New Jersey Man Drowns After Jumping In Lake Michigan, Allegedly To Avoid Police

Police say a New Jersey man drowned in Lake Michigan Wednesday night after jumping in the water when officers approached him.

Amit A. Patel, 31, was approached by police trying to clear loiterers from Olive Park at 8:11 p.m. Wednesday, police News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien told the Chicago Tribune. When officers asked his name, they say Patel jumped into the 60-degree waters of Lake Michigan.

Emergency crews found Patel about 45 minutes later near Olive Park Beach on the Near North Side, Fire Media Affairs told the Chicago Sun-Times. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in "extremely critical" condition.

He died at 9:30 p.m., according to NBC.

An autopsy is scheduled Thursday to determine the cause of death, the Sun-Times reports. Belmont area detectives are investigating.
