watching this earlier this a.m.You have to have been flying for like 25 years, provide all kinds of personal info of course and it's only going to be for 4 states as of now. Then they will research you thuroughly and then they will do whatever it is they do to try to figure out if you could possibly be a terrorist etc and then after all of this is done they may or may not allow you to qualify for their progra.Of course they also have their special government reccomended safe flyers and as to who that covers they never did say I'm guessing government employee's perhaps etc

I travel frequently and have to got through these procedures almost every week. I've rarely been able to see the supposed "naked" images produced by the scanners. A couple of weeks ago I was able to sneak a shot of one of the screens in Brazil (the machines are similar the those in the USA). As a photographer I was then curious to know more. My conclusions are here:

It is about time. The TSA could make things very easy for citizens by having a program that verifies life-long citizens are genuine and protects them from the prodding and caressing that goes on during their "hands-on" security search. I feel like a victim of discrimination because I have an internal cardiac device and it requires the massage that I soon am going to have to pay a premium for. A true "trusted traveller" program would be relatively simply to implement. What really amazes me is the fact that these TSA guys are responsible for the security of the nation but they lacked the basic skills to verify their own employees were honest and not former felons. Absolutely amazing.....

Wait people this story has nothing to do with the actual headline that linked you here. Can Huffington post actually produce the link for who/how to qualify as they say in the home page?

Did you get to read the very last sentence of the article? lol

Now that a large amount of the flying public are traveling less and less because of the civil liberty intrusions, the airlines are going broke and the TSA probably finally realized that they're screening themselves out of jobs.

Gee....The TSA has already stepped all over the Constitution, Gone WAT BEYOND the bounds of decency, demonstrated absolutly no commonsense, and behaved in a manner that has been borderline STUPID and spent billions doing it. I got a feeling that the "revised method" is simply searching the little tykes in a room where no cellphone videos can be shot. Score another "touchdown" for stupid wasteful gov. boonedoggles in the football game of life!!

If they start planting bombs on children, won't you be gald they searched them first? These people who are out to do whatever they can will stop at nothing and no one to get what they want.

Are you really that afraid of these ying/yangs? Get some kahauna's will ya. I guess you were never a G.I. We are at war! People will die on both sides! That's what war is. If it's your turn to go, you'll die falling out of bed, can a body search prevent that?? Stop letting the ENEMY control your freedoms or leave this country so those who are WILLING to live free don't have YOUR TYPES( scared of shadows are we?) hindering the rest of us from LIVING WITHOUT REPRESSION! If you want freedom,LIVE FREE! If you want security from fear, crawl in a hole and pull the dirt over you! That is the ONLY way you can be certian you'll never be hurt by someone!!

Yet another HP headline that doesn't match the story. Can't you folks do anything right?
03:18 PM on 10/04/2011
The pictures they have NEVER work. Not to mention HP (AOL) CENSOR comments by NOT posting them. They run a lousy program that they refuse to fix.
04:14 PM on 10/04/2011
The pictures not working is probably caused by your end of the pipeline.

Anyone who is willing to die as a terrorist will buy a REAL boarding pass on a flight. Who is this going to catch, exactly? The would-be terrorist who is so cheap that they also plan to try and sneak onto the flight? Your tax dollars at work.
