Tavis Smiley Tackles Poverty In New Series

Tavis Smiley

LYNN ELBER   10/11/11 05:04 PM ET   AP

LOS ANGELES — Tavis Smiley had to look no further than his own circle of family and friends to see the painful effects of the ragged U.S. economy to know he needed to act.

The radio and TV host is doing what he can for those close to him in need of money or work, he said. For the broader problem, Smiley is using his PBS series this week to put what he calls a "human face" on the nation's poverty statistics.

Each nightly episode of "Tavis Smiley" is featuring clips from an 11-state, 18-city tour Smiley and Princeton University professor Cornel West took in August to detail the economy's effect on individuals and families. There are follow-up discussions with anti-poverty advocates and other guests, including Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

His intent, Smiley said, is to "get this issue higher up on the American agenda."

"We have to get serious about eradicating poverty in the long run while we create jobs in the short run," he said.

While millions of Americans are suffering financially, Smiley said he also felt compelled to address the particularly harsh blow the economy has dealt black Americans.

According to a recent Census Bureau report, the overall poverty rate climbed to 15.1 percent last year, from 14.3 percent the year before, as a record 46.2 million Americans were counted among the impoverished.

Poverty increased among all ethnic groups, except Asians, with blacks the hardest hit by a poverty rate of 27.4 percent and with 26.6 percent of Hispanics in poverty. In comparison, the poverty rate for white Americans was 9.9 percent.

What Smiley and West found on their tour was both heart-breaking and inspiring, they said. It was also an introduction to poverty's changing face.

"The new poor in this country is the former middle class," Smiley said.

West recalled one Illinois husband and wife who fell from earning $100,000 a year to $15,000. The couple experienced a shift in perspective that the professor hopes will resonate with viewers.

"Once they had blamed the poor for their plight. Now they can see being poor is a different kind of reality," he said.

A national poverty summit that brings together economic, social and cultural leaders is needed, Smiley said. He also called for continued government action in the face of sharp political division.

His journey across America uncovered "rays of hope in programs that are working on the ground, right now. The federal government has to find the will to continue to fund those programs in honor of a better tomorrow," he said.

Sometimes I feel that being a "pastor" or so call "social activities" is just being an opportunist. Have these folks every talk the truth about the lack of businesses/corporation owns by Blacks and how too many Black nations are fugging up their own people. Asians do business very well with other Asian nations, but Blacks are stuck in this individualistic road, unless it's singing and dancing.

Tavis has been supposedly "tackling" this problem for YEARS...He wrote several books even one that was a "covenant." Results: Uh the same State of the Black Union Smiley has been hyping for years at a conference by that name...

Neither he nor Cornel West have done anything over the past 10 years that has changed the state of black America. Now they are just two crabs in the barrel trying to pull down another...

"Poverty increased among all ethnic groups, except Asians, with blacks the hardest hit by a poverty rate of 27.4 percent and with 26.6 percent of Hispanics in poverty. In comparison, the poverty rate for white Americans was 9.9 percent."

Those statistics say will go right over most heads.

Can someone tell me why HP would have a story leading off the Media page (Smiley and West on O'Reilly) and have the comment section already closed? I just don't get that.
03:55 PM on 10/12/2011
Why did HP close the comments on the O'Riley/Smiley-Cornel story... I've never seen that happen before.... I wanted to comment on how "on edge" oriley was when he thought Smiley called him a liar... and he said, if fact, that bill was right.... and had to spell it out for him... I understand there was a delay and echo in the room but he sure was quick on the "trigger"....

These "poverty pimps." Notice how Smiley and West have ignored the union fight? Why? Because Smiley is Wal-Mart sponsored. 1% of Wal-Mart employees earn above minimum wage.

I noticed similar problems with other PBS shows, the newshour and Washington week. PBS is the most honest ones left, yet they’re are corrupted by corporate money aswell.

As a black woman, I do not trust either of these two men. I like the term "poverty pimps" you used to describe these two men, who are just out to ensure they ARE NOT the ones who end up in poverty.

As a black woman, I trust both of these two men. Aside from whatever personal beefs they have had with Obama (which people love to exacerbate and leech on to) they have always spoken out about issues that affect Americans and discussed how to solve them.

That's a sight more than what most of us do.

This comment was for Mr. Tavis talk with O'Reilly but they closed the comments down. Bill thinks he has a quick wit but it's only the result of his shallow thoughts. Of course, having a shady brain only amplifies the bile of his talk. I associate the shady brain syndrome, to a person who commits a despicable act and is caught stone cold red handed, then says I didn't do it. And in other news, The BBC reported American Corps. are sitting on 2 trillion dollars which they claim is for a rainy day, talk about a self-fulfilling dark prophesy. So in other words, money that can be spent creating jobs is not. Jobs are what people need to live and in turn also make money for corps., the cycle of commerce. I guess big corps. are rich enough and can now can starve the middle man to death. They must have been really pissed at us more making them waste their money on the 2008 election but they did have a back up plan. Signed 99%er.

I saw that! Why did they close the comments, then keep that the headline on the Media page? I had things to say, but never mind. O'Reilly will never be a match for either of these men, much less both at the same time.

here is the main objectives of MSM in the USA
1)tabloid entertainment .....for the masses ( emotions overcome the brain for critical thinking)
2)propaganda for the rich , ( they were poor folks like everybody else some time ago and they need all of their money now )...nobody ever said that they become rich because a different system of rules and regulations was in place 20-25 years ago in our government that do not exist anymore.
3)total luck of objectivity of news reporting, ( opinion, bias and filtering on everything and everybody)

Chris Matthews described it as "stirring the pot" --something he admitted to doing from time to time on his show. His stirring of the pot would explain his support for Palin one day and then turn around the next day and say she needs to read a book.

Just yesterday, he had a media-fabricated story about Obama dumping Biden and adding Hillary to the ticket for the 2012 election. It was a completely unncessary story, given all the issues this country faces. The media is so obsessed with speculating, exaggerating, rumor, scandal, and just plain old "tabloid entertainment" like you said...faved

Does Smiley mention in the series how Texas State University stripped his name off their communications school because Mr Accountability did not deliver on the pledge he made?

Just saying ..

Tavis gets demonized for his ego and slight hateration of Obama, but at the end of the day the brother is great at his job and cares about the plights of Americans. I'm glad to see this documentary from him.

Thank you to Travis for focusing on this issue.
I only wish that the people that really need to 'get' this message would be the types that actually watch PBS.
