ActiveEmptyNesters.com, Social Networking Site For Boomers, Offers Discounts And Online Clubs

Facebook Meets Groupon...For Boomers?

For those of you who have been resisting Facebook and Twitter, a new social network catering exclusively to the interests of the over-50 set has emerged.

ActiveEmptyNesters.com offers the chance to find old high school classmates, ask questions about their kids and grandkids, and build their own online clubs. Groups can meet for bowling, coffee, class reunions and book club, as well as group cruises and hiking tours.

As The Sacremento Bee is reporting:

"I recently discovered that my high school class was having difficulty in locating classmates,” said Ronald Mercier, creator of the ActiveEmptyNesters.com website. “Creating a group on ActiveEmptyNesters.com will help them communicate with every member using just a simple post announcing the event."

It's clear that ActiveEmptyNesters.com, which launched in April, is very much still in its early stages of development. Currently, there are a mere 707 listed members, compared to the 750 million+ users actively on Facebook.

Whether or not the site can ever rival Facebook or even make a Meetup.com-style splash remains to be seen, but there are a handful of unique offerings. Members can access the “Activity Marketplace” which features deals on products and services for boomers. The site is also teaming up with BuyWithMe.com to offer discounts on everything from fitness classes and salon services to golf games and winery tours. As AARP put it, “it’s a Facebook-meets-Groupon social network for the over-50 set.”

If you're on the (7-year-old) classic, remember to head over to Facebook and like HuffPost50!
