Walmart China Closes Chongqing Stores Amidst Pork Mislabeling Scandal

10/10/11 06:32 AM ET   AP

SHANGHAI -- Wal-Mart has been ordered to temporarily close some stores in the Chinese city of Chongqing and to pay 2.7 million yuan ($421,000) in fines following an investigation into the mislabeling of tons of regular pork as "organic."

The retail giant said Monday in a statement that Chongqing police had detained some of its employees over what has been dubbed the "green pork" incident. It apologized to shoppers for any inconvenience and said it was cooperating with authorities.

Wal-Mart has 10 stores and two affiliates in Chongqing, a massive metropolis of 32 million people in western China. The company said it was ordered to close some of its stores in the city, but did not say exactly how many. State media reported all 12 stores were temporarily closed.

China still is reporting constant problems with mislabeling, repackaging of expired food, counterfeit and substandard food and other issues despite long and repeated efforts to improve enforcement of food safety rules. Such cases are common in markets and smaller stores, but alleged violations by big foreign stores tend to draw more attention.

The Wal-Mart stores were accused of selling more than 63,500 kilograms (14.4 tons) of mislabeled pork, the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing the director of the Chongqing Administration of Industry and Commerce, Huang Bo.

He said the fine amounted to 10 times the value of the falsely labeled pork sold. The report said Wal-Mart had been repeatedly punished for violating food standards and other rules since it began operating in Chongqing in 2006.

"Wal-Mart is committed to protecting the rights of consumers and will spare no efforts in this regard," the company said in the statement.

According to its website, Wal-Mart has 284 outlets in more than 100 Chinese cities. Some are outlets of local retail chains acquired by Wal-Mart.

Never mind China. I went to a Walmart in Minnesota on Saturday and bought what was sold as Roast beef from the deli case. When I got it home I saw it was some sort of processed loaf meat, not roast beef. But it sure looks like roast beef until you take a closer look.

Meat glue, maybe? At least, I think that's what it is called. I watched a video on how different meat parts can be reformed together and it becomes really difficult to tell it from the real thing (in some cases, obviously not yours!). The video I watched said it is so disturbing because, while we are in essence eating the same product, you would need to cook it differently since it has been handled throughout (instead of just on the outside). Rare would not be okay - but if you didn't know meat glue had been used...

This doesn't even look like roast beef except for the color, upon close inspection. It is clearly some sort of processed product like bologna. there is no beef texture at all. I am seriously considering filing a consumer fraud lawsuit against Walmart.

Most of the comments seem to focus on organic portk vs non-organic portk and ignore the greater issue of constant problems with mislabeling, repackaging of expired food, counterfeit and substandard food and other issues, all potentially life threantning problems. Hmmm.

So? What happens in China stays in China for the most part. Interesting. Wonder if the Chinese are complaining about the crap that Wal-Mart is selling them? You know the cheap crappy made Chinese stuff??

I am so happy not to ever have to worry about green pork.

Cheap campaign mechanism. Everyone knows that the big boss of Chongqing craves a seat in the central headquarter of CCP.

Back in the 70's we bought our baby a rubber toy and when I opened the container we noticed a very strong oder of incecticide, I checked where it was made....right it was made in China. I threw the toy in our burn pile and called the store and told them about it.
My point is that some products come to us with the intent to harm and if the CONservatives and baggies get away with stripping the FDA , EPA and other important agencies safeguarding our health you can expect more bad products making it into your home.

Wal Mart has Beef Heart. It's meat from smooth muscle. It's very lean, very dark red juicy meat. I slice it into very thin slices with a Waverex knife then stir fry it with onions and Holland bell peppers and serve it with rice....Al-
