Man Charged In Murder Of His 3-Month-Old Daughter

A Chicago man was charged Thursday with one count of first-degree murder in the death of his 3-month-old daughter.

Jovanni Tufele, 23, of the 5100 block of West Ainslie Street, and the child's mother had brought their daughter, Jayden Tufele, to Children's Memorial Hospital on Monday, according to the Chicago Tribune.

There, doctors realized that she had suffered injuries including a fractured collarbone, four acute rib fractures, bleeding in the brain in two spots and retinal hemorrhages in both eyes. Two older rib fractures were also noted. She was pronounced dead at 5:12 p.m. Tuesday, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Her death was ruled a homicide Wednesday.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is currently looking into allegations of child abuse in the girl's death, interviewing both parents. The Tribune reports the agency never received previous reports of abuse in the home.

As of Thursday afternoon, the baby's mother has not been charged, according to CBS Chicago.

Tufele is expected to appear in a bond hearing on Friday.
