'Feminist Ryan Gosling' Blog Gains Popularity Using 'Hey Girl' Meme

First Posted: 10/10/11 07:59 PM ET Updated: 12/10/11 05:12 AM ET

Ryan Gosling images and feminism quotes collide in this funny, clever blog that nods to women's rights using the actor's infamous "Hey Girl" meme.

The "Feminist Ryan Gosling" Tumblr blog, which was created Friday, features "feminist theory flashcards from your favorite sensitive movie dude-turned-meme."

The out-of-context images are paired with quotes of feminist theory, praise for female icons, one-liners about gender, and more. (Screen shot below.)

The blog's author points out that he or she has "no idea if Ryan Gosling is actually a feminist," but the actor, arguably most famous for his role in The Notebook, has made some feminist remarks in the past.

Gosling received praise in a November 2010 Ms. Magazine blog post for his forward-thinking attitude about how women are depicted on the big screen.

"Blue Valentine," a 2010 film about a couple's rocky relationship path, starring Gosling and Michelle Williams, was set to receive an NC-17 rating because of a scene depicting Gosling's character giving oral sex to Williams'. Gosling called the MPAA sexist for assigning the rating, given how many films showing men receiving oral sex from women are only rated R.

He stated:

The MPAA is okay supporting scenes that portray women in scenarios of sexual torture and violence for entertainment purposes, but they are trying to force us to look away from a scene that shows a woman in a sexual scenario, which is both complicit and complex. It’s misogynistic in nature to try and control a woman’s sexual presentation of self. I consider this an issue that is bigger than this film.”

The MPAA's decision was later reversed, and the movie was given an R rating.

In an interview with MTV, Gosling said he was aware of the "Hey Girl" meme that became popular through blog "F*** Yeah! Ryan Gosling," and he even read some selections for the camera:

Hey girl,

You know that if it would make it easier for you to view the site on your computer when you get home at night I'll queue it up for you while I'm making us dinner and drawing your warm bath.

Love the "Feminist Ryan Gosling" Tumblr...It's such a great juxtaposition of feminist ideas with basically amounts to objectification of an adorable actor (Gosling.) Ironic, funny, and clever. Still, it is interesting that it has become more and more acceptable for women to objectify men. I wrote a bit about this phenomenon: http://www.elephantjournal.com/2011/10/ryan-gosling-wants-to-cuddle-and-read-me-julia-kristeva/

Recently saw Drive and Ides of March and I he's an absolute wooden bore in both. He can't emote and depends on long pauses and stares and heavy handed soundtracks to get across what he's feeling. A very weak and shallow actor he's a good looking Tim Roth look alike without the accent or the energy.

Some people (especially younger men) don't understand, or misread, facial expressions.  They need things to be very literal.  RG can express a lot just in his brow.  Add in his eyes, his jaw, his posture -- it's all there.

A passionless bore with good bone structure. I suggest you study truly great actors more nuanced in the craft of film acting like Danny Lewis and Seymour Hoffman.

I guess that feminist nonsense sound misguided no matter who it comes from; especially men.

I never really got it until I saw him in Crazy, Stupid Love, but I think he deserves all the press. He is quite charming.

He's charming for sure. But he's also a terrific actor. Have you seen any of his other movies?

I must admit that I get a little angry at the Ryan Gosling bandwagon. I have adored this man for over 10 years from the moment I saw him in "The Believer." I even loved him in "Remember the Titans" and that weird thriller movie with his ex-Sandra. Something about him just clicked......a charismatic sexiness. "Half Nelson" and "Lars" were phenomenal. And no, I have never ever seen the "Notebook" because I would rather not ruin my sexy image of him through his work.

So, to be petty, I loved him FIRST!

Well, you're smart.  (Though I knew that already. :)  I have to say, I never saw him in anything until recently.  It's not that I ignored him or anything -- I can't see how I would have given how amazing he is -- but from 1997 (when my older son was born) most of TV and movies just fell off my list.  I used to see a lot of movies, and am starting up more again now, but missed most during the last 14 years!

You are too cute! I actually feel a bit of a cradle robber too since I am older than Gosling (but younger than Sandra his ex) and he was young when I first started my little Gosling affair. In my own mind of course!

You should see "Lars and the Real Girl" for just great acting and complete adorableness. The Believer is amazing. He pulls off a range in it that is unique to his age.
