Tim Tebow Nearly Leads Broncos Comeback Against Chargers (VIDEO)

By ARNIE STAPLETON   10/10/11 06:32 AM ET   AP

DENVER -- Tebow Time might have only been a temporary switch. Or maybe it was the wobbly passing of the torch.

Broncos coach John Fox isn't saying who his starting quarterback is following Denver's 29-24 loss to the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.

Kyle Orton was benched at halftime and Tim Tebow nearly rallied the Broncos from a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit. Fox said he still has to watch the film, talk with his staff, think things over.

The fans who chanted "Tebow! Tebow!" in appreciation after the Broncos (1-4) fell three games behind the Chargers (4-1) are eager for an answer. So are Broncos teammates.

"Kyle's a great quarterback and I have all the faith in the world with him in the game. Tim came in and played great today," guard Chris Kuper said. "What do I say? It's hard to say what's going to happen. As much as we can, we have to tune out the (drama) and stay together in the locker room."

No matter who their leader will be.

"We're looking to have long-term success with somebody, and who that somebody is yet, I'm not sure," said Fox, who indicated he wasn't in any hurry to name his starter.

Tebow ran for a TD and threw for another after replacing Orton to start the third quarter, and had one final shot for the win before his pass fell incomplete in the end zone on the final play.

Maybe Orton returns to the field, uses this as a wake-up call and leads a turnaround. Maybe Tebow earned another shot with his inspiring play after he was buried on the depth chart following a terrible training camp.

Ready or not, Tebow was thrust into the game, appeasing the fans who have been calling for him with the Broncos continuing their losing ways under Orton, who is 6-21 since winning his first six starts in Denver.

"He makes plays, you can't deny that," Chargers linebacker Takeo Spikes said of Tebow. "People can talk about the way he throws the ball, people can talk about his release. But at the end of the day, this league is about what have you done for me lately? And if you can come in and make the plays that another guy can't, then you'll play a long time."

After Orton went 6 for 13 for 34 yards and an interception in the first half, Tebow went 4 for 10 for 79 yards and a touchdown and ran six times for 38 yards and a score.

"Tim did a good job," Orton said. "I thought the offense responded and gave us a chance to win."

Orton wouldn't lobby for a return to the field but said he feels he should still be the starter: "That's how I approach it until he tells me differently," he said of Fox.

Tebow also had no indication who will be under center in two weeks when the Broncos visit Miami.

"Thankfully, I don't have to make those decisions," he said.

It will be intriguing either way.

Orton was pursued by the Dolphins in the offseason but trade talks crumbled presumably over his desire for a long-term contract that would have spread out his $9 million salary for this year. And the Dolphins will be honoring the 2008 national champion Florida Gators – who were led by none other than Tebow, when the Broncos visit Sun Life Stadium on Oct. 23.

Philip Rivers overcame two big turnovers to throw for 250 yards and a touchdown to go with a TD run, and the Chargers prevailed despite a banged-up backfield with Ryan Mathews (calf, wrist) and Mike Tolbert (concussion) getting hurt.

Mathews managed a career-best 125 yards on 25 carries and Nick Novak, who is on the Chargers roster because Nate Kaeding is out for the year after injuring his left knee on the season's opening kickoff, made all five of his field goal attempts.

Down 23-10, the Broncos punted on their first three possessions with Tebow under center before he scored on a 12-yard run. Willis McGahee's 2-point conversion cut San Diego's lead to 26-18 with 6 1/2 minutes left.

Robert Ayers sacked and stripped Rivers on the ensuing possession, and cornerback Andre' Goodman recovered at the San Diego 41 with 4:38 left. Knowshon Moreno turned a short screen pass from Tebow into a 28-yard touchdown. But Brandon Lloyd couldn't come down with the 2-point conversion pass.

After Novak's fifth field goal made it 29-24 with 24 seconds remaining, Tebow hit Lloyd for 20 yards and tight end Daniel Fells for 31. He raced downfield and spiked the ball at the Chargers 29 with a second left.

He took the final snap, spun and scrambled, but his desperation pass fell incomplete in the end zone.

"It just shows the kid is a fighter; we always knew that," Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil said. "Some things just don't change from the collegiate level. Give him credit. He came in and gave us a spark, so we've just got to finish better."

Notes: Cassius Vaughn's 55-yard INT-TD was the first by a Denver defender since Champ Bailey in 2006. ... Broncos RT Orlando Franklin said he would travel to New Jersey to be with his family Monday as they grieve the death of his 20-year-old brother, who died last week. "Football helped me out this week because I used it to escape for a few hours each day," he said.

"Tebow almost pulls of Miracle comeback" - man an "almost miracle" sure comes cheap these days, eh?

Whatever happened to "parting seas" and "water into wine"??! Now all a guy has to do is go 4/10 for 79 yards and lose the game...

I'm praying for you.

"nearly" is the key word that could be used in almost any situation where it didn't happen.
09:46 PM on 10/10/2011
maybe more time spent with your team being a "team" (not a self centered individual) and less time on endorsements for the money - teboo would be a better bronco.

... as Dungy said last night on Sunday night football... Tebow completely brought the fans, the team and everyone ALIVE! Orton is a dead-pan leader and quarterback. His enthusiasm for the game, for the Broncos and for his fans is zilch. Bring Tebow back to play for good now. I love the way he cheers up each player on the sideline, talks 'em up and gives everyone hope and spunk.

How long do you think "good cheer" will last if he can't win? At what point does 'rah, rah" get old? These aren't 18 and 19 year old teenagers...
Just sayin' that at some point he is going to have to actually throw the ball downfield. Screen passes isn't going to cut it.

Ah, just like Cam Newton - I hope he does it. It's always sweet to have the naysayer eat crow.

I almost pulled off a miracle when I was 6-years-old. I saw a bird lying on the ground near the bus stop, picked it up and threw it in the air. It came back down and hit the ground: no miracle.

Who knows if Tebow's an NFL QB or not. But what do the Broncos have to lose by letting him start and finding out? It's not like they'll be risking a SB run if they bench Orton.

In all seriousness, they need to trade someone to get a defensive line.

They've been stopping the run the last three or four games, actually.

Even if Tebow lead the Broncos back the nay-sayers on this message board would find some excuse - some fault - with his performance.

No use arguing with those totally jealous of his athletic ability - which cannot be argued about at all (by any reasonable, objective person).

Face it - TIM TEBOW is a WINNER.

So, if "nay-sayers" always find fault with his performance, what are people that keep calling Tebow a winner even though he's yet to prove anything?
05:13 PM on 10/10/2011
Do you live on the planet "Denial", or is your complete grasp of Tim Tebow's athletic accomplishments because you haven't bothered to find out? He is a WINNER - in life, on the field, as a role model, and apparently in the locker room, did you even read the story?
07:06 PM on 10/10/2011
... he hasn't had the proper length of time or had the proper back-up and support from his team, coaches and owner yet. Give him the rest of this season and next... to see if indeed he can make the Broncos a winning team or not.
05:10 PM on 10/10/2011
he lost. and you still call him a winner.

Tim Tebow gets way too much flak for honestly being a gutsy player who can win when the Gators handed him the ball. First of all, if I'm the Broncos coach he's unequivocally my Quarterback choice, and I'm sensing John Fox is slowly realizing this. People want to criticize Tebow for being "not this" or "not that", but ultimately these same people fail to recognize that you can have all the measurables and still be a pile of doody. Ask Carmizzi or Jake Plummer (or possibly Cam Newton) about having measurables that amounted to nothing in the NFL. What I like about Tebow is he actively concentrates on doing what he needs to do to win and succeed. I'm amused by all his "haters" because he constantly proves them wrong, and that ability to face criticism and win perhaps in spite of it is the mark of a champion.

Good players learn to play with flaws, and generally have flaws, very noticiable and very serious flaws. That's what makes them great IMO. Tebow will work harder because he doesn't have all the tangibles, and because he's not the obvious choice. The Quarterback's job is really 98% a mental game. I feel like Tebow's critics feel as though they are informing Tebow of something he doesn't know. Tebow knows his limitations, and seems to know how to play with them, and that's the mark of a good quarterback.

The Broncos coaching staff just let the fans run the team. Now the Fans will pay their price for wanting a kid that is the Third String QB to start. Good Luck Denver! Tebow isn't Cam Newton or even on the level of a Trent Dilfer.

I honestly don't get the Tebow hate. So many professional athletes make a big deal about being Christians... he seems to be one of the least hypocritical, so why is he the biggest target?

And I'm an atheist!

Yeah, but Tebow isn't up for a "draft" is he. This is his second year on the team that selected him FIRST ROUND. He can't displace Kyle frigging Orton...

Is the Head coach, Offensive Coordinator, position coach, GM, VP, Owner all conspiring against him?

Question - would you really spend all your time posting your support if he was Muslim or black?

Well, he can't throw a spiral, his release is not as quite as quick as ex VP Cheney, he yells and screams and jumps up and down in the huddle, he bobbles the ball under center, and he pulls off miracles by not winning. But he does have some awesome characteristics. He wants to convert us to his brand of religion, and he's a mama's boy.

Michael Jordan has/had underwear commercials, Joe Montana had underwear commercials (as I;m sure others have as well) - atheletes get endorsements. SO WHAT??
