Deborah Bradley, Lisa Irwin's Mom, Has A Dark Side, Says Former Best Friend

First Posted: 10/20/11 07:47 PM ET Updated: 12/20/11 05:12 AM ET

Deborah Bradley, the mother of missing Kansas City infant Lisa Irwin, has come under a cloud of suspicion, as police accuse her of being uncooperative and her recollection of events leading up to the disappearance seems to change.

None of that appears to surprise Shirley Pfaff, who describes herself as Bradley's former best friend.

"She was my friend at one time and I loved to be around her, but when I [saw] the other side of her and got to know the true Debbie, I couldn't even believe I trusted her with anything," Pfaff told The Huffington Post.

Bradley and Lisa’s father, Jeremy Irwin, reported their daughter missing on Oct. 4. Bradley and Irwin said the 10-month-old infant was discovered missing when the father returned home from working a night shift. They suggest she was kidnapped from an unlocked window as the mother and two other boys slept.

The case has garnered national media attention and, Bradley went on NBC's "Today" show on Monday to break a nine-day silence. She admitted she had been drinking "enough to be drunk" on the night of her baby's disappearance and told NBC's Peter Alexander that the last time she saw her daughter was actually at 6:40 p.m. on the night of her disappearance, not 10:30 p.m. as she had originally told police. Bradley has also admitted to failing a police-administered lie detector test.

"They said that I failed when they asked me where she was [and] if I knew where she was," Bradley said.

Pfaff said she was surprised by Baby Lisa's disappearance, but not by the inconsistencies surrounding Bradley's story.

"I am not shocked that her story has changed like the wind," she said. "That's typical Debbie."

Pfaff, who now lives in Erie, Pa., said she met Bradley in 2002 at Ft. Bragg, N.C. They were military wives at the time and lived across the street from each other. The couple's kids played together and they quickly became close friends, she said.

"When the story broke, it was a normal morning in my house," Pfaff added. "I got up, put on a pot of coffee and turned on 'Good Morning America' like usual and I ... heard 'Deborah Bradley.' I immediately thought, 'This can't be the Debbie I know.' It just seemed unreal until I walked back into the living room after hearing her voice. I just about collapsed. It just made me sick because I just wouldn't put this girl Debbie past anything crazy."

Despite clearing nearly 700 tips and leads in Baby Lisa's disappearance, investigators say they have no suspects in the case. Nevertheless, Bradley has said she expects to be arrested, but told NBC News she hoped that would not happen.

"I had absolutely nothing to do with it," she said. "It's a waste of time, money, energy and focus and people should be looking for [Lisa]."

While authorities have declined to discuss many aspects of the case, they did spend a significant amount of time conducting an aggressive search of Bradley and Irwin's house.

"We were out at the house on a search warrant for a very long time yesterday and into early this morning," Kansas City police spokesman Capt. Steve Young told The Huffington Post.

Police, with assistance from the FBI, were seen digging in the backyard of the residence and they hauled off several bags of items.

"Some things were taken from the home but I can't go into detail on what was taken or what was learned or not learned from the search yet," Young said. "Should we learn something from this search that we think would benefit the case by making public, we will definitely be all over that."

Authorities had conducted previous searches of the home, as well as nearby wooded areas and a landfill.

The parents' attorney, Joe Tacopina, said he would contact The Huffington Post "as soon as possible" today; however, no call was received.

Tacopina told People his clients are available to investigators to answer questions, but Young said "their level of cooperation is not what we believe it needs to be."

Although the parents' level of cooperation with authorities remains in question, they have participated in a rash of recent TV interviews. According to Pfaff, Bradley often wants to be the center of attention. She also said her former friend has a dark side. She can be a con artist and is able to turn on fake tears. It is that side of her, Pfaff said, that destroyed their friendship.

"I was friends with Debbie for some time [and] then the 'friend' I once grew fond of became a 'problem' I had to deal with on a daily basis," she said.

Pfaff said she was happy when the military transferred her husband.

"Me and my ex-husband got orders to be stationed overseas in Europe shortly after mine and Debbie's friendship diminished," she said. "So I thought of that as a new clean slate for us, without all the drama Debbie created with and around us."

Pfaff would not elaborate on the exact problems she had with Bradley, but insisted she is not a "Debbie-basher."

"My intentions of speaking with the media [are] to shed some light on the Debbie I once knew, both good and bad," she said.

Contacted by The Huffington Post today, Baby Lisa's aunt, Ashley Irwin, indicated the family believes the infant is alive and is still with her abductor.

"We have no evidence, no leads and no idea where she is," Irwin said. "We need everyone’s help to keep an eye out for her and bring her home as she could be anywhere. There is a $100,000 reward for her safe return. The offer of dropping her off somewhere safe, no questions asked, is still applicable."

Irwin declined to discuss the case further. "If you want any more details you'll have to ask their attorney," she said.

Pfaff said she has followed the case in the news and is "completely shocked" that some people have been "actually vouching, claiming [Bradley] could never have done anything to baby Lisa."

She added: "I pray every night that the baby is found. For better or for worse, I just pray for her return and hope justice will be served for whoever has done anything with or to the innocent baby girl."

OK I have seen these dogs alert because the trainer gave the command. Cops do that, to make it appear that their theory is right. "We need to look at this harder and get a warrant because the dog alerted"

Cops will have a toy (usually a rolled up hand towel or something similar" and they will walk the dog around with it and bang it against stuff to get the dog to bark. Watch traffic stops and you will see, I'm not saying all dogs are a fraud, but I am saying that they are used to further the cops agenda. Whats the dog gonna say "no I didn't smell anything, I wanted that damn toy that my trainer is teasing me with"

If statistics were actually kept on this sort of thing, I would bet my appendages that over half the times a dog alerts nothing is found.

The facts here are, there ARE NO facts, the police cant find anything, their incompetence is staggering and instead of looking for this baby they are spending more time trying to prove "they were right" They don't care about this baby, just the appearance of what people think of them.

And this "ex-friend" is wanting some media attention, she cant say what it is that makes Debbie a bad person, just that she didn't like her....shes a sick individual to try and get her 15 minutes off this baby's disappearance

Show me some evidence that the parents are guilty of baby Lisa's disappearance and I'll consider it...but without facts, you just don't know. What about Kyron Horman, the young boy missing from Oregon, Stepmom has been blamed but no indictment, no evidence, no Kyron...been over a year now. What about Jon Benet Ramsey? That case has yet to be solved...everyone suspected the parents...and nearly 20 years later...no arrests, a cold trail. This seems to be another sad situation...no good leads, parents say their innocent...a baby is missing.....what a world!

I think the JonBenet Ramsey case is very relevant. They are still under a cloud of suspicion because they didn't fully cooperate with police early in the investigation. I believe their reluctance had to do with the police jumping to the conclusion that they did it. Did you know that DNA tests of blood found on JonBenet's clothing did not match anyone in the family? The police issued a statement in 2008 clearing the family. The parents didn't just say they were innocent, THEY WERE INNOCENT. (Too late for Patsy Ramsey who died of cancer in 2006.) Many thought or still think that their son Burke (9 years old at the time) accidentally killed JonBenet. Would you want your son to be interviewed by police who thought he did it? How traumatizing would that be? (Ever hear of Michael Crowe? He was 14 when his sister was killed and police thought he did it, so they interrogated him for 2 days until he finally admitted that he killed her. Except that DNA tests proved he didn't do it.)

The police need to do their job and find real evidence to prove what happened.

It's downright cruel for a "friend" to pop up and say things like that at a time when Debbie needs all the support she can get. Even if the friendship ended, to take the time and energy to print what she did, it's just very ugly at this time.

The clock is ticking away on this baby being found with any forensic evidence...how could Deborah Bradley have outsmarted law enforcement...she doesn't seem that bright...! Wher could she have put that baby?
12:44 PM on 10/26/2011
It's so nice when evidence, due process, and common sense aren't needed to convict a person. Because heaven forbid we have FACTS or PROOF of guilt. They're just guilty. Forget the trial and hang them all.

My hope is that Law Enforcement will find little Lisa's body before it decomposes and the manner of death cannot be determined...someone please find this baby!

I'm thinking the police are using the information found by the dog who sniffed something by the baby's crib....I'm sure they have every evidence from that area! As we are speculating, they are working hard to find out what happened. Also looks like their home is sort of a trailer type and very easy to break into...and who knows what transient traffic goes on in that area?
09:35 AM on 10/26/2011
It was found near the mom's side of the bed not the crib. The hose is a ranch in a middle class working neighborhood, the police tried to re-enact the break in and couldn't, it WASN'T easy. Transient traffic? Please, if that were the case no one would have noticed a man walking down the street with a baby and think it was odd, they would have brushed it off. You might want to read up on the facts so far before stating such things.

Lisa looks sad in all of her baby photos, wonder if her mom drank while she nursed her...still, that "friend" seemed to speak up out of spite since she didn't shed any new light on Lisa's mom so venting her feelings only benefited her it seems. Too soon to know whether or not the mom killed Lisa, but drinking doesn't necessarily equal murder although I think it's possible as a few people have said that she rolled over on top of her and doesn't remember what happened.

How come you never hear of a diffrent race baby missing
06:11 PM on 10/23/2011
You do hear about it if your not close minded and hung up on the whole race thing! http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/10/23/police-search-for-missing-arizona-girl-as-grandmother-pleads-investigators-to/

I'm tired of people like you tossing the race card into situations where they don't belong!
06:47 PM on 10/23/2011
thats a racist comment...but of course you won't believe that..
04:46 PM on 10/23/2011
How about her military husband... or anyone she knew back then who knew she liked to have a drink once she put her children to bed? Maybe they thought that they would provide a better home? If it were a trained member of the military, they would be fit enough to climb through the window, take the baby and walk several miles.

It's pretty obvious to any sane person that the Mom has problems . She gets drunk while attending to an infant . A crime . Then she lies to police about being drunk . Another crime . She fails a lie detector test so that blows her " Blackout " defense as she knows something . Her friend is obviously scared of her and her lawyers . The cadaver dogs pointed out remains so the authorities should be looking in the woods with cadaver dogs .

Its an ex friend and most ex friends don't speak to highly of an ex friend, do they. I personally wouldn't believe the ex friend either..

If Shirley Pfaff has any real evidence about Deborah Bradley, she should contact the police and not the Huffington Post. The fact that she contacted the media makes me wonder who the real 'drama queen' is in this scenario. With friends like these.......

I lost my daughter 6 years ago. I got the knock on my door at midnight. and it was the police telling me she had died.. You do not cry, you are numb. You are in shock. You do not sleep. You are sick to your stomach. Debbie had fake tears, and if she was drunk and blacked out...she remembers nothing most likely and is unsure of what happened that night. Yes I think she did it.

my heart is broken over your story...i can't imagine having your loss and hope that the awful pain you must have to deal with softens over time. loving energy and thoughts sent to you.

"You do not cry, you are numb. You are in shock. You do not sleep. You are sick to your stomach. Debbie had fake tears..."

How do you know how someone else would handle their missing child? The police have not said the baby is dead either...so the going number part has not technically happened...come on...your accusations are ridicolous with such little evidence. how would you feel if the police knocked on your door and told you you killed your child instead of the other way around....You don't know how someone else would handle the death/lost of their baby...stop the madness.

I am however sorry for your lost.
08:39 AM on 10/23/2011
I believe that is she was drunk and blacked out.....she has no idea of what she did or did not do. I believe Debbie is completely at fault. I think she may have been woke up from her stupor and did not want to be bothered with the baby who was sick. Yes I think she is responsible for the baby's death. The tears were fake. If you lose a child you are in shock, and you do not cry and you can hardly think. Debbie is not sure what happened...she was drunk and out of it. That is the problem here.
06:22 PM on 10/23/2011
I'm sorry for your personal loss, but how you dealt with your loss is not how everyone deals with theirs. Personal tragedy is just that: personal. I personally know people who have lost children, and only one did not cry.

Whether or not this woman's tears were real, I don't know; I haven't watched any of the footage, nor have I read many of the reports. What I do know is that no one knows what happened. Least especially those of us who are only familiar with the story via media outlet.

I hope these parents are sleeping well in their nice warm bed at night all while knowing where they dumped their beautiful baby girl Lisa! They make me sick and I can't wait to see them facing a jury!

I think the friend from Ft Bragg ought to either state all the facts or shut her mouth, she seems more of an "attention getter" than she claims Debbie was by stating 1/2 facts/stories.
