Now, in the film she does try to use In Vitro Fertilization first but is told she has a very small chance of successfully being impregnated by her physician. She then decides on surrogacy. The film which came out in 2008 is an accurate reflection of real life, as the number of surrogate births in the United States has increased steadily over the past two decades. Numbers from the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology place the number of surrogate births at about 260 in 2006, while industry experts estimate there to have been about 1,000 in 2009.
