Occupy Wall Street Rages On Around The World

Occupy Wall Street

AP/The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/10/11 01:38 AM ET Updated: 12/09/11 05:12 AM ET

Occupy Wall Street, a movement that began as a small band of protesters in Zuccotti Park, gained endorsements from major unions and progressive leaders as well as prominent politicians.

Within a few short weeks, it has come to resemble a movement with more than 900 meetups in 900 cities across the country. It has even gone international with Occupy sites in Australia and London and other cities saddled with long unemployment lines, gross income disparities, and hapless politicians.

Organizers have erected tent cities in town squares and held rallies in front of city halls. Major marches have been held in Las Vegas and Portland, and there have been strong showings in Chicago and Austin, and plenty of free vegan food served by Occupy Baltimore.

It's unclear just where all these general assemby meetings, Twitter updates, and teach-ins are heading. Democratic leaders including Vice President Joe Biden and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi expressed support for the protesters this week and officials such as U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke have said they sympathize with the protestors' feelings of anger towards big banks' role in the financial crisis.

Naomi Klein, Michael Moore, Tahrir Square veterans, and notable environmentalists have all made cameo appearances. Organized labor has also backed the protests.

The support has not helped relations with the police. The activists have endured pepper spray, a baton-wielding white-shirt and the mass arrest of more than 700 demonstrators on the Brooklyn Bridge. That incident is now the subject of a class-action lawsuit filed in federal court. These incidents will either come to define the movement or be simply blips onto something more substantial and lasting.

The protesters list of grievances is long, with issues ranging from the foreclosure crisis and work-place discrimination to student loan debt. The protests in New York and other cities focus on income inequality, a theme common in the group's internet presence, including on a Tumblr that showcases Americans dealing with joblessness and other issues.
Even if the protesters were able to narrow their concerns to one, easily defined goal, some organizers say that would miss the point. So what comes next?

All these OWS protesters are complaining about capitalism. How many will give up their iphones, ipads, computers ? How many will give up their jobs ? How many will give up their monthly bailout money from the government in the form of SSI, food stamps, health programs, and any other entitlement program. Oh yes, if any of them are living with their parents, figure out how to take care of yourself and pay your bills without mooching off their hard work and years of saving.

Oh yes, and give up your right to any preferential treatment because you choose to have sex with a member of the same sex that you are, or that you are choosing to reassign yourself sexually.

Are you standing for the right for this woman in Los Angeles that wanted all the Zionist Jews run out of the country, or are you outraged by the racist comments made by her ? Would you call for the same penalties for this woman as someone who made a comment about blacks or hispanics or gays ?

How could one start a counter movement such as protesting the taxpayer money that is being spent on "multi-lingual" education, health care for illegal immigrants, education and health care for the children of people who break the law, monthly support checks for these people. Oh yes. how about protesting the great treatment that prisoners get while in jail. Free health care, free education, great meals. Oh yes, and then there are those that birth more children so that they can get more money each month from the taxpayer. Anyone interested in a counter-movement ?

“There’s a lot of stuff we wouldn’t have to clean up if the city provided basic human rights, like a Port-A-Potty,” said demonstrator Gene Wagner. “If you would’ve given us a Port-A-Potty 30 days ago, we would’ve maintained it ourselves.”

- A quote gathered from CBS New York

Now a Port-a-Potty is a basic human right to these people? Unreal.

No, fool, the protestors would have paid for it themselves. The city wouldn't let them put one in.

There's a big difference.

And you just outed yourself as a hater.

Calling attention to the absurdity of OWS protesters' demands is hardly hateful. Yet you're the one doing the name-calling... so, I'll leave it at that.

The protesters didn't want to purchase sleeping bags because it meant supporting capitalism, yet they'll pay to have port-a-poties put in? Doubtful. The individual that CBS quoted clearly expressed that sanitation services are a "basic human right." It hardly surprises me. These people want everything for free... doesn't matter how it gets paid for.

the demonstrator have demonstrated that in America you can exist squatting on someone else's land....they are all eating, they are all getting water........so how did we go from that to needing to put everyone in america in their own dwelling, even at someone else's expense. go ows, you are proving that we need less social programs.

The protesters are protesting the wrong people.........The Banks, and so called "Rich Cats on Wall Street" did what they were told to do by the Fed............Thank Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and the rest of Washingrton DC for this mess.

The huge government investment in subprime mortgages achieved its purpose. Home ownership in the U.S. increased to 69% from 65% (where it had been for 30 years). But it also led to the biggest housing bubble in American history. This bubble, which lasted from 1997 to 2007, also created a huge private market for mortgage-backed securities (MBS) based on pools of subprime loans.

This entire protest is a joke. The pundits in Europe are concerned and furious at our Fed, FREDDY and FANNY. . . the financial crisis is a lot deeper and a lot worse than you know...
it was created by the Gov't not Wall Street.

Big Labor, Marxists, Communists and George Soros' army of community organizers have been behind the anti-capitalism protests/riots on Wall Street from the beginning. The number of arrests and acts of vandalism has skyrocketed while the White House and Democrats are eagerly supporting these protests. This should come as no surprise to anyone, as this is a well-orchestrated political strategy to take everyone's attention away from the bad economy and all the scandals now being investigated by the House.

The big rally in New York yesterday was supported by the 70,000 member New York chapter of SEIU and the ACORN splinter group NY Communities for Change. Ironically this mob marched through the streets of Manhattan to the homes of "evil billionaires" all the while being financed and directed by the currency manipulating, anti-American billionaire GEORGE SOROS.

In fact the first protests were initiated by the AdBusters Media Foundation an anti-free market, "anti-consumerists" group heavily financed by Soros.

well this is a very interesting development. Getting kicked out of the Park Friday. Ya know T-partiers left their places of protest cleaner then when they found it. This tells you so much about the protesters..They have no regard to their own sanitation, let alone the sanitation of a public area. VERY INTERESTING. The jails will be full Friday night.

And they are the Environmentally Aware Left...................LMAO with you.
They are just phoney professional protesters who "sit in" on anything that is politically correct at the time. Their agenda is no agenda. They don't work, and are animals. Won't be the first time those people saw the inside of a jail.

there is nothing wrong with capitalism. there is everything wrong with buddy capitalism... when a political donor can visit the white house 14 times to press for bailout mone for solyndra to protect his investment. when a big recipient of government funds like immelt of ge can have the ear of the president. when wall street firms like goldman sachs can buy theirvway into the halls of power with huge donations to chuckie schummer.. when chris dodd can get preferential mortgage treatments as a friend of country wide mortgage... then there is a lot wrong with capitalism. cynic that i m i think the samme indictment could be brought against any governmental system from feudalism to ,communism ,, from socialism to facism,,

buddy capitalism exists, but never to the extend as we are seeing now.....this administration has taken it up 100% beyond the normal score.....
how does a little country like israel with no natural resources and little money manage to do so
much for their people because their politicans steal very little...there always will be some that steal but it's to what degree.
this administration is outrageous.

The CEO of Citibank has come out in favor of Occupy Wall Street.

Sorry, tea-baggers. Your corporate overlords are abandoning you.

It is just good business to side with 99% of their customers.

But never fear, I am sure the plus-sized clothing shops will still support their biggest customers, the baggers.

Those who cannot relate or empathize with our fellow Americans who are standing up for those unable to make ends meet or unemployed, they represent 99% of us who are not millionaires.

But the posters here, who have this divisive, negative view of what they are doing collectively, are the very same 1% who are angry and cannot relate to their plight.
We need to pay attention to the 1% here. (They expose themselves all the time.)
But It's real simple. If you have more than enough to take care of your family, then why is wrong for other Americans to want to do the same and can't?

If you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem...no flip flopping.
10:12 AM on 10/19/2011
When someone works and takes care of their family, they have the right to spend that money as they please. Would you be willing to give up 1/2 of what you make to take care of someone else ?

No...But isn't that what we middle class do anyway? Are they asking for you to give up 1/2? That part is where I'm confused.
