Democrats Planning Major Capitol Hill Rally To Push Obama's Jobs Bill

Congressional Democrats

First Posted: 10/17/11 05:16 PM ET Updated: 10/17/11 06:02 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- Hoping to put political pressure on Republicans and provide a few sympathetic visuals for reporters, congressional Democrats are planning to host a rally on Capitol Hill this week to push a major component of President Barack Obama's jobs plan.

A Democratic source says that on Wednesday, the party is likely to host firefighters, cops and other first responders along with teachers who face the threat of being laid off should lawmakers not send additional funds to states. Another source confirmed that preparations are underway for a rally.

The purpose of the affair is straightforward. It aims to put a human face on a legislative effort that would see $30 billion or so spent on education-related jobs and another $5 billion on first responders, all of which would be paid for by placing a tax on income above $1 million. By bringing those individuals who stand to benefit from the bill to Washington D.C., Democrats are practically doing the national press corps' homework for them.

The extent to which the White House will be involved in the affair remains unclear. But the administration does see the contrast drawn by both the bill and the rally as an advantageous one for the president.

"There is no perfect science to starting on teachers, firefighters, and cops," an administration official said of the decision to make that component of the American Jobs Act the first to receive a vote separate from the whole package. "First off, it is very important to get done. But also, if the Republicans want to oppose this, it crystallizes who they are fighting against."

Whether that crystallization will change the whip count remains to be seen. On Monday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said he would hold a vote on the bill within the next few days, arguing that its passage was necessary to keep 400,000 teachers and first responders on the job.

“I am happy to keep the Senate in session as long as needed to make sure we get a vote on this jobs bill," said the Majority Leader during a press call on Monday.

Minutes later, however, the office of House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) responded with little evidence that the GOP would budge.

"Will the President at some point explain the endgame to this economic strategy?" emailed Press Secretary Brendan Buck, noting that the president had already asked for and received billions of dollars in direct aid to states several times during his presidency. "Or can we simply expect the President to be asking for another big check next year as well? Maybe it’s time we try an approach focused on putting folks back to work for the long haul."

Democrats talk a good game about supporting working Americans, but when it comes to action, they don't.

Last week, Democrats (including Nancy Pelosi) voted to approve the American job-killing, manufacturing outsourcing free trade agreements with S. Korea, Panama and  Read More... :

The Senate approved free-trade deals between the U.S. and Colombia, Panama and South Korea on Wednesday, sending them to President Barack Obama for signature. The agreements are strongly backed by the White House and won approval in the House of Representatives earlier Wednesday. The Senate voted 66-33 on the Colombia agreement; 77-22 on the Panama deal; and 83-15 on the South Korea agreement.

How did your senators and representatives vote?

"Will the President at some point explain the endgame of this economic strategy?"

JOBS. KEEPING JOBS. PROMOTING JOB GROWTH.

It's a JOBS BILL. Are you dense??? Good gawd, if the GOP would actually CONTRIBUTE to this conversation instead of asking ridiculous questions like that, we'd actually be going somewhere.

It is so simple, as the President has said, that the republicans cannot grasp the theory......working people buy stuff and pay taxes......very hard concept.

Explain to me what happened to the first stimulus that was supposed to create jobs in infrastructure, provide money to hire new cops, teachers and create more jobs in the private sector? It went to big unions and cronies who contributed to the Pres. campaign and to the Dems. running for office....................

In February of 2009, congress passed and Obama signed the first stimulus act, which contained $54B in funding for 'State Fiscal Stabilization,' $39.5B of which went to teachers. It also included $46B in infrastructure spending and $3.5B for local law enforcement. We were promised the unemployment rate wouldn't go above 8%, the real unemployment rate is near 20%.

Even though liberals have stated that economists believe spending is the right thing to do, this ad featured in the New York Times and WSJ of the signatures of over 200 economists, paid for by Cato, says otherwise:

http://WWW.Cato.org/special/stimulus09/cato_stimulus.pdf

Then in late 2009-2010 we have the HIRE Act, passed by the Dem controlled legislature and signed by Obama to 'help mainstreet.' If you have forgotten the HIRE Act, that's ok, it didn't do anything either, except add $56B to the deficit by 2016.

In March 2010, before the GOP shellacked the Dems in the mid-terms, Tom Harkin (d) introduced the $26B teacher bailout bill that was so unpopular given all the spending democrats were doing that it was shelved by the democrats.

Nevermind the cash for clunkers that was supposed to create jobs. Nevermind the Solyndras and all the crony, venture capitalism that is simply pissing money away. What we have learned is that government spending doesn't create jobs, and that stimulus-lite will do nothing either.

Insanity--doing the same thing over and expecting different results.

The fact that Solyndra failed is unfortunate for their business and our economy, but I'm sure that there have been failures in both China and Germany in their attempts to be a dominant player in green technologies. The difference is that China is investing billions in solar technology. If we fail to move forward in developing these technologies we will not only fall behind in these technologies, but our ability to compete in many other businesses, especially manufacturing, will be further undercut. China and Germany's business will be paying far less for energy costs to run factories, infrastructure projects and other businesses and we will be remain reliant on the dirtier and more expensive fossil fuels. To ignore the benefits of green technology is not only bad for this country, it is bad for business and our ability to compete in the world economy.

Solar power is not a new technology; it has been around for over 100 years and cannot even come close to chipping away at the effeciency and effectiveness of fossil fuels. How can you honestly say that alternative energy is cheaper than fossil fuels when there is not one shred of evidence to support this theory? Regarding your points:

1: Sorry. It has been widely reported by all of the news outlets that the Bush administration ultimately chose not to guarantee any loans to Solyndra. Hence the reason they weren't guaranteed.

2. "Such technical due-diligence requires substantial time and effort by experienced engineers to collect and analyze comparative and seasonal performance data."

A couple things: 1: engineers do not evaluate seasonal performance data; that is evaluated by accountants and auditors. 2. all that was needed was the audit report from PwC, which stated that "they have serious doubts about Solyndra's ability to continue as a going concern. Further, OMB raised an issue with the loans. This should have been proof enough.

3. If this was a "phony scanda," why did a federal judge authorise the FBI to raid the exexec's homes and offices? Further, how can you not consider the rewriting of the loan guarantee to ensure that Solyndra investors and Obama donors were to be paid first in case of bankruptcy over taxpayers, violating federal law?

Defending Solyndra and the government's crony, venture capitalsm is a futile task. Company's should rise and fall on their own merit.

cont:1) The Solendra loan timeline provided in the editorial, “Bush Administration Advanced Solyndra Loan Guarantee for Two Years, Media Blow the Story” http://tinyurl.com/63f3at9 Published in Climate Progress, which New York Times columnist Tom Friedman called "the indispensable blog" and Time magazine named one of the 25 “Best Blogs of 2010.″ http://thinkprogress.org/author/Joe

2) Only the technically illiterate could believe that President Obama, who is a lawyer and politician, or any of his administrative staff, actually performed a technical evaluation of the Solendra technology. Such technical due-diligence requires substantial time and effort by experienced engineers to collect and analyze comparative and seasonal performance data. In fact, such studies are the responsibility of the DOE, which it routinely performs as part of the DOE mission.

http://tinyurl.com/43vzbem

3) Has anyone noticed that only members of the party of Dumb and Dumber aka right-wing Republicans (rwGOP) instigated and are investigating this phony scandal; and yet these rwGOP members are not engineers, and they are dedicated, not to identifying innovative technology, but instead, as asserted by Senator Mitch McConnell, to undermining the Obama Administration?
Isn’t anyone curious why these rwGOP members, who are too ignorant and incompetent to even work as effective legislators, are evaluating whether this loan guarantee was appropriate? These rwGOP members aren’t engineers or scientists, and it’s doubtful they even understand elementary high-school Physics, let alone complex technology involving thin-film and photovoltaics.

Wrong, look up in congress.org................The Bush Adm. stopped the loan to Solyndra, because further investigation showed that the company would be bankrupt by Sept. 2011. Obama came into office, and in Feb 2009 started the process for the loan back up, even though it was recommended that the company was in financial trouble, and it was not adviseble to continue ..

I believe that the American worker is tired of being a debating point or a dot on a graph. The time has come that solutions are necessary and not rhetoric.Spending does create jobs, jobs increase demand, and demand increases the overall economy. These are pretty simple concepts to grasp.Another simple concept is that 50% of people reporting income to the IRS made only 13%of total reported income while 1% made vover 20% of reported income.Where should the money come from to pay for this spending. These simple truths should be an easy concept to grasp even for the simple minds of our Teapublican representatives and their spin doctors. They sell dumb call it Freedumb and now the majority have quit buying it.
09:36 PM on 10/21/2011
20% plus 13% equals 33%. Why shouldn't the other 67% pay some sort of tax..... Fair is fair!!!!! Right Liberal?????????????????????

You know you have injured the left when your comment has been removed for no reason other than disagreeing with their view of the world. When they comment on Palin, all manner of vile, vulgar and sexist comment is permitted. When they comment on Cain, all manner of racial stereotyping is permitted. When they speak of Romney and Perry, heresy and blasphemy are the order of the day.
Just don't disagree with anything that is sacred to liberals. Sacred to a liberal is anything that diminishes your Constitutional rights

NOTO BENE;  The Dems aren't backing the protesters (there's nothing wrong with a political system that makes them rich), they're backing Obama's jobs plan (and we all know how well that worked.)

Until they admit the 99%ers have a legitmate complaint and politicians got rich creating it, we still have the same problem.

The Democrats don't want to change the system, they just want us to shut up because we prove they're nothing more than greedy hypocrites..

There are other voting strategies that are just as valid; like voting out all incumbents.  Newbies are always scared, and tend to lock up the political profiteering for a while.  I won't reward the Dems for betraying me (I'm a longtime Indy); I'll send them home and pester the newbies, and try to lock up the process until we get someone with ethics in.

Rahm knew Obama needed Indies to win in 2008; and they did it (largest consistent voting block in the country.)  In 2010, Rahm abandoned him after warning him repeatedly he was losing them.  I won't reward them because 'they're the only game in town' or 'the other guys are worse!'; I'll vote them out and hope for a locked Congress, and wait for better (more scared) candidates.

My neighbors (who were Dems in 2008 and voted O) are beginning to reregister as Indies.  These 'parties' are not going to change; they make more money selling legislation than they do from us; all we're getting is lip service.  If we want a party for 99%ers, we have to make it clear that betrayal is not rewarded, and create our own.

Obama could have created a new world; but he chose to sell us out.  We'll vote him out and hope for a locked Congress.

So now, the democrats want to stage a rally to "push" Obama's jobs act? There is not a single democrat willing to co-sign this bill because it's a campaign prop, not a credible bill to create lasting jobs.

Everyone knows this is a wealth redistribution scheme designed to take more from the "rich" and funnel $$ to the government union employees, who will in turn pay dues which will come back to the democrat coffers in campaign donations.

I don't know about you, but I'm sick and tired of these games while so many Americans suffer through this failed president's failed economy. No more years!

Will all those on the right, who are interested in seeing this 1% grow wealthier while they stagnate please raise your hand. Just as I thought. You are not interested the the wealth of the 1%, you are looking to get your own. So why are Democrats so obessed with bringing others down to their level instead of trying to reach the other level? Is it possible that they are all just a bunch of lazy people, obsessed with the idea of never having to earn, just take?

I'm a diehard Dem. for the moment. And I worked 46 years. Sometimes 2 and 3 jobs. I married a millionaire a few months ago and am now in the top 2% in this country. And even though Republicans are working for people like me. I still know they're "full of it"...And they have done NOTHING for average working Americans except extend the Bush tax cuts and pass that off as helping the Job Creators. Who are creating jobs overseas.
