Alabama Immigration Law: Protesters Stage Work Stoppages, Shut Down Businesses

Alabama Immigration Law Protests

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. (AP) -- At least a half-dozen poultry plants shut down or scaled back operations Wednesday and many other businesses closed as Hispanics in Alabama skipped work to protest the state's toughest-in-the-nation immigration law.

The work stoppage was aimed at demonstrating the economic contribution of Alabama's Hispanic immigrants. It was unclear exactly how widespread the protests were, but a poultry company spokesman said officials were reporting unusually high absences at plants in northeast Alabama, where much of the state's chicken industry is based.

In the northeast Alabama town of Albertville, numerous Hispanic-owned businesses along Main Street had the lights off and signs that said they wouldn't be open. Mexican restaurants, a bank that caters to Hispanics, small grocery stores and supermarkets were all shuttered.

Jose Contreras owns a restaurant and store on Main Street. He said he was losing about $2,500 in revenue by shutting down.

"We closed because we need to open the eyes of the people who are operating this state," said Contreras, originally from the Dominican Republic and a U.S. citizen. "It's an example of if the law pushes too much, what will happen."

Republican supporters say Alabama's strict new immigration law was intended to force undocumented workers out of jobs and help legal residents find work in a state suffering from high unemployment.

The law allows police to detain people indefinitely if they are suspected of being in the country illegally and requires schools to check the status of new students when they enroll.

Since a federal judge upheld much of the law two weeks ago, many frightened Hispanics have hid in their homes or fled Alabama. Schools have reported high absentee rates among Hispanic students, and officials said even more students were absent Wednesday, apparently because of the protest.

At Crossville Elementary School in DeKalb County, Principal Ed Burke said about 160 of the school's 600 students weren't in class.

"We normally would have about 20 or 30 out," he said.

The Obama administration is among the critics of the new law and asked a federal appeals court Wednesday to at least temporarily block enforcement, arguing in court documents the statute oversteps the state's authority. It's not clear when the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals will rule on the administration's request for a preliminary injunction.

Not far from Contreras' businesses, the parking lot was virtually empty at a Wayne Farms poultry plant that employs about 850 people. Company spokesman Frank Singleton said other plants were also reporting unusually high absences.

"We know it's related to the immigration law. I don't think it's going to be just today," he said.

The protests were being promoted partly through Facebook and other social media, as well as a Spanish-language radio station in Birmingham. Supporters say they want to show the economic impact of Hispanic people in Alabama and demonstrate solidarity in opposition to the law.

There are an estimated 185,000 Hispanics in Alabama. The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that 70 percent of the state's Hispanic residents are Mexican.

Any business that hires illegal workers deserves what they get. Hopefully, this will be a lesson to them.

I have come to the conclusion that the American government has made a secret deal with Mexico and other Latin American countries agreeing to allow all immigration, legal or otherwise, in exchange for those countries' protection of multinational (so-called American) corporations. That's why Latinos are seemingly above the law, untouchable for the most part, but ICE will send the poor Haitians right back on the leaky boats they came in on—and anyone else, as well, for that matter. How long can the government turn a blind eye to the inundation from Latin America and Mexico and pretend it's just such a complex problem that it doesn't know what to do. Please. All those companies that hire illegals need to pay an exorbitant tax to the local communities who take in all these illegals and have to deal with all the problems attendant with having a large illegal population. Mine is one of them. As things currently stand, the government is taking money from me and my neighbors, and putting it in the pocket of the corporations who hire illegal workers for a pittance with no health care benefits. I'm liberal, and I do care about people but I'm tired of being the chump who's always in debt because my taxes keep escalating year after year.

If I ran a company in Alabama the last thing I would want to broadcast is the insinuation that I had hired a large number of illegal workers. There are criminal charges for knowingly doing that. Of course, determining legal residency quickly and easily for businesses is difficult when the federal government isn't inclined to help out.

I, basically, agree with what you are saying.
If they are here 'LEGALLY' they have nothing to fear. If they aren't, they need to leave and come back through 'LEGAL' means.
I don't begrudge anyone a better life......just do it the right way. It is a slap in the face to all who have come here and became citizens through the proper channels.

Obama cannot ignore the state reactions to excessive illegal immigration in light of their ever-shrinking budgets. Georgia passes a stringent law against illegals, then Oklahoma, then Texas (well, sort of), then Arizona, then Alabama...anyone see a pattern here? CA hasn't done much, and is just about in the hole financially because the illegals who could get there have hopped on I-10 and gone there already. The midwest and northern states remain relatively clueless, because they have not been as heavily impacted from illegal immigration - but just wait, as the illegals flee from the states that enact laws to discourage them residing there, guess where they'll go, if they don't do the right thing and return to their home countries.

Good, let the businesses close down and lose money. They're not only shooting themselves in the foot, but they're also alerting Alabama citizens as to which businesses are pro-illegal alien. Hopefully people make a note of those businesses and refuse to do business with them in the future.

Well said. I would not frequent them either. Illegal is illegal. If you condone these activities you are not any better than the criminals themselves. Most people do not realize the financial burden they put on our system. I think we should take the fed money allocated to foreign aide and use it to ship ALL illegals BACK HOME.....

Alright Alabama, here's your chance to "take back" part of your country.

You successfully passed legislation to deal with the immigrants in your state. So, the question is, when are you people who were whining about how "them immuhgrunts are stealin' our jobs!" going to go pitch in & grab one of the jobs that have opened up in the poultry plants & in the fields of Alabama?

If you're not going to go do something to help out, now that jobs have become available due to immigrants leaving the state thanks to the legislation that you supported, then do us all a favor & shut yer pie hole about how immigrants are stealing jobs. If it really bothered you as much as your bleating suggests, then you'd sack up & put your money where your mouth is.
07:09 PM on 10/13/2011
I am sure the jobs will start to fill as soon as businesses realize they need to pay more than they were getting by paying illegals.

Who cares the illegals are leaving so the law has done its job. There will be lower population less strain on welfare programs and legal americans can take those jobs. Less students in each classroom which is what everyone was worried about anyway. Students per teacher ratio will be lower so our legal children will get a better education. Amen for this law, Illegals deserve no special treatment, they are criminals in every sense. ID theft is a felony

They are not here illegally and my taxes should not be raised to provide services to non-americans. I feel bad for these people but you will pay the price for ignoring our laws. Just like any American will pay the price for ignoring american laws. Illegals should receive no special treatement and should be held accountable in every sense. Send Mexico a bill for the billions we spend every year on its citizens and then we can talk.

.SO.WHEN A FAMOUS CHICKEN PRODUCER FORGED THOSE 10,000 FAKE SOCIOL SECURITY CARDS FOR ALL THOSE ILLEGALS...AND THEY PAID A FINE OF A FEW THOUSAND DOLLARS......THAT WAS OK TO YOU?

THEY LAUGHED ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK!
11:49 AM on 10/14/2011
No that famous chicken producer should have gone to jail. But Illegals get those ID's all on there own as well. Is that ok to you? Why has ID theft sky rocketed in America? I am all for E-verify for employers and stiff penalties once the system in place for anyone that hires illegal (prison time stiff penalties). I am also for E-verify to be used for any government benefits. Whether illegals are denied those benefits are up to the politicians but we should know exactly how much is being spent supporting these people. There is no reason not to know.
03:24 PM on 10/13/2011
Sorry even our Pre-Colombian ancestors may have come here "illegally" but they were the First Americans. Columbus, the settlers of Jamestown and Plymouth, etc came here "illegally" and kept "illegally" spreading through the Native American territories. The tragedy of the Trail of Tears is just one major example of using "legal" methods to "illegally" steal land from native Americans.

I can understand patrolling our borders especially against the drug cartels but why can't we understand those immigrants that want to come here to earn an honest buck by doing many of the jobs that most Americans turn up their noses at? If we updated and improved the worker Visa program we could possibly cut down on the amount of illegal immigrants coming here. We'll never be able to shut it down completely.

"Native Americans experienced many eras of population increase and population decreases many times prior to the arrival of the Europeans. There is also evidence of
pre-Colombian epidemics. The Native American population declined drastically, especially in Mexico, upon the arrival of the Europeans, and then grew as the introduction
of horses created the Native American “horse culture” on the Great Plains. Casualties produced by combat between European and Native Americans were insignificant,
and was probably less than the casualties inflicted by tribes on each other. For example, as the Lakota (Sioux) migrated east from the Great Lakes to the Black Hills
in the late 1700s, they pushed aside or exterminated the tribes that blocked their path. At one village, they slaughtered 400 men, women and children. By way of comparison,
180 Native Americans died during the Sand Creek Massacre, the most infamous atrocity committed by Europeans against Native Americans."
