To Baby, A Magazine Is An IPad That Doesn't Work (VIDEO)

Baby

Imagine baby's frustration when she discovers a magazine is just, well, a magazine.

No sliding images. No interactive content. Nothing for those adorable chubby hands to play with but pages filled with words.

Watch as this 1-year-old moves her little finger up and down on the pages of Marie Claire hoping for some movement. Sorry, kid. Nothing's going to happen.

"Who broke the iPad?" she likely wonders.

"It's a magazine," mom or dad would say. "A print publication millions read every day. It's not supposed to move."

"Imagine that," she'd think.

The new generation is growing up with more digital than print media. They play with their parents' smartphones, tablets, laptops. We guess It's only natural that they examine items that don't respond to touch -- and then move on to the things that do.

I think the baby is adorable, I don't know the parents so I can't judge their parenting skills. I do know however that modern technology is here to stay and kids need to be aware of how to use it. My 5 year old grandson is in kindergarden and they are already teaching them computer technology. He also has his own cell phone, but his parents won't let him call anyone instead they're teaching him how to text and spell out the words, not the short versions that most people use. When I texed him back I have to remind myself to spell out the words in full. I think that it's important to teach young kids about technology as it changes everyday. I can't keep up with all the modern technology that's out today, I just hope that the generation that's growing up today can keep up with it. The point I'm trying to make is if a person has a baby then I think it's a smart idea to introduce them to technology as soon as possible, because it's not going away, it's only going to get more complicated (to me anyway) kids need to learn how to use technology if they want to keep up with the ever changing world. I do agree however that kids need outdoor physical activity as well.

The part where she presses on her thigh to test whether her finger still works is too precious!...lol.

Some posters are claiming to be "disturbed" by this video and are questioning the parental skills of the baby's parents. I must confess that I am EXTREMELY disturbed that the aforesaid people - on a progressive website at that - are refusing to accept the realities of the new/next generation.

Have you any idea the depth of knowledge and creativity that a baby can gain from interacting with this kind of a device?!? My question is rhetorical, of course! The truth of the matter is, the next/new generation will use these kinds of "gadgets" to accomplish MOST of their tasks, i,e. read a book, do reserach, etc. This is in no way a "sad commentary" on society as some are pontificating! I love the video and applaud the parents for embracing the reality of their child's life.

I don't really see how this is a jab at Steve Jobs? It's amazing to watch. The girls I used to nanny for both have ipads. Their 2 year old brother knew how to use an iphone before the ipad even came out. He knows how to operate a mouse on his parents' mac. This is their future. How is it a bad thing? They all still love books. They have amazing, scholarly parents who encourage and challenge them. They're not allowed to have certain apps and have to give their ipads, iphones, and whatever else to their parents before bedtime. It's not just a toy. It is a tool. Don't be so dismissive. You sound like a bunch of old folks offended by "these kids' new fangled technology".

Sheesh.

Dismissive old folk? Hardly... I have 2 kid,s lots of iDevices, including iPads. I use them in my classroom as well.

I have seen this posted elsewhere, and framed in a jabbing-Jobs way, because some find it horrifying that a baby would try to operate the magazine in that manner. I happen to think it's funny that one would react in that way, because Steve Jobs didn't wire their brain in that way... their parents are providing the technology and permitting the use of it that allows the baby's natural reaction to occur. For good or bad, parents are the link in between Jobs and the baby.

The jab at Steve Jobs and her baby's OS is funny... not that the parent provided the iPad, and permitted the baby to play it or anything.

Reminds me of the time in the ancient times when we used VCR's. Tape was stuck in the slot and wouldn't eject. Turns out the two year old had stuffed his bagel with jam in to heat it up.

Am I the only one who actually got a little choked up--not in a good way?

Nope. This is so depressing!

Why? I to its wonderful that a young person expects media to be interactive. I think the worst part of it is for the young person to be exposed to the images in modern magazines. That's the real harm in our society.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

Because the simple things like a book aren't enough to a child (an infant, even) nowadays.........the world is too high tech and the simple pleasures in life are going to the wayside.......climbing trees, lying on the grass looking at clouds, skipping stones.....That's not enough for the new generation of kids. Now it's, Where's my gaming system, computer, IPad, IPhone, etc.........sad, really.......
