Halloween In Alaska: A MapQuest Guide

From zombie parades and costume contests to haunted houses and hayrides (to haunted anything!), the Halloween season casts its spell and awakens our inner ghouls and goblins. As part of FrightQuest -- a MapQuest series on spooky destinations and activities -- here are three options to celebrate Halloween in Alaska that are sure to be a scream.

Gateway To Darkness

Gateway to Darkness, located in Wasilla, is one of Alaska's largest and most popular Halloween attractions. The scary fun starts in early October and runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening through Halloween. The walk-through haunted house features costumed creatures and scary tableaux accompanied by a soundtrack of shrieks, moans and groans. Although the main attraction is best suited for teens and adults, there is a child-friendly Halloween light show every Sunday afternoon for those younger than 12.

Weird And Creepy Family Halloween Bash

Every year on the Saturday before Halloween, the University of Alaska's Wood Center in Fairbanks hosts its Weird and Creepy Family Halloween Bash. The evening of seasonal fun is geared toward kids 12 and younger and their parents. Activities include pumpkin painting, a costume contest, a dino dig and face painting. Refreshments are available to purchase, and admission is free with a donation of canned food for the local food bank.

Halloween Carnival

In Juneau, Alaska's capital, the Nugget Mall gets into the Halloween spirit with a Halloween Carnival held the two weekends leading up to Halloween. Activities include trick-or-treating at the mall's stores, a costume contest, Halloween photos, a child-friendly haunted castle and a semi-scary haunted house for older children and teens. There are also Halloween-themed refreshments available and admission is free.
