Van Jones Calls On Progressives To Be More Like The Tea Party

First Posted: 10/03/11 03:08 PM ET Updated: 12/03/11 05:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Former White House environmental adviser Van Jones is calling on progressive activists to be more like the Tea Party in order to take back the momentum conservatives have built over the past two years.

In a speech at the Take Back The American Dream Conference in Washington, D.C. on Monday, Jones said that after studying everything he could about the Tea Party, he determined that progressives should move away from relying on a single leader to accomplish their goals.

"We have been on a one-sided offensive in this country where the worst people in America with the worst ideas have dominated the discussion," Jones said in a high-energy speech. "And I'm not mad at them. I'm not mad at the Tea Party. I'm not mad at them for being so loud. I'm mad at us for being so quiet."

Jones told the receptive crowd that the reason President Obama's campaign was so successful in 2008 was that it had progressive groups join together under a "meta-brand." After Obama's election, however, Jones said progressive groups became lazy and sat back.

In order to get their political power back, Jones proposed using his "Rebuild the Dream" movement as a new "meta-brand" to bring together progressive activists the same way Tea Party groups unite their members.

"We have to remember, [Lyndon Johnson] did not lead the civil rights movement," Jones said. "He signed a bunch of laws we liked, but he did not get out there and lead that movement. That was people like us right here in this room."

Citing the "Occupy Wall Street" protests spreading around the country and progressives who protested at congressional town halls in August, Jones said they were already recapturing momentum.

Earlier in the morning, a live feed from the Wall Street protests garnered a large showing of support at the conference. When Jones announced that marines would be voluntarily stepping in to defend the protesters from questionable police force, the audience erupted into a standing ovation.

Jones referred to Obama's more combative stance toward Republicans -- which conservatives have criticized as "class warfare" -- as something activists can push him to do more of as president.

"The White House is talking different because we are walking different," Jones said.

Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.) also told the audience they need to move beyond complaining and become more active.

"[Obama] got a lot of flack for 'take off your slippers,'" Edwards said. "But you know what? I say 'take off your high heels.' ... I also know where our battle lines are drawn, and I know that we can get there faster with our crowd than we can get there with their crowd."

Jones said his "Rebuild the Dream" movement would act as support for various local and national progressive activist groups. He introduced more than two dozen leaders of labor, issue-oriented groups, progressive media and other activists as "American Dream" movement leaders.

"It's our turn now. We let the warmongers have a turn for eight years, and they ruined this country," Jones said. "We're still spending $3 billion a week overseas on these wars. What if we had $3 billion just for Detroit? No, just for Appalachia. Just one week's worth, imagine what we could do."

Van Jones is 100% right. For too long we have been the silent majority on such issues as health care, the wars, taxes, etc. Those who are not suffering are the ones who are displaying their artificial hatred and perceived "suffering" at the hands of the government for too long. Yet they are not suffering. Those who are suffering are not being loud enough and need to make their voices heard.

....with the power a president now has we do have to be very careful ..now u know why It ticks me off so Much what Obama did the other day.
also If Paul is the nominee it may force Obama to do what we all agree on..END these WARS
Mr.Jones , read all the comments on this thread..it is a VERY good debate/discussion about Deregulation, why it would or would not be good to get rid of say the EPA, see if it makes sense to you,and if it doesn't..why ?
There is no other GOP candidate that has over 30 years of essay's speeches etc that you can look at,and see that he indeed can be trusted..you can't really trust any of the others ..I DON'T
and there is a big chance if they are nominee they WILL win..Obama has ticked alot of people off
Read this thread ..it is Paul supporters, libertarians and liberals debating MOSTLY why getting rid of EPA and other things is or is not a good idea....let us know what you think...maybe write a blog about it

..it puts the power back in the hands of the PEOPLE to Suethehell out of polluters..how long will a polluter last with millions constantly suing them,,for say FRACKING and setting our water on fire ! EPA isn't stopping it are they.
take the money saved from getting rid of things that are just money pits and don't really do what they are supposed to do.and put it into programs like Head Start if proven they work ( if they don't then make them work)
Mr.Jones of Paul is the GOP Nominee the worst that could happen for YOU is that he wins, but
if he wins it will NOT be a disaster for you..if someone like PERRY wins..it will be. do u get what I'm saying ? They are all facist, some are bigoted facist..NOT GOOD

ok MR Jones..maybe it's the pain meds..but I'm going to play deal maker. just roll yer eyes and humor me ok ?

Help us make Ron Paul the GOP Nominee ( He might beat Obama, but, then there is the age factor, against Obama's good looks and speech's)
if you STUDY Ron Paul you will understand he has this OCD condition with the constitution.
He believes a small government is less likely to abuse and economically runs smoother.
but look up the John Stossel interview with his 10 % opt out plan ( I think it would actually bring in MORE for social safety nets) Ron Paul would NOT use it for WARS and nation building.
he will also get rid of things that don't work like EPA ...(Covers ears)..don't scream at me.. :)
hear him and other libertarians out on that.. prt 1

The EPA works just fine. Neither you are Ron Paul are qualified to judge if the EPA works. Ron Paul is a Doctor not and environmental engineer and does not have any other knowledge remotely relevant to make that kind determination. Just because someone is elected to Congress does not make them an expert on everything. Yet for some reason people seem to think so.

Environmental regulations are based mathematical economic driven models. In other words the cost of not having them in place human health, monetary values of ecological damage such as water pollution, damage to fisheries and agricultural production.

Are balanced against the implementation costs of emissions/pollution abatement to industry. . The final emission limit or regulatory level is always set so the the Benefit exceed the cost. Without the EPA the Quality of life in the U.S would go to s.hit. Health care cost would sky rocket and the life expectancy would drop. I have worked in industry all my life and some of the materials used would do some serious damage.

An education (from Pat Robertson's theocratic Regent University), a coherent message (that has been pre-approved by the Fox echo chamber), and a few baths (in water polluted by the unregulated fracking industry), perhaps.

This is all we have left – civil disobedience. We have been kicked out our homes, robbed of retirement savings, kicked out of our jobs, while these Wall Street fat cats hardly ever noticed there was a recession. We bailed them out and when it comes time for them to repay us for our good deeds they turn around and spit in our faces. They continue to plunder and rob the treasury, they have accelerated the destruction of the ecosystem that sustains the human species. Soon, the masses will see that they must be stopped. I said on this post before, and I was basically ridiculed, that we are going to see the same kind of revolt right here in the America, that we saw in Tunisia, Egypt etc. When people are sad, they go cry in the corner somewhere, they complain about their plight amongst each other but nothing is done -you become a passive enabler to a monstrous evil. But when people get angry, they know no compromise, they lose all rationale and logic; all they know is that they are hurting who or what causes their pain must be stopped. This the genesis of something big. This Wall Street “sit in” is small and from the on start might seem inconsequential. But just like the fuse on a dynamite is the smallest part of the bomb, it is what ignites the bomb. Become a rebel or remain serfs.”

watch this video Mr.Jones http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTp2SnLpDWI
look at the signs....we don't agree on everything, but we want the same things..you disagree on how to best accomplish a fair and free society..I Believe Ron Pauls ideas are best..but not ALL his ideas ..I like some of Obama's too ( but I no longer Trust Obama) MAKE him do the right things.
I thought maybe if Ron Paul were the GOP nominee it would Force Obama to end the wars, restore civil liberties..maybe it will, but after that American was targeted..I just don't trust him anymore.
If Obama runs against an anti war pro civil Liberties candidate like Paul..he will be trying to OUT "PEACE" him rather than the debate be who has the best strategy to continue these fricken endless wars..but Obama has the edge..cause he is actually IN Power and can end them
if he wants to pander ..pander to that

The more I dig into Paul's philosophy the less inclined I would be to vote for him...Plus his last debate really showed how old and tried and worn he's getting..he's lost his mojo..
I have no problem with Obama ..I have no reason not to trust him..

I do..i voted for him after Paul lost nomination last time..because he was it appeared..to be against the patriot act, military commissions act,the wars, rendition and Gitmo.
he suckered me just like Bush before him did.
NOW he asassinated an American citizen without a trial..WE should all be upset about that.
all those upset over the guy who got the death sentence AFTER a trial..and yet 7 of 9 witnesses recanted ..dna was not there..yet he was STILL killed ?
YOU ALL should be upset over the American that was killed by Obama..there WAS NO OPEN TRIAL
we don't know if all the info they had on him was real..or the video faked
we don't know anything

also..the more you dig into his philosophy the more you understand that he has this OCD with the constitution. He has never lied to us,he has stood up for the constitution and liberty and against these wars, consistently since he started in politics.
that means we can trust him to KEEP or rather get Back the separation of powers..there is far too much power given to exec branch..that isn't safe.
you may trust Obama..but what about the next guy ?

What if some nut case gets into power ,with all the powers a president has now ..huh ?
Ron Paul will put the gov back where it needs to be "SMALL"
and those fears about states rights are just that.. fears..media is very good at fear tactics..in this day and age with computers and tweet etc that kind of abuse would be very hard to hide
with a constitutional government Ron Paul would never legislate by executive order..go to that Harvard debate between Liberals and conservative libertarians..see how they are working things out and how they are willing to give on some things.
for example..Paul doesn't believe in social safety nets at FED level..state is differnt..BUT..he does have an olive branch because he realizes many want the social safety nets..LOOK into his 10 % "opt" out plan..I think it would bring in MORE for safety nets ( no loop holes or write offs)
