Theologian Ted Peters Says Religious Believers 'Ready To Share A Pew With Aliens'

Extra Terrestrial Contact

First Posted: 10/10/11 01:01 PM ET Updated: 10/10/11 06:50 PM ET

If it turns out that Earthlings aren't alone in the universe and contact is eventually made between us and an extraterrestrial race, would we actually accept them as new-found friends and galactic neighbors?

That question has been raised many times in the past couple of years by a variety of individuals in and out of religious circles.

It was among the myriad topics discussed at the recent 100 Year Starship Symposium in Orlando, Fla.

Sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the event considered issues dealing with future plans for humans to travel to faraway star systems.

Among the subjects discussed were the philosophical and religious considerations about humans going into deep space and finding hospitable worlds and life elsewhere.

Exactly how would the religious community react to the possibility of real, honest-to-goodness aliens in our midst?

"It depends on what you mean by 'religious community,' said Ted Peters, a professor of systematic theology at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Calif.

"If you're talking about theologians, they do, from time to time, address the matter of other worlds with intelligent beings as part of God's creation. And, believe it or not, this has been going on for 800 years," Peters (pictured at left) told The Huffington Post.

In a 2008 interview, astronomer and Vatican observatory director Jose Gabriel Funes said the Church wouldn't have a problem with the idea of intelligent life elsewhere in the cosmos.

"Astronomers believe that the universe is made up of 100 billion galaxies, each of which consists of 100 billion stars. Many of these -- or almost all -- could have planets," Funes said. "How can you exclude that life has developed elsewhere?"

"As there is a multiplicity of creatures on Earth, so there could be other beings, even intelligent, created by God," he added. "This does not contradict our faith because we cannot put limits on God's creative freedom.

"If we consider earthly creatures as 'brother' and 'sister,' why could we not also speak of an 'extraterrestrial brother'?"

Peters, author of the book "UFOs: God's Chariots?," agrees with Funes.

"I know a number of Jesuits who work at the Vatican observatory and they see themselves as serious scientists who are trying to answer the extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) question," said Peters. "Theologically, they believe that God's creation is immense and that other intelligent beings would be creatures of God."

WATCH THIS 2009 NEWS REPORT ON THE VATICAN E.T. CONFERENCE:

In order to address the question of whether or not Earth's religions would collapse in the wake of contact with an alien civilization, Peters created the Peters ETI Religious Crisis Survey that suggested "religious believers are much more ready to share a pew with an alien than we might expect."

"I had wanted to do this for several decades because common sense seemed to indicate that religious people are fragile and would be shocked with the news of contact with extraterrestrial intelligence, causing their faith to crumble," Peters explained. "Intuitively, I thought there was something wrong with this."

According to Peters' survey, people of many religions uniformly said that an extraterrestrial reality wouldn't hurt their faith.

"The second startling piece of information was that those people who really fear that religious traditions are going to be undercut are those who are non-religious," he noted.

Last year, a Vatican astronomer, Guy Consolmagno, speculated that if aliens exist, they might have souls and he offered to reach out, touch and baptize them.

Peters hopes any E.T. visitors to Earth will result in them slapping us on the hands.

He said, "Frankly, my desire and wish would be that they'd be just like [alien emissary] Klaatu in [the classic science fiction movie] 'The Day the Earth Stood Still,' (pictured at right) coming here to give us a firm warning, like the prophets of the Old Testament did: 'You're in deep trouble and it's going to get worse unless you shape up!'"

The only "sharing of the pew" will be the extraterrestrials sitting down to observe the ridiculously stagnant and oppressive view of reality humanity has put before itself. The only absolute truth is that there is none, your consciousness manifests its own reality. And "aliens" may not just be from other planets, they may be extra-dimensional, from a different time line or ultraterrestrial (inner earth).

One thing is for certain, disclosure needs to happen. No matter what consequence it has on humanity. Disclosure still needs to happen, our human institutions need to crumble, it is the only way to evolve. And if the govt. wont do it, the private citizenry must force them to.

Since it can be said that all matter at some point "pops" in and out of existence, it conjures an idea that nothing is as real as we'd like it to be. No living person or dead on this rock can or could have protested that we may be looking out into a sealed prism. We could very well be in a sort of, snow globe. The "impossible" "nearly infinite" space is simply an observable wall. Terms like "300 Million Light Years Away" to represent the closest, most likely habitable planet to our knowledge is a literal translation of, "Idiots, you're not going anywhere” Follow The Word; follow what is most likely the reality. The most likely reality being, we were designed, we can't comprehend how and that's ok. Reality is,implementation of faith. Faith by definition is the requirement and the atheists by demanding proof through mechanical means can't, by definition, ever achieve faith. The Aliens are our active minds; reaching...reaching for answers and more importantly, to create more questions...questions which ultimately are distractions...distractions which harm the design of faith.

on the matter of "intelligent design", if science has found that all things in the universe can be explained through mathmatics, that to me anyway suggests that the universe was "designed" but something "intelligent". also, by definition "god" is a being "not of this earth" any being not of this earth is also by definition "extraterrestrial". Heaven and Hell are noted as being different planes of existence to our own. which is the scary part because that suggests to me that they are different dimensions, and whoever is in those dimensions have found a way to cross over to our plane and screw with us. so to the atheist out there i can say that heaven, hell, god, and angels DO EXIST. we just misinterpereted what they were. our ancestors were not stupid when they wrote on walls and made the religious texts. they just put down what they saw, and understood at the time. however what happens after death well, i dont know. only the dead do.

Well remember the movie called when the earth stood still. The alien cameout to give us the worlds answer and the first thing that happen was us to shoot at us. At that point we lost all the answers to our problems. Only in America.

This was fun, folks, but I'm going to go look at the news of the truly weird -- "Politics".

How do we know that we already aren't sharing a pew with aliens?

The comic strip Calvin and Hobbes said something to the effect that the most convincing evidence that there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe is that they havent contacted us.

Thanks for reminding me about that quote. I miss old Calvin and Hobbes...

I am reminded of a live news segment back when America prepared to launch the first landing on the moon. A repubable NBC newsman was interviewing Werner Von Braun - the brillian defector scientest who had contributed significantly to our success in rocket propulsion, and unknown to most viewers, a serious theologian. He asked if we expected to find "life" on the moon. Von Braun said possibly micro-organisms, but we already knew not to expect life forms such as us. The Vanocer (Sp) asked if we should expect to find life in the universe. Von Braun explained the mass of "universe" and said it was mathematically arrogant to think we would be the only life form is such an expanse. Vanocer said "But wouldn't the discover of alien life forms challenge our views of creation and God?" Without a blink Von Braun simply said "I don't know many of our views of God that couldn't stand to be challenged." Shocking!! Brilliant!! Let us hope we are capable of learning MORE about our creator. Maybe learning about our siblings will help us start relating to one another better, as the creator intended. I've always said what American politics needs -- especially in our polarized present state -- is an alien invasion. Watch us all huddle together then!!

it's so true as well, if the earth has achieved life such as us in (im porposly rounding up so stay with me) 5 billion years, and from what we know at least as of now, the universe is 15 billion years old, then at the VERY VERY LEAST there should be planets all over the universe with intelligent life. just the math suggests a theory that every 5 billions years a species has acheived sentient status. but as i stated in an earlier comment, our ancestors were not stupid. they wrote down what they saw and to the best of thier known ability. primitive people even today pray to "sky gods" if you take the religious texts and refer modern terms to them it paints an entirely different picture. perhaps we are the ETs and we are just finding this out. perhaps it's not an invasion, but a preperation for our future. perhaps startrek is not far off? though it would appear they dont have a prime directive. LOL

Don't worry. It won't be long before all things shall be made known. I always ask the perpetual question, "where did that come from?" "OK then, where did that come from?" "OK then, where did that come from?", and on and on and on until finally, I get an, "I don't know." Then I say, "exactly, you don't know, and therefore you have no proof as to the origin of energy and matter." For me it is more conceivable to invision creation from God who has always existed. Eternity goes as far back as it goes forward and our small minds can't comprehend eternity. Some will say that it is all a perpetual circle of a retracting and expanding universe, but then I must say again, "OK, where did that come from?" Now, you may compare God and energy and ask the same thing about where did God come from. He's always been, but energy in itself has no plan or ability to design such a diverse universe. Things are too complex, from the gigantic elaborations in space to the wonderous minute sub-atomic particles, to have haphazardly formed from some explosion or implosion or whatever.

my favorite thing to admit. i dont KNOW. but it does not hurt to theorize. theories lead to hypothosis that in turn leads to experimentation and through that questions not even asked could be answered. but we do have a tendancy to get way ahead of ourselves. like, ok the big bang, got it...now where did that come from? LOL wouldnt it be crazy if say, in an episode of Futurama, the universe just repeated itself? think of how many times you and i would have typed these comments?
02:13 PM on 10/12/2011
Yes, theories and hypotheticals may lead to definates, but the key word is "may", or "might". Still, there are no absolutes in science or theology. That is why the argument between atheists and creationists is moot. They cancel each other out due to a lack of proof. If there was proof it would be all overthe news as the greatest breakthrough in human history. Therein lies the word "faith". It takes faith to believe either argument. Let each of us choose a side and be content with that choice. My choice does not directly affect the opposition and their choice does not affect me. Death is either finality or infinity, there is no in between. So, I stand on faith and faith alone and "hope" that I will be rewarded. If not, then I lose nothing for there will have been nothing to lose. If so, then my efforts in this life will have been worth it all. Go in peace.

What if: some of those far-flung other planets are occupied by human souls (in other bodies) and regarded as "heavens" or "hells" or even "in-between" places similar to "purgatory?"
We may find "ourselves" on one of them when we depart this earth in spirit form.
Or some of their former residents may find themselves born here on earth. For some, life on this planet may be "heaven," and for others, "hell."
Just wondering...

the after life in any religious texts are noted as other worldly, or different planes of existance entirely, what if heaven and hell are different dimensions/universes and they have found a way to cross over? Gods and angels are all beings not of this earth, which by deffinition would be and extraterrestrial being. i really think they fought over us and still are, some for good some for pure amusment and some to watch us fail. just like there are good and bad people im sure there are good and bad ETs. we are not even scratching the surface of our universe. the future would be nice to see. to bad we will most likely leave this earth never knowing.

The Bible makes it very clear that we are alone in the Universe. It also says we are the center of the Universe, there is no Evolution, and the planet is only several thousand years old.Unless of course you believe it's up to 'interpretation' in which case up is down, black is white and no means yes.Oh, it does also state that it is to be taken literally.Unless that is up for interpretation too? I'm confused.

Worship the Living God -- not the Book itself.
Use the Book for instruction and enlightenment, honor it, but remember it was written by many men over a long period of time and cannot (with any intellectual integrity) be taken literally.
If you do this, and listen to your intuitive spiritual self, you will eventually be far less confused and much more free to find bits of eternal Truth, in many places.

Hello oldauntjoy, I think it's the best way of looking at it, it's just a shame that more people don't share that opinion I think the world would be a better place if more did

one of many reasons i follow (notice i did not say "believe") the ancient alien theory, those two words "LIVING GOD" key word living. i am still spiritual but i theorize it is a feeling born to us as a sence of awareness. not a true knowledge so to speak, just an understanding. i dont not know why, but i know i understand. what i understand i do not know but i still know i understand it subconciously. something is there. i agree with your point entirely. well spok...er...writ...typed. w/e LOL
