Cornel West Arrested: Activist Allegedly Arrested Taking Part In Occupy Wall Street Protest In New York

Cornel West Arrested New York

First Posted: 10/21/11 04:46 PM ET Updated: 12/21/11 05:12 AM ET

Public intellectual and Princeton University professor Cornel West was allegedly arrested taking part in a rally in connection with the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York Friday, according to multiple reports on Twitter.

West was taking part in a rally that aimed to protest the New York Police Department's "Stop and Frisk" policies, when he was arrested Friday, according to The Atlantic Wire. West started taking part in the Occupy Wall Street protests last month.

Friday's arrest marks the second time the activist has been arrested in a month. West was one of 19 people arrested Sunday afternoon after they refused to leave the grounds of the Supreme Court, The Associated Press reports. West was taking part in a protest against corporate influence in politics when he was arrested.

West isn't the only celebrity to get arrested demonstrating in support of Occupy Wall Street. Feminist author Naomi Wolf led away in handcuffs after addressing protesters on the sidewalk outside an event honoring New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, among others, hosted by The Huffington Post Tuesday.

The protesters said they were demonstrating against Cuomo's stance on New York state's "millionaire's tax," according to The Guardian. Cuomo is opposed to extending it.

Protesters were arrested in at least four U.S. cities over the weekend, including in New York, taking part in the protests. The NYPD arrested 700 protesters on the Brooklyn Bridge last month.

Protesters have been camped out in lower Manhattan's Zuccotti Park for more than a month demonstrating against income inequality, among other things. The protests have spread worldwide with multiple celebrities endorsing the movement including Russell Simmons, George Soros and Susan Sarrandon.

Really impressed with Dr. West's continued activism after all these years. A buddy of mine was arrested with him and wrote this piece - criticizing the intersections of the police and our education system. http://www.contentofcharacter.org/?p=2390

West is one of my heroes, he tells it like it is! He is brilliant and has concern for his fellow human beings! I love how how he is not afraid to tell Obama where he is wrong and making mistakes! I am an Obama supporter that feels exactly like West! Leaders like West are few and far between! May he live long and prosper!

Whatever West's motives I applaud him for bringing the corporate take over of our laws and government in this country. "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine". There is that catchy enough for you?

Welcome to the plight of a  black person in America OWS supporters. We The 99% are experiencing the same thing black people have suffered from for a long time.
I'm disgusted  by people that attack a black man for voicing his opinion and automatically label him as " another black man jumping on the bandwagon for publicity".
The  people that label all blacks as lazy are the same ones that refuse to hire them. Now that we the 99% are in the same boat blacks have been in maybe we should listen to mr West and I'm sure he can provide us with great ideas and collectively we can solve our problems.

Until we recognize that we are all brothers and sisters the corporate elite will continue to dominate our governments agenda. Get off your butt and vote. Nothing strikes fear into the hearts of the elite like an engaged population that won't be manipulated.

Another "race hustler" just like Jesse Jackson, but West wraps himself in the "poverty blanket" too.

Wonder what his Princeton salary is?

If he were in California he would be some kind of 3 time loser. Maybe then we wouldn't have to see him being embelished by the media.

Is Cornel for real? Or is he pulling Jesse Jackson to get his face on camera? Is it about the cause or face time?

All the racist comments on this thread support the idea that the people who are up in arms about the revolution and its Occupants are so scared about change and societal advancement, they just want to go back to the 1950s.
