Ohio Cat Stuck In Van Needs Help From Mechanic And Animal Shelter

10/14/11 07:23 PM ET   AP

HILLIARD, Ohio — A mechanic was the one doing the surgery at an Ohio animal facility when a woman drove in with a cat stuck behind her minivan's dashboard.

WBNS-TV reports ( ) the mechanic had to take apart the dash during a three-hour rescue operation Thursday in the Columbus suburb of Hilliard. http://bit.ly/nXgnpB

Driver Nehal Dhruve (NAY'-hahl DROOV) says she hit the cat with her van and decided to take it to the local humane society. The brown and black cat wouldn't stay on the van's seat but instead hopped down and climbed up under the dashboard.

Mechanic Daryl McKay cut his hands trying to free the feline, so an animal control staffer with smaller hands took over and pulled it out.

Dhruve says she now wants to adopt the cat.

I adopted a four year old shelter cat 6 weeks ago. He is wonderful! I looked at all the local shelter websites. I then visited most of the shelters and played with 50 or 60 cats. I am convinced that I got the very best one for my lifestyle. Only problem is he is so playful, I think he would appreciate a little friend. So, I am looking again. 8-)

Kittens are adorable, but, please consider an older cat. They can be great.

Wow, that may have been a lucy break for that cat.

That woman seems like a good soul. The mechanic too!

Hope she adopts the cat!

After a year of fighting with my cat at the front door I finally gave in and started letting her out. She hasn't left the porch yet and its been 14 years. I guess she just wanted to show who was boss.

LOL My new cat kept wanting to go out, too. So, I got him a tag and a collar and I sit on the porch watching him, ten to fifteen minutes a day. All he does is sit on the ground and watch the world go by. I keep urging him to get some exercise as long as we are out there, but he seems disinterested.

I'd worry if my kitties were outdoors - too many things can happen in the great outdoors, city or country life!

A safe cat is an indoor cat !!

My cat Mamalade was an indoor cat, he lived to see his 21st birthday, I would have taken him out bar hopping but *sigh* he was an indoor cat.

Poor kitty was probably scared to death....I'm so glad it will be OK....I hope they investigate a little to see if the kitty had a previous owner before they go ahead with any adoption.....When a kitty wants to go outside they can find a way...They are very quick...

Again, people need to keep their cats indoors. They find trouble wherever they go. They are especially vulnerable at night because they will wander everywhere. They are decimating our native bird populations.

Please, please, please, buy that catbox, put litter in it and keep them indoors. Your vet bills will be less too.

Thankful that kitty survived, I sure hope she adopted him ....

Glad the kitty is alright and that she will adopt otherwise it would not stand a very good chance at the animal control facility!!!

Great story. I love cats so much and feed many that were homeless. It's nice to read a good story.

You must be a night birdie, as you missed the worm. I had one mama cat and four kittens spayed/neutered on Wednesday. Mama cat (she was still a kitten when she had that litter) was wild when she moved her week old babies to my front porch. She is now tame, as are the kittens.

I love birds, too. It's too bad that the audabon society relies on junk science to calculate how many birds are lost to cat predation. I hate that over developement of ugly, sprawled out suburbs has destroyed so much native bird habitat. And the Starlings! Those damned invasive species are taking over. We still have many cardinals in our area, though. They are my favorite city bird. I love it when I see a shy blue bird when out in the country, and on rare occasions, the Painted Bunting. Beautiful.

Same thing with my girlfriend.

First she tried to run me over, then the court gave her papers saying she was the boss of me....

Under the bed, behind the drapes, beneath the truck, I've tried hiding every place I can think of... but then she does the one thing I can't resist

Opens a can of tuna...well, something that SMELLS like tuna...
