Aging Superhero: Andreas Englund, Swedish Artist, Paints Crusader In His Twilight Years (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 10/04/11 08:48 AM ET   Updated: 12/04/11 05:12 AM ET

Ever wonder what would happen to your favorite superhero as he or she began to age, gradually becoming less lithe and more, well, enfeebled?

That's what Swedish artist Andreas Englund thought when he began his tenderly comic new series that depict a jump-suited crusader in his twilight years -- as a man who still has the power to defeat the bad guys, but might have to catch his breath afterward. Englund's series was recently displayed at Stockholm’s Lydmar Hotel this past summer.

“Humor can be the carrier of messages that are otherwise hard to convey," Englund, who is originally from the Swedish town of Falun, said of his work. "For me, it liberates my thoughts and ideas from pretentiousness while at the same time it opens doors to new routes and angles.”

You can view Englund's complete superhero series here.

Take a look at some images from the series here:

How old is Superhero middle aged dude. This guy looks like a Superhero Senior Citizen dude (no offense to my seniors) not Superhero Middle aged dude. The art work is great, very detailed and somewhat humorous.

Some people on here really need to stop being so fussy and sensitive about the age thing. This is some amazing artwork... try focusing on that.

I noticed that too. It's like, to the 20-something who wrote the story (or the layout artist who chose the photo), there's no difference between 50 and seventy. There's a whole generation's difference, Skippy. It's the equivalnet of me writing a story about toddler tantrums and using a photo of a teenager as an illustration.

So then there must be a huge difference between 70-90. At 70 one hip is out and at 90 both are out. I guess I see your point :/

The artist obviously does not actually read comics.

Many popular comic book characters are portrayed over 50 such as Professor X and
Magneto

I think the idea is to portray the younger ones as old. Its not a debate about elderly super heros. . . And Professor X and Magneto are comic book figures. Some may argue they aren't "superheros".

How is Professor X not a superhero?

My superhero is my wonderful man of 30 years. We've raised three wonderful children. He is fabulous, brave, honest, smart, kind, generous spirit and heart. He's strong and lovely, he's perfect. My breath still catches every time I see him and he makes me faint, a lot :). He makes me laugh and smile always, he really is perfect. The best thing about him is he thinks I'm perfect too (shhh, don't tell him). I really love him.
