He may be one of the most iconic figures in science fiction history, but William Shatner seems to have a healthy respect for the genre's roots. Either that, or he had a wild fever dream while trying to come up for a music video for his recording of "Bohemian Rhapsody."
Captain Kirk takes on the Queen classic in his trademark droll, which is bizarre enough given the emotion with which front man Freddie Mercury originally sang the song. But the real mindblower here is the video, which features Shatner's face as part of the sky, singing the words. In fact, it recalls the first ever scifi film, "A Trip To The Moon." Then, the universe seeps through his face, constellations come to life and the weather goes nuts.
The funny part is, despite the song being decades old, Shatner hadn't even heard it until last year.
"If you had asked me a year ago about Freddie Mercury and Queen, I wouldn't be able to tell you," he recently told Spinner. "If you had played me 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' I would have told it you that was one of the greatest pieces of music I've ever heard. It's operatic, it's modern and beautifully sung. And then if you would have told me about the history of Freddie Mercury and Queen, I would have gasped because it's so dramatic. But I knew nothing of that until I came to it in this latter day."
This video makes us gasp, that's for sure. It may have even surpassed the "Wayne's World" rendition of the song.
