Saul Bass was one of the greatest designers of the 20th Century. His iconic posters for Vertigo and The Man With The Golden Arm are some of the most memorable images from cinema history - though he also made film titles (Spartacus, Casino) and advertisements for AT&T and United Airlines, among others.

A new book called "Saul Bass: A Life in Film & Design" by Jennifer Bass and Pat Kirkham (Laurence King, $75) contains more than 1,400 illustrations of his amazing work - and an introduction by long-time Bass admirer Martin Scorsese.

Here are some of Saul Bass' lesser-known, yet equally brilliant designs:

This poster for the film Saint Joan, directed by Otto Preminger, shows a fragmented figure of Joan against a mosaic of vibrant color. It suggests the spirit of a woman broken but not defeated, and is reminiscent of the more famous Preminger/Bass collaborations, Anatomy Of A Murder and The Man With The Golden Arm.
