Mitt Romney Attacks Rick Perry On Social Security In Florida

By TAMARA LUSH   10/04/11 09:09 PM ET  AP

THE VILLAGES, Fla. -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney warned senior citizens Tuesday to beware of turning Social Security into a "Perry scheme."

Romney took his latest swipe at one of his opponents, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, while campaigning at one of Florida's largest senior citizen communities, where many residents rely on the federal program.

In a book published last year, Perry argued that the retirement safety net violated states' rights, and he suggested that the program had problems from its inception in the 1930s. Perry says he doesn't want to change the program for older Americans, but he calls Social Security a "Ponzi scheme" because funding problems will mean younger Americans won't receive benefits they are paying for now.

Any talk of cutting Social Security benefits comes with political risk – something that Romney was acutely aware of Tuesday while talking to several hundred senior citizens at The Villages, a suburban community north of Orlando.

"I think Social Security has worked pretty darned well. I think the problem is keeping it from becoming a Perry scheme."

The former Massachusetts governor said Social Security should be preserved for future generations and any shortcomings should be solved by whoever is elected president in 2012.

"Social Security is not going to change for anyone in this room," the former Massachusetts governor reassured the audience.

The crowd of elderly retirees was enthusiastic about Romney's appearance and applauded him several times.

Area donors have also been generous to Romney; workers for The Villages were the largest source of GOP contributions from a single Florida employer, handing $67,500 to Romney.

And one of Romney's largest sources of donations came from a ZIP code in The Villages, where donors gave $73,000, according to campaign finance reports through June.

Florida Democrats were quick to criticize Romney. Three hours before his event, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Florida congresswoman and chair of the Democratic National Committee, spoke to reporters on a conference call and said Romney was in favor of "dismantling" Social Security and letting people invest retirement funds in the stock market.

"Mitt Romney would have you believe this is a government handout," Wasserman Schultz said. "Mitt Romney would rather carry water for the tea party and leave seniors to fend for themselves in the private market."

so true!

It allowed Ronald Reagan to say:

"If an individual wants to discriminate against Negroes or others in selling or renting his house, it is his right to do so"

I believe now that we are no longer 13 colonies and it's the 21st century,
the concept if 'state rights' is over and we must function as a cohesive united country.
We need uniform standards for just about everything in every state.

The most steady voting bloc for the GOP is senior citizens. Good luck for them if the GOP destroys Social Security and Medicare. I won't get them a single vote from the young but it will lose them every single vote of everybody over 55 years old. What were they thinking when they came up with this plan?

Perry and his ilk forget one thing.....most older Americans on....or who will soon be on....social security have their own kids.

The older generation of American workers and retirees wants the SS program for the younger generations.

Yet too many elite and out of touch, well off politicians do NOT get it.

It is something that often hampers the Repug politicians.
The people just do NOT want to hear SS is a ponzi scheme and so on....especially since SS has been sold to the public as a retirement insurance policy....pay when young and have some security when you can't work (retire).

Maybe we Dems should be grateful the Repug politicians do NOT get it.
It will help the Dems in 2012.

So these guys think that Social Security should be a state matter, lets see how they plan on addressing the real possibility of an individual working in a particular state, retiring there starts to collect his Social Security and then decides to move to another state. If you think the centralized operations of administering Social Security is not working, try that scenario thousands of times a year at the state level.

It makes even less sense in such a mobile society where one can be a permanent resident
of a dozen different state before they retire.
These loons just don't think,

If you bcare anything about Social Security you have to keep republicans from getting thier hands on it since they were against it when it was created and are iching to destroy it by turning the funds over to Wall Street to gamble with. Social Security has been here for 76 years and it will remain our greatest source of protection against tragedy during our working years and keep our seniors from becoming beggars when they become too old to work. Protect vit as you would our constitution because it is the one thing that will always be there in your time of need if you keep it out of republican's hands.

I don't think after every thing that has came out about Rick Perry, we Texans will have to worry
about him being our Governor in the next election.

If Romney keeps up that kind of chatter, he will win the Republican nomination. However, I also think Romney is way too liberal for the teabaggers, so they will then want to nominate their own candidate. That will effectively split the Repubteabaglican Party and give Obama an easy win in 2012.

In Texas Perry signed a law that you may NOT use your University of Texas ID to vote. But you can use your fire arm license to vote. What's up ?

The Villages in Central Florida! Where the crustiest of the crusty, sit around and wait for the grim reaper. It is one of the only locations where the Florida governor will appear in public.
