Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore And Kim Gordon Separate After 27 Years

Sonic Youth Separate

First Posted: 10/15/11 01:24 PM ET Updated: 12/15/11 05:12 AM ET

It's a dark day for Sonic Youth fans.

Bandmates Thurston Moore, 53, and Kim Gordon, 58, have decided to separate about 27 years of marriage, their label, Matador Records, announced in a statement Friday.

But fans of the indie rockers shouldn't give up hope just yet -- both Moore and Gordon are sticking with the band for a little while longer, at least.

"Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment," the label said in a statement, via Us Weekly.

The couple, who married in 1984, reside in Massachusetts and have one daughter, Coco, 17.

Though currently in South America with Sonic Youth, Moore is scheduled to head over to Europe at the end of November for a solo tour to promote his latest album, "Demolished Thoughts."

This broke my heart. I've listened them for close to 6 years now after being introduced to them by my boyfriend. We went on to see them perform Daydream Nation in Chicago a few years ago as our first (and only) trip outside our state together. We were too young to get a hotel room, so we slept at the park and in the afternoon got to hear Thurston warm up. We walked everywhere with just a few dollars in our pocket, a bus ticket, and a map of the city. What a wonderful experience that was.

Thurston and Kim separating really makes me sad. I hope things do work out. Their music is a huge part of my life!

I'm sorry to hear about this. Sonic Youth have enriched my life with their music and live shows and inspired me with their whole approach to making music and defining what music is. The first time I saw them - I was pretty wasted - but I remember being bowled over by the thought that the roar of white noise between their songs contained the potential for all the music that ever has and ever will be created ... Sonic Youth are bold, innovative, challenging, sometimes too much, sometimes not enough, but when they are on-target they are completely sublime.

Thanks, Thurston and Kim. I'm sorry you're going through this now. May it be as painless as possible.

It doesn't make them less awesome. They are one of the few true rock pioneers around.

This is really heartbreaking...here's hoping Gordon and Moore find a way to patch things up...

Moore's latest solo album "Demolished Thoughts" (produced by Beck) that was out a few months ago is one of my favorite albums of the year, and its opening track, the love song "Benediction", might be my #1 favorite song of the year...one of the best love songs I've ever heard:

Clooney shouldn't be on that list. Reporting that he broke up with another actress/model/whatever is like reporting that a dog drank water with its tongue. It'll be news when he decides to marry again.

Daydream Nation on acid was a good thing.
