Chuck Schumer: 'Almost Impossible' Democrats Will Lose Senate In 2012

Chuck Schumer 2012

First Posted: 10/12/11 12:46 PM ET Updated: 12/12/11 05:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) was bullish on Wednesday on the Democratic Party's chances in the 2012 election, saying the party is likely to keep incumbents in office and pick up a few others.

"I think it's moving in the right direction," he said during a breakfast at moderate think tank Third Way. "It's almost impossible to say we'll lose the Senate, unless the roof falls in."

Schumer, who is the number three leader among Senate Democrats, said Democrats would win by sticking to an anti-Tea Party message, blaming the movement for blocking major jobs legislation in both houses. Democrats plan to blame "Tea Party economics" for holding up bills that would aid the economy, he wrote in a memo released on Wednesday.

By blaming the Tea Party, Schumer said Democrats may be able to pick up "a seat or two" in Indiana, Nevada, Arizona and Massachusetts, where Democrat Elizabeth Warren is taking on Republican Sen. Scott Brown.

"In a certain sense it's sort of a sword and a shield. The sword is our effort to create things on jobs and the shield is that what's preventing us from moving forward is Tea Party economics," he said. "The Tea Party has a strangle hold on the Republican party. ... They're weakening the economy in the short term by not letting us do things that economists want."

Republicans have taken a different tack than Democrats on economic growth, arguing that deficit reduction, spending cuts and deregulation will make a dent in unemployment and raise income levels for the middle class. Democrats, meanwhile, are pushing for infrastructure spending and a payroll tax break to stimulate the economy as part of a jobs bill released by President Barack Obama.

The Democratic Party, particularly in the Senate, is hammering the point that Republicans oppose the president's jobs bill. They received some evidence for this argument Tuesday evening, when Senate Republicans voted against moving forward with Obama's American Jobs Act.

Of course, a handful of Senate Democrats also oppose the bill in its current form. Sens. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) and Jon Tester (D-Mont.) voted against moving forward with the bill, while Sens. Jim Webb (D-Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.) voted for it but said they had concerns about the bill that they hoped to address later.

Schumer took issue with reports that Democrats had failed by barely securing a simple majority vote on the president's jobs bill.

"It wasn't that easy to get to 51," he said. "The idea that this is a major setback is wrong."

Democratic leaders now plan to take on the jobs bill piece by piece, attempting to make Republicans look bad if they oppose measures they previously supported. If they don't support jobs bills, it's "going to highlight" that Republicans are blocking economic growth, Schumer said.

"We'd much rather the Republicans support us and get something done with the economy," Schumer said. "But it's a win-win for us. If they support us, we'll get something done with the economy."

That's what the liberals thought about Kennedy's senate seat or the last New York election. Democrats should take note that their past actions and votes. The way they passed the Unconstitutional Healthcare Bill that only now we are discovering the horrors of should be a wake up call to everyone. They didn't want it voted on they wanted to dictate it through and they did. When you lose sight of the people and how the people feel then you should lose your job. Democrats look at who has kidnapped our party? The only way to get a message through and restore the Democratic party to that of the 60's is to send a strong signal to those in office now. That signal is that they are not entrenched and safe and that their actions do matter and count. I was a Democrat then an Independent, after Carter, but given the actions of our current President who shames America and Pelosi and Reid and that bunch I'm anything but Democrat today.

A lot but not all of the Republicans are bigots,Fox would have had a fit,if it had been a Dem.referring
to Obama as our Boy as Pat Buchanan did or the one issued by a tea party congressman referring
to him as a tar baby.and Rick Perry's N-Rock hunting place.Fox wasn't up in the air over this
because that's what they promote each and every day with joy and relish.the president is berated
every day on Fox on everything that he does or doesn't do.

What we really need is another big change in the House of Reps. Democrats have to take control of the House. It means that each Democrat needs to canvas his neighborhood, stand on a corner, and point out why a vote for the Republican is a vote for stagnation. You have the Republican record to back you up

Yeah those first two years of Obama's Presidency when the Democrats could pass anything they wanted regardless of what the Republicans did or felt worked out good didn't it? They had their ultimate chance to show what they could do and make it right but did they? They had the prime chance to change everything without worrying about objections from the Republicans for they didn't have enough numbers to effect anything yet to hear Democrats talk about that now they still want to talk like it was the Republicans that were responsible. At least the Democrats don't have to worry about some people. They have their base that are so brainwashed that they only see what the Party wants them to see.

How about waking up and realizing that you had total control of not only the House, Senate and the Presidency but had control that could not be contested yet they failed miserably and now you want to return to that same condition??? I say it's time to give the Republicans the SAME control that the Democrats had ( House, Senate and Presidency) and see what they can do with it. I doubt it could be much worse than we have now for right now we are on the edge of losing our whole country economically under the huge massive expenditures that happened in the last three years. Spending that made Bush even look cheap.

Democrats may keep the senate, true. But that doesn't necessarily help the American people. Who needs Republicans when we have Democrats like Max Baucus?

Democrats are the New Republicans by Bill Maher. Enjoy!

Schumer, my Senator btw, is taking up the mantle that apparently Obama has decided to abandon, speaking up for Democratic and democratic principles. Just hope the election is in time before this country's society and economy really falls apart. The Republican have proven that they really don't give a good gd if it does.

The younger generation is saddled with student loan debt, we need a program to help them pay down that debt.We need a transaction tax on banks and wall street transactions to help them
pay down the debt they incurred. That would help our economy a great deal.Republican response =
no no no tax cuts for rich, only the very wealthy count. no jobs bill, no debt reduction, no shared sacrifice.

You DO realize that the bank would just pass this new tax on to their customers in the form of higher fees....Right?
03:50 PM on 10/13/2011
Only if you were willing to pay . The ideal that corporate taxes are charged to the consumer is false . Corporations charge the consumer the absolute maximum that they feel they can get away with . Then they pay their expences and whatevers left goes to the shareholders . The shareholders are the ones who pay .

I was around and Bush got what he deserved. Didn't see him fighting for jobs or the people of this country. Saw a President that was for big business and war. He still isn't on the all time favorite President list for his achievements. Unless your big business don't really think he had many fans. Got to say he made me a lot of money when the economy is down the Rail Roads make lots of money. I loved the money but hated what he was doing to the country. Would have traded the bucks for a President that cared about the people not the rich. Maybe that is why the a lot of the rich are willing to pay their fare share now?

Bush got approval for raising the debt ceiling 8 times during his presidency without any drama. Bush was never called Hitler or a socialist. Bush never was called a liar in halls of Congress (even though he did lie about WMDs and invading Iraq).

Perhaps it would revert back to capitalism.

Back in 1966 Ezra Taft Benson talked face to face with Krushchev., He indicated that his grandchildren would live under communism. After assuring him that he expected to do all in my power to assure that his and all other grandchildren will live under freedom he arrogantly declared in substance:
“You Americans are so gullible. No, you won’t accept communism outright, but we’ll keep feeding you small doses of socialism until you’ll finally wake up and find you already have communism. We won’t have to fight you. We’ll so weaken your economy until you’ll fall like overripe fruit into our hands."
=============================

In time, all of you who lived through the height of the cold war will be infirm or pushing up daisies, and we will not have to suffer your inane arguments any longer.

What would we call what has happened since Nov. 2010 when right wing extremists took over the House?

Do you mean Jan. 2011?

It is time every Democrat in office today honors those that had made their stand on Health Care Reform and who was cut down by a fear mongering and hateful contingent of right wing fanatical extremists in the 2010 mid-terms and you honor those lost Democrats not passively or with closed eyes as was used when attempting to replace the honorable Ted Kennedy, may he rest in piece, a seat the Democrats lost because of its own placidity but instead meet them in 2012 with the fury of directed wrath directed at those that choose to be called today's Republicans but whom we now more commonly regard only as baggers. Stands like this one by NY's Senator Schumer to the hard-line stance that President Obama is now initiating is exactly what I as Democrat want to hear and see from the party I support. If nothing else use the fire and brimstone tactics of the extremists on the right to at least purge the baggers from the Republican party. Since the president obtained office he has done everything possible to work with the non working right wing but 2012 is looking more and more like a time to remove the right wing and cauterize what remains for if it wasn't for a strong willed president we'd be in a severe depression instead of a sluggishly growing economy. Republicans are a dangerous but small infection and 2012 is the cure! Obama/Democrats 2012

it seems lie you are the one thats ignorant because you have facts there in your face and you want to disagree with facts and then you want to insult people that side with schumer and the president so that makes you the ignorant one!

Republicans and Democrats both have things they want to cut, yet they disagree on where the cuts should be, why is that? I don’t believe it’s caused as much by different ideologies as it is by outside contributors (lobbyists). If these idiots in both parties weren’t so interested in getting re-elected and taking all the perks that outside interests offer them, they may start voting on things for the better of the people instead of themselves. We are never going to get them to introduce legislature for term limits until we can get the old incumbents (in both parties) out of there and that’s only going to happen by removal and replacement. Even if you disagree with me about the ideologies part, I think most Americans would agree it’s worth the chance of removing them just to see who is right and who is wrong. Party affiliations should mean very little, a candidate should be held accountable for all his/her promises and if even one vote goes against what they promised they should be removed. There are plenty of good honest moral people out there waiting to get a chance.

Apparently no one told him how a jinx works. Didn't Pelosi say the same thing about the House? And now this ja*k*ss want's to go and tempt fate? What I want to hear is that "It is almost impossible for any incumbent to get reelected in 2012."
