Derrick Mason Traded: Jets Deal Veteran Receiver To Texans

Veteran wide receiver Derrick Mason is on the move again. Just five weeks into the NFL season, the New York Jets (2-3) have decided to trade Mason to the Houston Texans for a conditional seventh-round draft pick.

Considering the injury to star wideout Andre Johnson, the move makes a lot of sense for the Texans. As for the Jets, the move raises more questions than it provides answers.

Before the season began, Jets coach Rex Ryan predicted that Mason would catch 90-100 passes this season. Through five games with the Jets, Mason has 13 receptions. He may still validate Ryan's prediction, but he'll be doing it in another uniform. The first signs that Mason's relationship with the Jets was souring came on Sunday during the Jets' loss the Patriots. Before the game, the New York Daily News reported that Mason, along with teammates Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress, complained to Ryan about offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer's system over the past few weeks.

The Jets denied the report just before the game against their AFC East rivals, but Ryan's benching of Mason spoke far louder than any denial. Replaced by rookie Jeremy Kerley, speculation arose about whether Mason was benched for his controversial comments following a loss to the Ravens in Week 4. But the Jets denied that too.

Mason, 37, was released by Baltimore shortly after the lockout ended. The Jets picked him up quickly in Early August.
