Obama Administration Sets Deportation Record

Immigrants Deported From Usa

First Posted: 10/18/11 03:23 PM ET Updated: 12/18/11 05:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration set a new record for deportations, removing nearly 400,000 undocumented immigrants in the last fiscal year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced on Tuesday.

The agency removed 396,906 undocumented immigrants from the United States in the 2011 fiscal year, a slight increase from the previous year's 392,826 removals. Administration officials said the increase is the result of a continued focus on policing undocumented immigration, a rebuttal to claims by GOP presidential candidates and others who say the president has been too soft on unauthorized immigration.

"Smart and effective immigration enforcement relies on setting priorities for removal and executing on those priorities," ICE Director John Morton said in a statement. "These year-end totals indicate that we are making progress, with more convicted criminals, recent border crossers, egregious immigration law violators and immigration fugitives being removed from the country than ever before."

President Barack Obama faces a difficult balance on immigration as the 2012 presidential campaign heats up. Most Republicans criticize him for doing too little to eliminate unauthorized immigration, and have taken action to block the Obama administration from using prosecutorial discretion to focus on some undocumented immigrants rather than others.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), the top Republican on the House committee overseeing immigration, announced a bill in June that would block the president from using his executive powers to halt any deportations -- even though Obama has said repeatedly he would not do so.

At the same time, prominent immigration advocates argue Obama's deportation policies could drive away Latino voters, who largely support paths to citizenship for the some 11.2 million unauthorized immigrants who are already in the country.

In August, senior administration officials tried to appease critics on the left by announcing a new deportation policy that would take family and community ties of undocumented immigrants into account when determining whether they should be removed from the United States.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said after the announcement that the agency would continue to deport a consistent number of unauthorized immigrants, but the deportation figures would include a larger number of immigrants who have committed serious crimes.

"The numbers are going to be very robust in terms of numbers of removal -- we don't fool around about this," Napolitano said on Aug. 30 at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast. "Our border enforcement is second to none."

The 2011 figures show slightly more undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes were deported last year than in the prior year. ICE reported that 216,698 of the unauthorized immigrants removed in the 2011 fiscal year were convicted of felonies or misdemeanors, making up about 55 percent of the total removals. In the 2010 fiscal year, the 195,772 undocumented immigrants who had been charged with crimes -- almost 50 percent of the total removal figure -- were deported.

Former President George W. Bush deported about 30,000 fewer undocumented immigrants -- 369,221 -- in his final year in office.

The percentage of immigrants removed who were convicted of crimes has been rising since 2007, according to figures from ICE. In 2007, about 35 percent of those deported were convicted of crimes.

"What you're seeing each year is a bettering of what they're targeting and their own prioritization, in terms of their removals," said Michelle Mittelstadt of Migration Policy Institute, a think tank that tracks immigration. "Increasingly a larger share of overall removals are people who have felony or misdemeanor records. You've seen a steady uptick since 2007."

Frank Sharry, founder and executive director of pro-immigration reform organization America's Voice, said the Obama administration moved in the right direction by announcing a new deportation policy in August. But he said touting increased deportation numbers could conflict with the Obama administration's messaging on its new deportation policy.

"They are dithering on implementing the new policy, bragging about how many people they are deporting and spinning that they are focusing on the worst of the worst," he said. "If they do the same thing next year and make a similar announcement just weeks before the election they will end up suppressing the Latino vote and threatening the President's reelection. "

So far, the administration seems likely to continue to push for nearly 400,000 deportations per year, which enforcement officials say is the most they can remove under current funding levels. If Congress wants to see more deportations, Morton and Napolitano have said it should increase funding to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Napolitano said in August, "Congress should look at numbers if they want more deportations."

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Frank Sharry was referencing an increase in deportations of undocumented immigrants with criminal records as a step in the right direction, when in fact he was referring to a new deportation policy announced by the Obama administration in August. The initial version also incorrectly stated due to an editing error that there are some 11.2 undocumented immigrants in the U.S., now corrected to some 11.2 million.

All will vote independent. Keep displaying that herd mentality. All hispanics care about is bringing all of Mexico over to America. Hispanics showed their agenda way too early with that Cinco De Mayo national march protest a few years back. You scared the heck of the white people, who vowed to make them pay. So, all of the sudden, Whites were out mowing their own lawns, cleaning their own toilets, etc.

The problem with Hispanics is they have that herd mentality. They all vote the same, which means it is so easy to dupe them. Once you have a few, you actually have them all. So, they are abandoning the democratic party. That's biting the very hand that feeds you. What loyalty. Then their feelings get hurt when the GOP refer to the illegal aliens as "Illegals".

That is what happens whenever you try to blend-in with the caucasians. They don't respect you. I will never understand a poor: black, hispanic, white republican.

Latinos are taking over !!! Soon, we will become Mexico.

I love chips, and salsa, Texas breakfast burritos hold the chorizo, with extra, bacon, potato, eggs, and cheese on the authentic roasted flour tortilla.

However, I refuse to learn Spanish, or press # 2 for on my phone for Spanish. The is my country, english is spoken here. I will not bow down to worship images of the "Virgin' Mary."

Most of these deportations are due to the amazingly successful Secure Communities program. When someone is booked in jail, their fingerprints are run through immigration databases and if they are here illegally they are set aside for deportation. Pretty simple program really.

Obama's illegal immigrant Aunt and Uncle get to stay in the U.S. while Hispanics are deported and Obama officials gloat about it ,,,"The numbers are going to be very robust in terms of numbers of removal -- we don't fool around about this," Napolitano said,,,

If Obama thinks he will get the Hispanic vote again to get re-elected he is dillusional. Those of us that voted for him wont make that mistake again.

His actions, not speeches have determined this.

Republican? Herman Cain the racist? No thanks. They are as bad as Obama (at least they dont pander).

The consensus is that many Hispanics will vote for an Independent candidate. We will reward neither party and they will realize that without the Hispanic vote, they will be out of office.

If Obama did everything you wanted, Republicans would still tear him down cause this is about GREED/POWER by the (R) party------just like it was for Hkaddafi!

And by many guesstimates it's a drop in the bucket. 300K enter or stay illegally (it's impossible to track for obvious reasons) and there are anywhere from 12 million to 20 million already here. So at this rate in 120 years we might solve the illegal immigrant issue.

What's wrong with the electric fence?

Why do a certain group of people feel it is OK to continue to come over illegally, steal, have an achor baby so it would seem inhumane to deport them all?

America's greed got you into this mess.

1st: obtaining, stealing slaves from Africa
2nd: new slavery - illegal immigrants - Mitt Romney, and granting in-state tuition "Rick Perry".

Now, the power is shifting to Latinos, who brag about taking over.

Let us all come together, hold hands and pray to God that our President continues to enforce the laws of our nation by repatriating all foreign nationals who have over-stayed their visas or snuck into the country illegally. America is OVERPOPULATED with uneducated beasts of burden - it is time to thin the herd!

Frontline just aired an excellent program about this very topic. It very informative and rises above the redneck, 'let's kick em all out' rhetoric, and gets to the bottom of it. Obama promised reform. If he doesn't get the latino vote in 2012, he probably won't win. It's not that they'll vote republican. They're smarter than that. The problem is a good majority might not come out to vote and his inaction on this very issue is a big reason why.

Anyways, if you haven't seen it and care about the issue, check it out. It's appropriately titled 'Lost in Detention'. We really have mastered the art of making money from sticking people in jail. Or at least someone in this country has. Privitizing detention facilities....capitalism at its finest.

Not every illegal is Hispanic, a lot of them are Asian too. It's really a lot of Asians in Hawaii and the West Coast, from Seattle to San Fran. Plenty of those guys are in gangs and dealing drugs too, just like Hispanics, hope some are getting cleared out now. Thanks Obama, we needed to clear out some trash.

Comprehensive Immigration Supporters: Answer this for me. Tell me why millions of Americans should have to suffer unemployment while millions of illegals have jobs.
As a result, of America’s failure to control its borders, millions of illegals are working here in America & yet millions of Americans are on food stamps. Supporters like Rep Grijalva, & even Lawrence O’Donnell keep trying to push this notion that the American People SHOULD support a Comp Plan, which is Amnesty with hoops. We should do so, because it’s the humane thing to do. You know, you may very well be right, but that isn’t the point.
Americans are suffering through a deluge of hardships. They’ve seen their pensions devastated; their jobs shipped overseas; their houses foreclosed on; & a government unwilling to help. If that isn’t bad enough now YOU want them to sit by & watch illegal aliens (20 Million) sneak into or remain in the country as they take millions of jobs. If they were doing work that Americans could not fine, but they get these jobs mostly due to their willingness to work for wages that are according to the HHS Poverty Guidelines well below the poverty line (family of 4: $22,350). If believing that the basic needs of Americans should be satisfied before any needs of illegal aliens, labels me inhumane, then so be it!
Just know that the basic needs of Americans should be put before those of non-Americans.

Bush 43 averaged one million apprehensions per year at the border. Obama has averaged 500,000 in his first two years.
So if you let an extra half a million illegals walk into the country and then remove 200,000 more than the last guy, you still end up with a net gain for 300,000 illegals per year above the growth that we saw under Bush.

The largest surge inn illegal immigration from Mexico occurred between 1995-2003 (Clinton and GW Bush) it's declined every year since, and is now at a record 40 year low.

source San Diego Union Tribune "Illegal immigration at 40 year low" www.uniontrib.com
So the surge happened between 8-15 years ago. Where were you then, asleep ? Obama has deported 1,000 + per day for 2 1/2 years (one every 67 seconds) a record number of deportations, and a record low number of illegal entries.

Unemployment in Mexico is ~5-6%. The only reason that might keep them here is the Drug violence.
