Apple announced on Wednesday that company co-founder and tech visionary Steve Jobs had passed away at the age of 56.

Mere hours after his death, memorials began popping up at Apple stores from New York to Sydney commemorating the man whose innovations affected global trends in consumer technology.

Some have called Jobs the father of digital music, while others see him as a figure who has left a lasting impression of society. On Wednesday, tech journalist Walt Mossberg called Jobs "a historical figure on the scale of a Thomas Edison or a Henry Ford."

To see how Apple fans are honoring and thanking Steve Jobs, take a look a the slideshow (below) of photos taken during memorial services held around the world.

Some of the tribute photos are creative. Others are random. Although I live in NYC, I would like to see the tributes of others worldwide.

Steve Jobs made being a geek kind of sexy; who would have thunk it?

There is life after death our spirits don't die with the body so Steve is experiencing yet another adventure. We will all have similar experiences, eventually.

I don’t believe our spirits necessarily rest, nevertheless, as the saying goes, may Steve Jobs rest in peace.

Interesting that younger people see him as "the father of digital music". -- from an Apple2+ purchaser.

p.s. we installed an alligator clip so we could use capitals!

This is either an unfunny joke, or classless.

Steve was a unique and very compassionate friend, mentor and colleague. The man who really lived by the phrase thinking out of the box.
You will always be remembered by me as a man with compassion, understanding, and most of all as a mensch
Thanks for the contribution made to my life and the visions that you shared with me.
I will always remember the day of your passing as I remember the day I met you in 1984.
The friendship that grew from this encounter will be one of the most compelling memories of my life.
I will miss you and our regular long distance calls.
