Ceci Bastida: 'Have You Heard' Music Video, The Latest From LA-based Latino Sensation

LA's It Girl: On The 'So-Called War Against Drugs In Mexico'

LA-based (and Tijuana-born) musician, Ceci Bastida, is on an upward trend.

She was part of a special photo spread on new Latin Music in The New York Times, was last year nominated for a Latin Grammy for her debut album 'Veo La Marea' (or 'I See the Tide'), has worked with DJ maestro Diplo and then lit up the stage at Lollapalooza in August.

Bastida has been in the music industry since age 15, when she was part of the band 'Tijuana No!' - but now that she's out on her own, this indie star on the rise is getting lots of attention - from NPR, to KCRW, and of course LA's local music headquarters, Amoeba Music, who featured her in the lineup at one of their after-hour tastemaker events at the historic LA Central Library.

Her live club shows in Los Angeles and Mexico are often subject to rave reviews but she also loves throwing in a cover here and there - sometimes of Kanye West, Miike Snow or even The Clash. Speaking of covers, her rendition of the Go-Go's 'This Town' on her album pays homage to Los Angeles but with a little Latino flair. She told NPR of the track, "This is such a Los Angeles story, and I thought it only focused on a particular side of L.A. I wanted to add the Latino presence - all these people that are here doing these jobs that people don't pay attention to."

Bastida's passion for social justice comes to the forefront in her newest video, below, for the single 'Have You Heard?" - which features Rye Rye and focuses on one of Tijuana and Mexico's biggest problems today: the drug business. According to BoingBoing, she feels

The so-called war against drugs in Mexico, the situation is not improving. It affects me and my family, people I know and the country I love. This is a topic I have to incorporate into my music. I believe the president's strategy is not working yet, and the numbers confirm it. It's time to support another form of dialogue.
