'Michael Forever,' Michael Jackson Tribute Concert, In Wales Saturday

By JILL LAWLESS   10/ 9/11 12:47 AM ET   AP

CARDIFF, Wales -- Chart-toppers, soul singers and three generations of Michael Jackson's family – including his children – celebrated the King of Pop at an energetic tribute concert Saturday, urging fans to focus on the late star's music rather than his death.

The run-up to the "Michael Forever" concert was overshadowed by the Los Angeles manslaughter trial of Jackson's doctor, and marred by fan criticism, sluggish ticket sales and dissension within the Jackson family. But once the four-hour show started, Jackson's musical genius, and the warm tributes of friends and family, carried the night.

"We're very happy to be here on this special night to honor our father," said Jackson's 13-year-old daughter Paris, who made a brief onstage appearance alongside brothers Prince, 14, and 9-year-old Michael Joseph Jr., known as Blanket.

The children wore outfits evoking their father's famous styles – Paris most strikingly, in a red and black "Thriller"-style jacket. Blanket stood stoic and shy, but the older children smiled and appeared confident in the spotlight.

On a stage shaped like a giant glove, musicians including Christina Aguilera, Gladys Knight and Cee Lo Green performed songs from across Jackson's career – from his childhood with the Jackson 5 through monster solo albums like "Thriller" and "Bad."

The Black Eyed Peas, probably the biggest act on the bill, pulled out of the lineup this week, citing "unavoidable circumstances."

Participants urged fans to ignore the criticism and controversy, and to revel in the celebration of Jackson's musical legacy.

"It's not about the controversy," said R&B star Ne-Yo, who kicked off the show with a rendition of "Billie Jean," complete with some passable moonwalking. "It's not about the trial. It's not about his death. It's about celebrating his life. It's about celebrating his music."

The 50,000-strong crowd at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium did just that, roaring with approval as Jackson's brothers Marlon, Tito and Jackie – three-fifths of the original Jackson 5 – took the stage to perform "Blame It On the Boogie" with British boyband JLS.

"Can you feel his spirit in the house tonight?" asked Marlon. Judging by the cheers, the fedora hats and the sequined gloves in the audience, many could.

Jackson died in June 2009, at age 50, as he was preparing for a string of comeback concerts in London.

His last hours are being relived in graphic detail at the manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, accused of giving Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol and other sedatives in the bedroom of his rented mansion on June 25, 2009.

"This is a great counter-act to that," said Motown great Smokey Robinson, who gave a soulful rendition of "She's Out of My Life." "And it gives people something happy to do, rather than thinking about what's going on in the trial."

The show mined a rich trove of Jackson hits. Leona Lewis crooned "I'll Be There," Beyonce delivered the early single "I Wanna Be Where You Are" and Jamie Foxx performed "Rock With You." Aguilera sang Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" – one of Jackson's favorite songs.

"Tonight is a history lesson," Foxx told the crowd. "We're going to cover five decades of greatness."

The show reached a climax with Knight performing the poignant "Gone Too Soon" before a rousing finale that brought most of the performers – and the Jackson children – back onstage for the exuberant "Don't Stop Til' You Get Enough."

The concert has divided the King of Pop's family and followers. The three brothers, sister La Toya and vocal group 3T – composed of three of Michael's nephews – all performed, while 81-year-old matriarch Katherine was in the audience.

But Michael's brothers Jermaine and Randy and sister Janet have stayed away, saying it is wrong to hold the show at the same time as Murray's trial.

Before the show, Marlon Jackson said he respected his siblings' decision, but said he was sure Michael would have approved.

"Each one of us grieves differently," he said. "We want to celebrate the positive side of his life, the positive things that he did."

Some fan groups around also criticized the show for ticket prices that started at about $100 and for what some regard as an out-of-the-way location in Cardiff, 150 miles (240 kilometers) west of London.

"I believe it should wait, not only because of the Murray trial," said Wesley Noorhoff, president of a Dutch Michael Jackson fan club. "If you do a tribute to Michael, it has to be the best there is, just like Michael."

But those who came to Cardiff said it was a fitting antidote to the grim courtroom spectacle in Los Angeles.

"There's a lot of negativity in that courtroom," said Ronnie Lee, a 32-year-old truck driver from Pembroke, Wales, sporting a "Thriller" T-shirt. "This is a chance to say, 'Thank you Michael' and celebrate the music."

As the crowd poured out of the stadium, opinion was divided.

"Rubbish," said Sophie Stockdale, 23. "If you wanted to watch Beyonce on video link, you could do it on YouTube."

But Sophie Morris, also 23, said she'd loved it.

"It was amazing," she said. "I actually cried three or four times."

I think in the end, the Jackson's are going to be sorry that they didn't allow the prosecution plead out this case against Dr. Murray. Sometime cases depending on the charges, the DA and prosecution will offer a plea bargain but it wasn't done in this case. The Jackson's were upset that First or Second Degree Murder wasn't charged. They would have rather embarrassed Michael and his children just to get a little more attention.... this is going to back fire big...IMO
To show pictures of Michael like they did today instead of just giving copies to the jury was the lowest and the family could have asked for this to be done... IMO

I'd sure like to know who paid for the advertising that was flying over the court house today. I would think the Judge would be livid to see such an action when the jurors could have seen it while on break or lunch. This just gives the defense grounds for a mistrial ...IMO
"Justice for Michael from Hong Kong"... I hear the Jackson Compound is planning another moneygrabber for Tokyo in December....

Dr. Murray didn't have the intent to kill Michael, everyone already know that. He was guilty for administering Propofol outside a hospital setting and having medications sent to a private resident. The main factor was he left him alone while be giving medications. He's guilty of that for sure but they should have pleaded out this case. This was only a Involuntary Manslaughter case.
The prosecution let the door open today for the defense to kick it down... IMO The Jackson's and the prosecution didn't want Dr. Kline brought into this case but the tapes played in court list him as the doctor giving him Demerol just days before his death. I hope they bring his butt into court because he's got answers to a lot of questions that really need to be answered.
IMO... theirs a reason the Jackson's don't want him involved in this case.... Think about why they wouldn't...??? Interesting

If Michael were here this would never happen with his children. These children are being exploited by the Jackson's and it will never end until either the Estate attorneys or the children become of age and realize that they were only used to make Money for the Jackson's.
A Guardian ad Litem should be appointed to protect the rights of the children. I bet Prince, Paris and Blanket know nothing about the Jackson's being restricted from using Micheal's name, material and likeness. That why they've taken this concerts outside the country to find the loopholes in the Estate's contacts that Michael wanted enforced.
As far as I'm concerned... this has been nothing but a Show for the Jacksons including the funeral. If they respected Michael, a private funeral would have been proper for the family and let he fan's pay their respects like they did with Steve Job's. Instead they elected to put on a Performance and make the City of Los Angeles tax payers pay the bill.

The trial is nothing but more publicity IMO... Their were ways around this that would have been less damaging to his children and still held Dr. Murray responsible for Michael's passing.
The drama today is just a small sample of what's to come and I just can't wait until the defense starts presenting it's case.

Enough is enough!! Let this man rest in peace and and let his children be be able to find their own voices and not to be told what to say by others. Good luck children....

Those children are beautiful, but has anyone noticed that Blanket always appears sad and never smiles? I hope he is receiving proper grief counseling. I'm sure he's still missing his dad. poor baby. My heart aches for him.

Sad isn't it? Just don't thibk Michael would have approved of his children being paraded around. Kinda creeps me out that the children were wearing some of Michaels clothes,....Katherine (the grandmother) just struck me as the type who would 'had not' permitted this. Sure smells of Joe, Latoya, and Jermaine Jackson. Here's a novelty,....let Michael Jackson rest in peace.

Katherine is their Guardian and she shouldn't have let it happen.... Michael would have been livid. This family is only about the money and they are trying to make as much as they possibly can before the children become of age or something happens to Katherine. Then the children will realize their the one's in control instead of being used like puppets.

it's just too soon for this. and with the trial going on? it's just too soon.

in time no one will begrudge the executors of Jackson's estate from profiting from his image and likeness, just as no one holds it against Lisa Marie or any other famous persons heirs. but this thing just wasn't a very classy move.

I used to watch Michael Jackson as a kid , as he is a few years older than I , I could not stop watching him until he stopped performing , he was an eye and ear magnet ,and I was the Iron drawn to that magnet. . I never believed he molested any one , yes he was eccentric , eclectic , and down right the most talented musical performer there ever was or ever will be. tell me when you watch him , "can't stop till you get enough"..............rest in peace Mike .
04:07 PM on 10/11/2011
Thank you for saying that, because it's true. Michael Jackson NEVER molested anyone. He was different and because of this, he was a special target for grifters, schemers, and false accusers. Con-artists felt that because of Michael's eccentricities, the world would believe their false accusations against him and reward them a boat--load of money. I am glad MJ fought back during that last farce of a trial. I only wish he had not settled during those first claims against him. He followed the advice of his attorneys by paying a settlement during those first claims just to get the matter out of the way. That was bad legal advice.

Cheers. FBI tailed him for years and found nothing

So why did he have to give to kids "jesus juice"?
12:13 AM on 10/24/2011
Not certain about that. I"m familiar however, with a survey that was done some time ago. Revealed next to Jesus, Michael Jackson most recognizable entity on planet. As widely known as ignorance. Much more respected however. More loved too.

The celebration is for a dead drug addict and pedophile.
I wish the Jacksons would leave those kids alone so they can have a normal life.

I hate that his siblings are trying to make money off of Micheals death and his children...MJ was a very private person and I do not believe he would would happy about they family using his kids and keeping them in the public I soooo much...for crying out loud, he kept them covered the majority of their lives and now they are out there...the family should be assamed!!
11:47 AM on 10/11/2011
GET USED TO IT! MJ is now a family business that MUST go on. The order of the day is to clean up MJ's controvertial past by convicting the doctor. Then they will proceed with revivals such as this (which focus on the "positive") forever and ever. Using MJ's kids is superimportant in the scheme because they are good looking and at charming ages. Never mind none of them look like any of the Jacksons.... They are legally MJ's kids and seem to enjoy the roles that destiny has granted them. I say let all the fans spend the cash and enjoy themselves.

Blanket looks just like Michael at that age with the exception of hair texture and skin color....there are side by side comparisons all over the internet anyone who is truthful knows the resemblence is striking and familiar...

"these kids will never be recognized as his children" by whom? you? wow that is sad... I think being a dad is one of the thinks that he did right.
12:51 PM on 10/11/2011
I think your point (that he is most likely not the biological father of these children) could have been made without insulting him as a real father. Biology is not the end all and be all of fatherhood. These are his legal children, he loved them, they knew no other father and never wanted for a father -- he is their father. Stop being so heartless and disrespectful of the love in a family.
