Muslim Reality Show, 'All-American Muslim,' To Premiere On TLC (VIDEO)

First Posted: 10/21/11 08:40 PM ET Updated: 12/21/11 05:12 AM ET

What's life like as a Muslim-American?

A new eight-part series on TLC that premieres November 13 will try to answer that question by following the lives of five very different Muslim-American families. The show, "All-American Muslim", was filmed in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit that's known for it's large Arab-American population. It promises to go "inside the rarely seen world of American Muslims to uncover a unique community struggling to balance faith and nationality in a post 9/11 world," according to a press release.

Producers picked a diverse crowd to profile, from sisters who are polar opposites (one wears a headscarf and prays daily, the other has tattoos -- generally frowned upon in Islam -- and is married an Irish Catholic) to a high school football coach to newlyweds, in order to show people who "share the same religion, but lead very distinct lives that often times challenge the Muslim stereotype." The series will also address issues such as the post-9/11 life for Muslims and gender roles in Islam.

The show, which is rare for its focus on Muslims, has generated much buzz in the Muslim-American community as well as non-Muslims. Dawud Walid, the executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said he is looking forward to watching the series.

"It'll give us a taste of the lives of Muslim-Americans in both their aspirations and concerns. I think the show will be good and humanizing for the Muslim community of Dearborn," said Walid, who is friends with one of the cast members. Walid cautioned that, in terms of ethnic background, Muslims are "much more diverse than what Dearborn may show. Dearborn is an anomaly in the American Muslim landscape for its large Arab-American population and concentrated Muslim population."

The first episode of "All-American Muslim" airs at 10 p.m. Eastern time on TLC.

Here is a run-down of the show's characters, courtesy of TLC.

Suehaila and Shadia: Suehaila wears a traditional headscarf and follows daily prayer rituals - while Shadia, her outspoken sister, is decorated with piercings and tattoos and recently married Jeff, an Irish Catholic who is converting to Islam.

Nader and Nawal: Newlyweds expecting their first baby, Nader and Nawal are working to strike the right balance between their traditional Muslim roots and American culture.

Fouad: As head coach of the Fordson High School football team, Fouad has pioneered a shift in his team's summer practice schedule by flipping to night workouts from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. since a majority of his team are Muslim and are fasting for Ramadan.

Mike and Angela: Mike, a deputy chief sheriff, and his wife Angela, a consultant to a major auto manufacturer, are juggling their busy careers with raising their four children in a modern Muslim family.

Nina: A strong, independent Muslim businesswoman, Nina's family runs the premier wedding and banquet hall in Dearborn — but against their advice, she is trying to venture off on her own to open a nightclub.

Samira and Ali: Samira and her husband of seven years, Ali, struggle with fertility issues and are pursuing numerous options including conventional fertility techniques, dietary alternatives and Muslim supplication prayers. After years of unsuccessful attempts, Samira considers putting on the Hijab in order to be closer to God and hopefully be blessed with a child.

Check out a slideshow of some of the cast members below.

CLARIFICATION: An earlier version of this story stated that tattoos are illegal in Islam. This has been clarified to reflect that most Islamic scholars consider tattoos illegal and that the legality is debated among a minority of scholars.

I see alot of comments here from folks who claim a real follower of Islam is not at all like this and are appauled that it was shown. The comments repeatedly state that the show insults the muslim religion and it's agenda to show muslims in an every day life is way off base for most.
The segment I viewed showed alot of private religious stuff which I feel should be private not displayed on public tv. To me peoples religion is not entertaining. Perhaps the show should have been a documentary rather than a tv series. I think the man veiwed who called people bigots was way off base. In consideration of all this I do find it controversial from many different perspectives.

The funny thing is they are showing this family as muslim. The fact is that they aren't.Put these people in the middle of the middle east and they would be killed for how they insult the muslim religion. This shows agenda is to make muslims seem like they are just regular people, but a true follower of islam is not compatible with western beliefs.

I'm just going to throw this out there because as a gay person, I know what it's like to be hated by both non-gays and even other gay people for simply existing. But here's what I've learned in this life so far: find one way, one connection, one bridge to someone who is not like you. They may hate you, they may think you're garbage. But YOUR PRIDE as a person, as another human being, who has done the right thing for someone else. That lasts forever. I've had to deal with people who (if they knew), they'd never speak to me again. When you've gone through this, you look at life and people differently. Having met an equal amount of rude, unfriendly gay people was the moment when I discovered that, no matter what 'group' you are, society needs to know that just because you share the same race, religion, sexual orientation does not mean you're 'all in this together'. There's more infighting than there is fighting between groups, trust me.

Peace, be kind, and calm down. We aren't here long enough to hate people this much.

Buried in hysteria about taqiyya, there is some interesting information about two of the characters in the show that was news to me:

also what shocked me most is when someone says i read quran and i know that its full of hatred. i studied arabic since my childhood and i swear that quran is not a simple book to understand bc it's not a historical book. can u read a chimecal book and understand it by urself? no of course unless if it's part of ur studies . reading quran is not simple u need schollars to help u undertand it especially that most translations have bad intrerpretations. we have christian americans and canadians and british and africans who live among us. they don't feel treatned at all.
islam is not the saudi arabia or the middle east or afganistan or iran. Jesus Christ was very kind and so was his mom so pls if u r real followers of his commands be like him and show us that ur better than us and stop cursing or saying bad words ( this is for mulims too who don't show respect . god said a true mulsllim never say bad words even if he is cursed). May God bless us all. amen

i watch a lot american shows and i know they have problems even more than ours : drugs , crimes, pshycologi
cal prob, divorce, a lot of single mothers who fight everyday to raise their kids, medical insurance, old parents with nobody to care about them, black people who r mistreated ( our prophet mohamed was angry bc one of his friends called another friend Billal" son of a black" and he immediately appologied to him by putting his head on the earth and asked bilal to step on it but bilal was merciful and forgived him. that happened 1432 years ago).etc. u would say don't believe the media? ok . i ve

sometimes when i read some comments i feel shocked bc some people hate islam just bc of the horrible attack that happened in 9/11 or bc of women not allowed to drive in saudi arabia or bc of some nuts who misbehave with women (as if women r not beating at all in the western world:pls go tour police records and see how many women r mistreated in ur countries )or about what happens in Iran( even sunny muslims r mistreated in Iran) or bc of one million or less terrorists living among us. , i m a muslim woman, i drive whererver i want, i love my religion. i ve never seen my father beat my mom or ever say bad things to her. they have problems like all couples but they solve it without punching each other.

I am just waiting for the next shows... All American Atheists, All American Buddhists, All American Catholics... let's be fair now.

The "All-American Muslim" show on TLC is a clear misrepresentation of Islam. It is not about Islam, it is about ridiculous attention grabbing Arabs. Point Blank. It should be called Arab Americans on Crack. Because they're delusional. The Catholic guy's nail had more modesty than his so-called muslim wife. Allahuakbar!!! Now I understand the black muslim's anger about not being involved. A... true representation of American Muslims would feature the humble lives of truly diverse muslim families that struggle to combat the stereotypes and harassment of non-muslim americans whiling remaining committed to their faith. Call me boring. This is not Islam. To the people on the show, shame on you for allowing yourself to be made a mockery of. Shame on you for calling yourself muslim.
05:37 PM on 11/18/2011
Yes. Thank you. As a woman who spent five years married to a Muslim man, living within a Muslim family, I also agree this is a poor representation of Islam in America. Never did I meet Muslims like any of these, especially considering those on the show were supposed to be Shiite Muslim (as were my in-laws). It's an embarrassment to decent, devout Muslim people. I watched the show last night, did not care for it, and don't plan to watch again. I see it much on the same level as My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. Mahasalem, I agree. It was nothing but an attempt at attention grabbing.

I love ittttttt. Can't wait for next episode. This is really good show to educate Americans about us MUSLIMS since as soon as you say you are a muslim people think you are a terorist. I am muslim from Europe(Bosnia) and I am PROUD OF IT. People don't understand that there is so many muslims in the world and they are "normal" like them. I have never been covered in my country I was leading same life like here in America, but respected my religion. I don't know why is for christians ok to follow their religion but for muslims it is not . This show shows diversities that every religion , family, community has. So thumbs up Dearborn!!!!!!
06:22 PM on 11/14/2011
" have never been covered in my country I was leading same life like here in America, but respected my religion" Respecting Your Religion By Not Covering and openly being proud of that, is that really respect towards Islam? kinda hypocritical dont you think?
10:57 PM on 11/15/2011
well answer me this. If the muslim faith is so peaceful then why is it that it is not legal to worship freely if you are a Christian in Iran? My wife is an Assyrian born in Iran and spent the first 20 years of her life there. Assyrian pastors were murdered by your peaceful muslim leaders because they do not believe in the moon god. Of course none of this ever hits the media. Her family was heavily persecuted and could not have an organized place of public worship in a Christian church. The reason people think muslims are terrorists is almost every attack, USS Cole, 9-11, the 1993 car bombing attack at World Trade Center, Fort Hood, etc. all were muslims. I read a bumper sticker the other day that said not all muslims are terrorists but almost all terrorists are muslim.

Ignore that favorite - hit the wrong button when I went to reply. There is NOTHING worthwhile in your post other than to serve as an example of hatred and ignorance to others. And you conveniently omit the second deadliest terrorist attack on US soil... you know the one in Oklahoma carried out by a 'Christian'.

You forgot a few, the OK City bombing, the Unibomber, the Anthrax mailer, the man that crashed a plane into the IRS building.......Oh wait, they were Americans and not Muslim at all.....I may be wrong but, I doubt you have even met a Muslim and if you have you just predjudicially assumed they were bad.....Any things like The Inquisition, The Salem witch trials, persecution of Jews by Christians, The Burning times,Native residnetial schools (look them up) sound like the actions of a "peaceful" religion to you? Dont like being reminded about those things or just assume if they aren't mentioned they'll go away?

Figures! My Aunt has lived in Dearborn Heights for over 50 years. She says since the muslims or arabs, what ever you want to call them, the city has gone to hell. It's ugly, dirty.Businesses have gone under.People can't sell their homes. They must not have loved their "own" homeland enough to want to leave it.Shame on them!

actually if you do your history and stop listening to your racist aunt, it was arab-americans who kept metro-detroit business alive when it others gave up.

John Quincy Adams
The precept of the koran is, perpetual war against all who deny, that Mahomet is the prophet of God. The vanquished may purchase their lives, by the payment of tribute; the victorious may be appeased by a false and delusive promise of peace; and the faithful follower of the prophet, may submit to the imperious necessities of defeat: but the command to propagate the Moslem creed by the sword is always obligatory, when it can be made effective. The commands of the prophet may be performed alike, by fraud, or by force.
06:15 PM on 11/15/2011
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Fell asleep. Sorry. If I wanted to learn about the Koran, I would have gone to the library and read it.

First of all am sorry, my english is very bad (am frensh)

- Moroccan muslims are not the same than lebanese muslims not the same than indonesian muslims, because they dont have the same history, they dont have the same traditions, they dont have the same culture...

- And please stop using Saudi arabia as reference, Allah and his Prophet never said that a woman cant drive.

- About the twin towers, real muslims are very very sorry for what happened, and please dont forget that Terrorists like ben ladden killed more muslim people than non-muslim people. and that these terrorists are not Muslim.

- In christianity there is catholicism, protestantism and others in Islam there is sunni, shiism, kharidjisme and others so of course its not easy to make a show with all-American Muslim but at least (and i think this is the first time in american TV) there is a show about muslims and they are not "muslim" terrorist, just normal families trying to live a happy life like most of muslim people.

Thank you TLC

How quickly we forget ! For whatever reason(s), the producers of this show have chosen to ignore the teachings of Islam and the Q'ran. I'm guessing Islamic opinions about Christians and Jews is of no consequence ?

How about the negative jewish opinion of christians taught all over in the Talmud?
