Randy Hopper, Former Wisconsin State Senator Arrested For Drunk Driving: 'Don't Ever Run For Office'

Randy Hopper, the recalled Wisconsin state senator who was arrested earlier this week for drunk driving, had some words of advice for the officer who booked him, according to a new report from the Green Bay Press Gazzette.

Hopper was ousted from his Fon du Lac state senate seat in August, when Democratic recall challenger Jessica King defeated him with 51 percent of the vote. On Sunday, he was was arrested in a grocery store parking lot for drunk driving after failing a field sobriety test. His blood alcohol content was later measured at .13 percent, .05 percent over the .08 legal limit.

Complainants said they had witnessed him almost cause a head-on collision before entering the parking lot, according to the Gazzette. Earlier reports said observers had called the police with concerns of a black Suburban "all over the road."

Once in the police cruiser, Hopper spoke with the arresting officer, Deputy Nicholas Venne, and seemed to suggest that he had been targeted because he was a politician.

“Don’t ever run for office, by the way,” Hopper said, according to the Gazzette. “Because if you did, someone like this guy (complainant) will call you in. ... They told me I was the devil earlier, too. I am not that.”

Hopper later denied having done "anything illegal."

Valerie Cass, Hopper's girlfriend, who sparked controversy during his campaign following news that he had moved in with her, leaving both his wife and his district behind, was also reportedly in the car during the incident.

According to the Gazzette, Cass yelled at the family who had called in the complaint and tried to take their picture.

Hopper is due in court on November 7 for charges of drunken driving and another traffic offense. The Gazzette reports that Hopper could be fined up to $1,030.60 for the charges.
