Colleges For Visionaries

It can be something as seemingly insignificant as an art class that inspires the greatest minds of our time to create and innovate. In his famous speech to the Stanford class of 2005, Steve Jobs, who attended Reed College for several months, noted that a calligraphy class he took there inspired the design of his Apple products. If he hadn't taken that class, he said, "the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts."

Jobs, who infamously never graduated from college, proves in his legacy that one needn't pursue a traditional path to change the world. But there are colleges in America that encourage young minds to flourish in unique ways. See nine of them below -- and tell us why your college is suited for visionaries in the comments section.

The alma mater of Gus Van Sant, Seth MacFarlane and Nicole Miller, and the birthplace of the Talking Heads, this Providence, R.I. school has long attracted the artistically minded. Founded in 1877, the school was chartered to give students a basis in the arts, from interior design to glass working to textiles and film.

No one wants to talk about the obvious: most colleges are just a business, nothing more. The CEOs (called college presidents) make a bundle while the faculty searches for shards. But there are a few colleges where the idea of an education in not linked with the idea of a job, but something of greater significance. The corporate world is doing its best to destroy these, because they know what would happen if they're not. But there is one other factor: students. Most of the fools in college are there to have fun and to not work. The evidence is clear. Now this is okay so long as no taxpayer money is being tossed at these mental cripples. And in the end, college or not, true Visionaries rise to the surface - but most remain forever poor in material wealth. College is only one possible road, not insurance of a better life. The USA has not slightest idea of the meaning of education. Most US colleges are just trade schools, nothing more.

What about Harvard? I'm told there have been some great visionaries out of that school, such as the Winklevoss twins.
