Rooney Mara Covers Vogue's November Issue In Dragon Dress (PHOTOS)

Just as we suspected (we have our sources), Vogue's November cover girl is Rooney Mara, star of the highly anticipated "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."

Tonne Goodman did the styling honors, cleverly putting Mara in a Ralph Lauren dress with a beaded dragon up the back. And while we can say the actress looks gorgeous with her slender figure, it doesn't feel quite right... given what she's had to do to get it.

Writes Jonathan Van Meter for Vogue:

When a waiter appears to take our order, we are all looking at our menus, but I see out of the corner of my eye Fincher nudging Mara. He says with quiet seriousness, "You can eat." I look up to see her reaction. Mara rolls her eyes, and Fincher laughs. "You can have lettuce and a grape. A raisin if you must." She orders a piece of fish and barely touches it. In the book, Salander is described as boyish and awkward, "a pale, anorexic young woman who has hair as short as a fuse..." Noomi Rapace, the magnetic star of the Swedish versions, looked more like Joan Jett.

"One of the things that make our version that much more heartbreaking," says Mara, "is that even though I am playing a 24-year-old, I look much younger. I look like a child." I ask if she had to get unhealthily skinny for the role. She says, "Umm . . . not really."

"It hasn't been too hard for her," Fincher quickly adds.

The result, Van Meter writes, is Mara's total transformation to become Lisbeth Salander, the heroine of the Swedish novel on which the movie's based:

As Fincher talks about the film, his heroine, Mara -- with Salander's awesomely strange hair, bleached eyebrows, and facial piercings -- sits next to him, looking for all the world like a troubled college student who takes too much Adderall.

Troubled college student or high-fashion model, as that's exactly what Mara looks like in the photo shoot, lensed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

The shoot, ultra-skinniness notwithstanding, is lovely, a far cry from the edgy punk-rock image of Rooney on the leaked film poster.

I can only see Noomi as Lisbeth now and Mikael Nyqvist as Mikael Bloomvist. I don't know why thy always have to remake great European movies, I think that they feel the average North American viewer can't handle subtitles when in actuality seeing the movie in the language the novel was written in adds to the atmosphere and draws you in.

I saw the trailer for this version and I was just frustrated. Everything has to be slicked up for hollywood and Mr James Bond for the passionate journalist? Urgh.

She doesn't seem to look any skinnier than anyone else we see in these magazines...wait, maybe that's the problem. I think she looks great in these pictures, except the first one, where she looks like a corpse. I'm looking forward to seeing her in this movie. Noomie Rapace was a great Lisbeth, but didnt look the way I "Lisbeth" would.

She's very lovely, but I'm gonna miss Noomi.

Don't we all wish we could all be so stunning? But the background story makes me feel blessed to have a man who loves every 135 lbs. of me. This entire photo thing is fantasy. But she IS--air brushed or not-- absorlutely gorgeous.

When a woman gets "unhealthy" thin for a movie, it's called anorexic. When a man does it, it's called "getting into character."

She's haunting in the movie, and beautiful in an off beat way in reality.

She doesn't look that skinny in these photos. Girlfriend is going to rock this movie. I can't wait.

Maybe they'll let her put some of the weight back on for the second movie? (I won't say more because spoilers.) I really want her to eat more than lettuce and a raisin and a bite of fish. I'd like to give her a cookie or something. Maybe some cake. And a HotPocket.
