First Posted: 10/10/11 09:17 AM ET   Updated: 12/10/11 05:12 AM ET

It's no secret that the cost of certain colleges in America can empty the bank accounts of parents and students -- and worse. For the fifth year in a row, our friends at Campus Grotto calculated which colleges boast the highest total price tags in the country -- some nearing a whopping $60,000 per year.

This year, 19 colleges made their list. See the top 10 most expensive colleges below, and click over to Campus Grotto for the full list and their methodology.

The cost of education has not risen as fast as the cost of baby sitting today's kids through 4 years of their formative years.

Is the level of professors any good at those colleges? Is it worth entering such an expensive college at all?

Just think, in some of those terrible "socialist" colleges in Europe, there is little or no cost to attend, and no back-breaking student loans to repay.

But here in America, that would be raw meat to the right.

What makes these colleges so special that they need so much money?

I agree with CAPTK - it's important to realize that sticker price doesn't have to be (and in many cases isn't) the actual tuition you end up paying. Students must take advantage of every single free $ they can get!

How can I have lived so long and never, ever, heard of the great and expensive Eugene Lang University?

Had the same thought. Most of these I've never heard of.

Cost of living is higher in NYC & LA, but tons of money is wasted at these places on things that are totally superficial. Case in point: our son at NYU says rows of treadmills w/screens were yanked out of the glitzy gym last year & replaced with brand new treadmills, each w/its own TV screen. This type of thing goes on throughout college facilities. Presumably, spoiled prospective students require such amenities, and colleges are all too willing to oblige. It's decadent.

Hence, the answer to my question: What makes these colleges so special that they need so much money?

The numbers are a bit misleading as it is the raw bill before offsets from financial aid kicks in. Columbia, for one, comes WAY down in price for most students and low-income students are basically free (probably why these schools aren't being Occupied for the peanut gallery...)

These places should be #occupied

Though your comment is pretty funny, this isn't W/St, where oligarchs run the government. These are private institutions for which individuals pay these grossly inflated tuition. A fool and his/her money, and all that.

well the signs out there are these mobs complaining about being so deep in debt and they don't think they should have to pay off their student loans.

For what reason?
No one is making them go to one of these expensive schools.
Ridiculous post.

Some them are blaming others for their student loans. read the signs they carry.

Example: "I have a $60,000 in school loans, where is my bailout!"

haha

That's not even taken into account to the cost of books, transportation, living allowances, etc..
