'Occupy Wall Street': How You Can Help

Help Occupy Wall Street

The New York Occupy Wall Street protests have spread far from their point of origin in Zuccotti Park.

The Lower Manhattan encampment swarming with protesters ranging from students to socialists to slackers and celebrities is amassing support across the globe.

The "Occupy" website says the most important contribution you can make to the movement is to literally "donate yourself." But the swell of physical support is putting a strain on the basic resources necessary to sustain the anti-establishment protesters.

If you can't make the trip to downtown New York and offer a resounding chant of "Hip Hooray, Make the Corporations Pay," there are still ways to help out:

Donate winter supplies:
As the temperatures plummet, protesters are asking for help to stave off cold winds. Firedoglake has organized the Occupy Supply Fund to accommodate the needs of chilly protesters by designing insulated hats, jackets, socks and blankets. Your donation will go toward winter weather gear that the company will deliver directly to the demonstrators.

Donate to Occupy Wall Street Media:
Help keep the Occupy Wall Street Journal in circulation by donating to the unofficial representation for the "people's media." Your money will go toward the regular printing of the OWSJ.

Donate money online:
The Occupy Wall Street site has a page regularly updated with requests. Donate here.

Donate money by mail:
Money orders (no cash, no checks) with "Occupy Wall Street" indicated in the memo line can be mailed to the Alliance for Global Justice:

Alliance for Global Justice
1247 "E" Street, SE
Washington, DC 20007

Donate showers and laundry:
The group continues to protest rain or shine. Sign up online to open your home to occupiers in need of a shower, shave and clean clothes.

The group accepts the follow donations of any size at their UPS Store shipping address:

The UPS Store
118A Fulton St. #205
New York, NY, 10038
C/O Occupy Wall St.

Donate groceries:
The community kitchen, which is providing meals for thousands, asks for vegan and gluten free non-perishables.

Donate food delivery:
The occupiers have set up a document with local delivery options. They request mainly vegan and vegetarian fare. See options here.

Donate books:
The on-site library, started and maintained by trained librarian Betsey Fagrin, is asking for books of any kind, to be enjoyed and shared by protesters in their downtime.

Donate medical supplies:
The makeshift hospital, manned by volunteers, is requesting "immune boosting supplements and tea," thermometers, and Epi Pens. For the protesters who ascribe to less conventional forms of medicine, "non-western" requests include raw garlic, ginger, Bavarian meat and tea tree oil.

Donate basic supplies:
The occupiers of the square have generated a twitter feed, #needsoftheoccupiers, to ask Occupy allies for help supplying more basic items ranging from Band-Aids to tampons, space blankets to tarpaulins. The group also needs clear plastic storage bins. See the full list.

"Occupy Wall Street" has yet to issue any formal demands, though it has released an official "Declaration of the Occupation of New York City" detailing the purpose of the occupation.

Similar protests are popping up across the country and abroad in Washington, D.C., Boston, China and Jerusalem.

how ironic the ad preceding the video was for citibank mortgages and what is more bazaar is they aren't lending so why advertise?? I work for a man who was left an 8 million dollar home as an inheritance. There was only $300,000 left on the mortgage. He earned $400,000.00 a year with perfect credit and he was denied the $300,000 mortgage - he never gave up the fight and finally at a higher interest he got one. If someone in that position where the bank would be lucky if they got to foreclose an 8million dollar home for a 300,000 debt which of course would never happen anyway --- how is an average person ever supposed to get a mortgage???

It sure felt good to use my B of A Visa to send support to the protesters. Sorry I can't be there. Thanks for all you're doing for our country.

I'm completely on board and plan to send in some kind of donation.... but what do you mean by "Bavarian Meat"?

Surely---surely no one is asking for meat to be flown from Seattle to NYC for a protest? Surely?
01:14 PM on 10/05/2011
Without corporations and Wall Street, the protesters would not have the smart phones, computers, website, means of accepting donations, food and supplies they are asking for, clothes on their back, shoes on their feet, the malls they were all hanging out in before they started doing this, and so on. I'm not at all against constructive change and definitely agree that capitalism needs more checks and balances, but without acknowledging the many benefits that this system has brought them these people just come off as malcontents with fuzzy, barely formed ideas assailing an obvious and easy target. I can't even find a cohesive statement of goal or intent at http://occupywallst.org, just a lot of empty rhetoric about "taking back" this or that and "reassert our sovereign control" of something or other - rallying cries with no substance. This is not the way to go.

"assailing an obvious and easy target"

The target is indeed obvious. That's what makes opposition important. Everyone knows how unfair our current welfare-for-the-rich state is. But the target is anything but easy.

Why are they on Wall Street? They need to be at the doors of the RNC and DNC and ask them why things haven't been fixed yet? The teabaggers and GOP were voted in last election and now Obama can't do anything without asking their permission. There is political stalemate so instead of camping out on Wall Street, head down to DC and ask the politicians in person to fix things! Much easier and you'll get good exercise walking down there. What's amazing to see if that the media is saying that's it's quite a small group but from the photos I have seen online there has got to be 100,000 people there at times. I guess if you're out of work it's as good a place as any to be, but come on guys, talk to the politicians, only they can help!

Talking to the politicians ceased to be a workable option some time ago. Perhaps one or two are listening. The rest are indifferent to any American voice that is not accompanied by money and power.

They need direction and I'm sure they will get it. Just not by the Repubs, multi-national corporations and plutocrats who aren't looking out for their best interest.
