WASHINGTON -- As a latecomer to the 2012 presidential race, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) has a lot of ground to cover -- and he's covering it in private jets.
Forms filed Saturday with the Federal Election Commission reveal that Perry's campaign spent $276,424.03 on private chartered jets during just six weeks from the August 13 launch of his campaign to the end of September.
That figure is nearly nine times the $33,657.25 his campaign spent on commercial air travel during the same period.
The sum also dwarfs the private jet spending of GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney, who reported $135,083 in private jet expenses during the three months ending September 30. Another high-flyer, Michele Bachmann, spent over $130,000 with D.C.-area based Moby Dick Airways, Ltd.
Perry has positioned himself as a belt-tightening fiscal conservative, and in his 2010 book Fed Up! he railed against lawmakers who "see no problem with spending other people's money."
The spending underscores how much traveling Perry has done while attempting to make up for his late entry into the GOP race. But its also consistent with the luxurious lifestyle spending that has gotten Perry in hot water before. Since 2007, state taxpayers have paid rent totaling nearly $600,000 on a five-bedroom mansion the Perry family has lived in while the official governor's mansion undergoes renovations. This figure included $1,000 for draperies from Neiman Marcus.
The bulk of Perry's private jet spending has gone to a jet rental brokerage company called Air Charter Team, which received $140,288 less than a week after Perry announced his campaign. The company's homepage reads, "Looking for luxury? We know VIP airliners." The other five companies Perry's campaign paid jet fees to are Sun Air Jets, Reynolds Jet Management, Friedkin Aviation, Aspect Aviation, and Goldsmith Team LLC, a jet rental company. The fees range from $19,637 all the way up to Air Charter Team's fee.
Jet charter brokers do not actually own the jets they broker, but instead monitor the complicated movements of independent jet operators in and out of airports across the country. Clients can call up and relay their travel needs and companies like Air Charter Team will offer them a range of options, for which customers pay with travel credits. It is unclear how many of his credits Perry has used up, and a spokesman for the Perry campaign declined to comment on the jet expenses.
This isn't the first time that Perry's private jet fees have exceeded the norm. In 2006, his campaign racked up nearly $90,000 for private jets Perry used during his reelection bid, according to Texas Ethics Commission campaign finance reports.

In the beginning of Rick Perry's political career, he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1984. As a freshman, he joined other fiscal conservatives in the "pit bulls," named after where they sat in the lower pit of the House Appropriations Committee.
During the 1988 presidential primaries, he supported the candidacy of fellow Southern Democrat Al Gore and worked on his Texas campaign.
Perry ended up voting for George H.W. Bush that year and, in 1989, he switched parties to become a Republican.
Despite his party change, Perry has never lost an election, a record that goes back to elementary school.
Following his three terms in the Texas House. Perry was elected Texas Agriculture Commissioner in 1990 and was re-elected in 1994. His background as the son of a cotton farmer and an animal science major at Texas A&M University undoubtedly helped his campaign.
In 1998, Perry was elected as Lieutenant Governor of Texas. It was during this race that he had a falling out with GOP strategist Karl Rove which led to a reported rivalry with the George W. Bush camp.
When Bush won the presidency in 2000, Perry ascended to become governor in December 2000. He has been re-elected to the position three times since, making him the longest continually-serving governor in the nation.
Correction: An earlier version of this caption incorrectly stated that Perry was the chairman of Gore's Texas campaign.

He's a fiscal conservative who called on lawmakers to make up a budget shortfall in the tens of billions by living within our means. Yet, he's charging taxpayers $10,000 a month for a 6,386-square-foot rental mansion in the West Austin hills with seven baths and $1,000 Neiman Marcus window coverings.
Not so charitable
The good Christian governor wears his faith like a campaign bumper sticker, and makes headlines with events like the upcoming prayer-a-palooza at Reliant. But when it comes to putting his money where his mouth is? The Chronicle's Gary Scharrer reported recently that, of the $2.68 million he's earned since he became governor, only a half of a percent went to churches and religious organizations.
He's Fed Up with the federal government, and even wrote a book saying so. Texas can take care of itself, he says. He wants Washington out of his life, he says. Unless of course, he needs it. Like in the case of a wild fire, or when his political ambitions have grown too big for even Texas.
The subtitle of Perry's recent book is Our Fight to Save America from Washington. If Perry gets in, it'll be up to those of us who know him to save Washington from Perry.
Democracy is politics where all people excerise equal control (in our case through representatives) over the matters that affect their interests. Republicans, Perry and all the others, practice Kleptocracy. It means "rule by thieves". They won't to tell you who's in control. Send a "donation" though and you could be one of them. I'll stay Democratic!

Perry is throwing the party of his lifetime and only his friends and family are invited. Speaking of invitations he is giving Herman Cain an honored guest invite to his hunting ranch the day they remove the paint from the stone. They will also supply him with a glow in the dark vest, and ask him to run as fast as he can.

Perry likes to live the good life and doesn't cut corners when it comes to his comfort and enjoyment of life. Nothing wrong with that except it comes at the expense of the Texas taxpayers. However, when Perry considers these same taxpayers and our needs, he is a true fiscal conservative. Do as I say, not as I do.

When was the last time any of the contenders for the GOP nomination actually had to use or chose to use public transportation? Sixty years ago, most towns in the United States were served by a variety of public transportation types--passenger trains, inter-urbans, buses and trolleys made it possible for GramAbeMartin to regularly visit her kin in Huntsville, AL or Benton Harbor, MI, or Dayton, IN. And though she lived until 96, she never found it necessary to drive and was proud of her independence and freedom of movement.
The pleasure of travel in this country has evaporated as the infrastructure has deteriorated. While most cities of size do have bus systems, few except for the metropolises of New York and Chicago, have riders who do not own cars. A few leaders, such as NYC Michael Bloomberg, eschew the limo or large SUV and go to City Hall on the Subway. Vice President Biden, as U.S. Senator was a regular passenger on AMTRAK, on which he relied to go to his Wilmington home after finishing work in the Beltway.
But this crew has no concept of the rigors of public transportation. They don't stand in endless TSA screening lines at the air ports; they fly in and out of boutique terminals where screening is accomplished in minutes. They don't sit outside in all weather waiting the for the number 37 bus to make its hourly visit. They don't miss work if the number 37 bus breaks down or gets caught in traffic.
Perry milks all of the government perks he can and no doubt his rich, rich Oil Corridor backers will be subsidizing his need for five star hotels and leather chairs in Gulfstream V's through super-PACs or thick cash envelopes. But he is hardly alone among the candidates.
There is no similarity between Romney, Perry, Bachmann, Cain, Gingrich and those they seek to lead.
