Cardinals To World Series: St. Louis Defeats Milwaukee Brewers In NLCS

Cardinals Brewers

COLIN FLY   10/17/11 12:56 AM ET   AP

MILWAUKEE — An afterthought in early September, the St. Louis Cardinals are taking their wild ride all the way to the World Series.

David Freese hit a three-run homer in the first and manager Tony La Russa turned again to his brilliant bullpen for seven sturdy innings as St. Louis captured its 18th pennant with a 12-6 victory over the bumbling Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday night.

Albert Pujols and the wild-card Cardinals took out the heavily favored Phillies in the first round, then dispatched the division-rival Brewers on their own turf in Game 6 of the NL championship series.

Looking for its second title in six seasons, St. Louis opens the World Series at home Wednesday night with ace Chris Carpenter on the mound against the AL champion Texas Rangers.

Trailing by 10 1/2 games in the wild-card race on Aug. 25, the Cardinals surged down the stretch and took advantage of a monumental collapse by Atlanta to win a playoff spot on the final night of the regular season.

Now, bolstered by a group of no-name relievers who keep answering La Russa's call, the Cardinals are back in the World Series for the first time since beating Detroit in 2006.

What a relief!

It was a disappointing end to a scintillating season for Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun and the NL Central champion Brewers, who finished with a franchise-record 96 wins, six games ahead of St. Louis.

Baseball's best home team collapsed in the NLCS, though, losing twice at Miller Park in an error-filled flop. It was likely Fielder's final game with the Brewers, too. He's a free agent after the season.

Rafael Furcal and Pujols hit solo homers off Chris Narveson and St. Louis built a 9-4 lead by the time the bullpen took over for Edwin Jackson in the third inning.

The group of Fernando Salas, Marc Rzepczynski, Octavio Dotel, Lance Lynn and Jason Motte allowed two runs the rest of the way. For the series, St. Louis relievers finished 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA over 28 2-3 innings.

The biggest scare came when Pujols appeared shaken up after tagging out Braun in the fifth inning when he fell hard on his right forearm on a close play at first base. The three-time MVP was slow to get up, but stayed in the game.

I'm going for the Rangers - but may the best team win! Then, I'll just wait for pitchers and catchers to report for spring training 2012!

As a fan of the NL, I have to hope the Cards win the Series. As a Cubs fan, I have to hope that beer prices don't go up again. Go Cards. Yay.

The team with the most ex-Cubs LOSES the World Series - really!

Rangers: NONE
Note: The Rangers’ Josh Hamilton was selected by the Cubs (picking for the Cincinnati Reds) in the Rule 5 Draft. He made his MLB debut in 2007 with the Reds.

Cardinals:
Ryan Theriot (5) .271, 1 HR, 47 RBI, Corey Patterson (6) .239, 6 HR, 36 RBI
Note: Kyle Lohse was a Cubs farmhand traded by Ed Lynch to the Twins in 1999 for Rick Aguilera.

Best of luck to the Cardinals, but that's as far as they go, HA!

OK....

How proud you are of your organization. And yes, that's a collective "you" for the team and the fans. It's the way fans talk.

By the way, Corey Patterson isn't on the postseason roster.

Seriously, the Cub Factor is the real deal. I think the only time it worked against the opposition was when the Diamondbacks beat the Yankees.

Why must everyone take this so seriously???? The Cub Factor is real, and should the north side team ever win a WS, armaggedon is soon to follow.

I didn't make this stuff up.

Ok, as a vitriolic Cub fan, I will give you Jack. Met him a few times when I worked at Wrigley.

Great guy, very funny. His is a voice that can never be replaced, like a Vin Scully or even Harry Caray.

*sigh* Today's voices just don't cut it for me....

You're right. When MacGwire broke the home run record (before we all knew about the steroids), Jack Buck was not only speechless, a TV camera showed him standing in the booth with tears running down his face. He was great. Did you know Harry Caray worked with him in St. Louis in the early 60s? I remember hiding under the covers with a transistor radio listening to them at night. When the Cards were on TV, we turned it down and listened to the radio. When Harry moved to Chicago, they would always go to the other's booth and have fun. Classy guys!

The World Series is a misnomer as not one other team from any other country in the world ever is included in this contest. What world? This is the United States baseball playoff, that is all. Also these baseball workers are a bunch of pansies who can't work in the rain. Oh, oh I just felt a drop of rain so I have to go home to my mom. I can't risk my multi million dollar a year income by getting wet or hurt if I step in a mud puddle. Man up and work like football players. Pathetic.

Every year I participate in the World Playoffs of cromulanting and I am always the champion of the world. I am also the only person playing so I win by default. Same with the SMALL WORLD SERIES as it should be named.

Wow. Actually, the Blue Jays have been in the WS. And they play in another country.

Me, I don't understand coming to a baseball thread to express your dislike of the sport. Why bother?

I'm not interested in football, so I don't waste time on those articles and I certainly would never respond to one. Even if I do believe the old definition of football as the most American of sports: a series of random acts of violence interspersed with committee meetings.

Wouldn't have had to, had they stayed out of the bars. When will athletes start realizing that they get those huge salaries for staying and keeping themselves in optimum condition. So, in actuallity, they didn't want to win.

It largely isn't even relevant to Fox since the relative ratings compared to the rest of their prime time schedule mean that they can still charge advertisers top dollar.

Cards = Best team and have the best fans.

Haters gonna hate.

NYC = almost 20 million metro population - season attendance = 3.6 million
Philly = 15 ish million metro population - season attendance = 3.5 million
St. Louis 2.5 million metro population - season attendance = 3 million

Numbers dont lie.

Brewers put up 3.1M fans this year..... Milwaukee is at 953,000 population... so where does that put the Brewers fan base?
02:49 PM on 10/17/2011
I guess that puts you somewhere below St. Louis.
According to MLB records from 2000-2010 the Brewers had 26.3 million fans attend.
The St. Louis Cardinals had just under 36 million. Good try Kevin. Go CARDS! Beat Texas!

Also, the Cards outscored the Rams on Sunday. That would have been a fun Vegas bet.

A big part of this was that Milwaukee wasn't able to tighten up their defense for the postseason, and St. Louis was.

Milwaukee did themselves in with 12 errors in their 11 post-season games. They were among the worst defensive teams during the regular season (22 out of 30, per MLB's rankings http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/team/_/stat/fielding/seasontype/2), and they weren't able to right the ship for the postseason.

Conversely, St. Louis had even worse team defense in the regular season (27 out of 30) but made only 4 errors in their 11 postseason games.

Texas, by the way, ranks 24 in team defense. They and St. Louis combined for a whopping 230 regular-season errors this year. I wonder, When was the last time the two World Series teams combined for that many errors?

Interesting also to note that the teams who ranked 1,2, and 6 -- Tampa, Philly, and Arizona, respectively -- are all home raking leaves at this point.

Hello, I must be going.
12:47 PM on 10/17/2011
I live near St. Louis, I don't really follow baseball, but the Cards are my team if I do.

So call me a fair weather fan, I am OK with it.

And since I do detest the Yankees, I can certainly understand why so many others dislike the Cards.

But as someone more or less looking from the outside in, I must say, the Cards do best when they fall apart int he middle of the season and come on strong at the end. And maybe that is true of every team, but the Playoffs are a good time to be hitting on all cylinders.
