Terry Thompson, Ohio Man Who Freed Exotic Animals, Was Deep In Debt, Took In Unwanted Pets

ZANESVILLE, Ohio -- The exotic-animal owner who killed himself after turning loose dozens of lions, tigers and other beasts was deep in debt, and a fellow big-cat enthusiast said Thursday that he had taken in so many creatures he was "in over his head."

A day after sheriff's deputies with high-powered rifles killed nearly 50 animals set free by Terry Thompson, the sheriff refused to speculate why he did it. Many neighbors, meanwhile, were puzzled as to why Thompson - a man who seemed to like animals more than people - would lash out in a way that would doom his pets.

However, court records show that he and his wife owed at least $68,000 in unpaid taxes to the IRS and the county, and he had two federal tax liens filed against him last year. He had just gotten out of federal prison last month for possessing unregistered weapons.

Kenny Hetrick, who has six tigers and other animals on his property outside Toledo, said he used to see Thompson at exotic-animal auctions a few times a year in Ohio. Many of Thompson's tigers had been donated to him by people who bought baby animals that they no longer wanted once they started to grow, Hetrick said.

"He really had more there than what he could do," Hetrick said. "I don't know what his deal was, but he was in over his head."

This is a handout photo from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium of one of two macaques that were captured by authorities Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, a day after their owner released dozens of wild animals and then killed himself near Zanesville, Ohio.

On Tuesday, Thompson, 62, threw open the cages at his animal preserve and committed suicide. His body was found near the empty cages with a bite on the head that appeared to have been inflicted by a big cat shortly after Thompson shot himself, Sheriff Matt Lutz said. It appeared his body had been dragged a short distance, Lutz said.

Deputies killed 48 animals - including 18 rare Bengal tigers, 17 lions and eight bears - in a hunt across the Ohio countryside that lasted nearly 24 hours. Only a monkey was still missing, and it was probably killed by one of the big cats, Lutz said.

Thompson had run-ins with his neighbors and the law over escaped animals and conditions at his preserve. But whether he acted out of desperation or vengeance in setting the animals loose was unclear.

"I know how much he cared for them, and he would know that they would be killed," said Judy Hatfield, a family friend who visited the farm many times and said it wasn't unusual to have a monkey jump on her lap.

"I don't know what happened. I'm sure some horrible thing happened to him yesterday to make him do this or allow him to lose focus for a moment and do it. But I don't know what it is, and we may never know."

The sheriff said Thompson's intentions were not part of the investigation.

"To take your own life, Mr. Thompson was not in the right state of mind," Lutz said. "And to speculate on why he did this would be a belittlement, I guess, by me, to do that, and I'm not going to do that."

Thompson and his wife spent much of their time and money caring for their menagerie, neighbors said. Most of the big cats and bears were declawed and had been bottle-fed by the couple, Hatfield said. Thompson also kept them fed by picking up roadkill and collecting spoiled meat from grocery stores, said another neighbor, Fred Polk.

The sheriff said that he spoke with Thompson's wife and that she was distraught over the loss of her husband and the animals. "You have to understand these animals were like kids to her," Lutz said. "She probably spent more time with these animals than some parents do spend with their kids."

Thompson's Muskingum County Animal Farm was not open to visitors, but he would occasionally take some of the smaller animals to nearby pet shows or nursing homes. He also provided a big cat for a photo shoot with supermodel Heidi Klum and appeared on the "Rachael Ray Show" in 2008 as an animal handler for a zoologist guest.

As for how he may have covered the costs of taking care of his animals, friends said he had a pilot's license and sometimes picked up extra cash flying people on his private plane. Neighbors also said he and wife gave horse-riding lessons on their farm. The Vietnam veteran once owned a motorcycle shop, friends said.

"When he came back from Vietnam, he was a little bit different. He was kind of a loner after he came back," said Polk, whose property is about 100 yards from Thompson's house. "He liked animals more than he did people. He really did."

Since 2004, Thompson had been charged by local authorities with cruelty to animals, allowing his animals to run free and improperly disposing of dead animals.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture also received two complaints about the farm in 2008 and 2009, involving such things as pens that may have been unsafe, animals that were too skinny and dead animals on the property, said Dave Sacks, a USDA spokesman. But the agency decided it had no authority to act.

Federal officials said the government had no jurisdiction over the farm under either the Animal Welfare Act or the Endangered Species Act since the animals were held as private property and were not exhibited or being used for other commercial purposes.

This is what we call a cascading problem.
One issue impacts another which then creates more issues.

For example, people who're allowed to have big cats as pets.
Those cute little tiger kittens get bigger and people realize "hey, this thing might eat me"
They get rid of it, but don't want it killed, so they give it to a rescue.
The rescue winds up with tons of animals that cost a lot to feed.

All of the later problems could have been avoided had people simply not been allowed to own big cats (or bears, or Hippo's or whatever) as pets. Some animals, despite what people may think are not good to have as pets.

It's a shame all these animals were shot, but honestly in the long term it was probably the smart thing to do. They'd spent too much time around humans to be released and Zoo's can't take them. At best they'd wind up in a state run rescue.

The man had obvious mental problems and he will get no sympathy from me. He was in over his head with these animals and the state should have stepped in and taken them when the first complaint was called in perhaps the could have taken some to a "real" sanctuary instead of that dump. He set his animals free knowing that they would be killed, there is no way law enforcement would have taken the time to tranquilize two much less eighteen tigers!! I am a animal lover to the fullest extent, but I would have an issue with a 500 pound cat roaming around my backyard. It is very sad that the animals had to be killed though, what the man did was selfish and cruel, he didn't love his animals very much if he sent them to their doom. I feel sorry for his wife and those animals. Hope the man rots....

In wildness is the salvation of mankind

Being a part of the process of saving anything, including the Earth, is a highly emotional and heart wrenching experience. We who love Holy Creation have to sit and listen to the strive for riches and paper monies at the expense of Almighty Creation and helpless, defenseless animals where entire species are obliterated for eternity. Those enlightened by the science of ecology, also comprehend, man is killing the Earth and all that makes Earth a life creating and sustaining planet. This is not an easy road to travel.

At least, while he could, he tried to save what was possible for him to endure. Conversely, so many of our species, just consume and reach for the few pieces of silver at the expense of all, including Earth. Not caring about Earth or her strands in the web of all life. At least, he cared. At least, he tried. A tragic and sad commentary for Earth and for a man, who tried to make a difference. That a few pieces of silver would ruin this man's dreams of salvation, is the inherent evil because so many homo sapiens could care less for anything but paper and plastic monies, a dying world for a plastic and singular focus of everything but life and Holy Creation.

This man was a compassionate animal lover that was hounded by law enforcement because someone in that office disliked what he did. For a man and his wife to take in orphaned animals and buy neglected animals AND GIVE THEM A GOOD HOME to be persecuted like this is simply terrible. Most of these animals could have been SAVED if just an ounce of thought was used and implemented. The "field day of officers shooting exotic endangered animals should be investigated and charges filed against those involved. Their actions were the height of stupidity. I think his wife's story should be told, let her explain how these animals were loved to the point that it cost them everything they had. Just being released from prison ( because he had some "unregistered guns") and with the government breathing down his neck for unpaid tax's (while in prison) to the fact he got them food by anyway possible. These people were violated and it will all be "swept under the rug" under the disguise "public safety". I am not in denial that there were some dangerous animals that were released, but with the local law enforcement KNOWING THIS they should have had a plan already known to it's officers as to what they should do in an emergency. NO THEY JUST USED THEIR GUNS TO KILL 17 VERY RARE TIGERS. A very incompetent law enforcement department.

How could these animals have been saved?
At best they could have been captured and moved to another sanctuary. They had already spent too much time around humans to be released to the wild, and Zoos can't take them.

You may have been right about the man being persecuted over petty grievances, but despite that he was still in over his head. Both him and his wife. They should have been in contact with somebody long ago to have a plan for getting rid of these animals.

So something bit and dragged him. I wonder if it was just trying to help him. It could have eaten him whatever it was. This is so so so sad - like a parent who commits suicide and takes their children with them. I just don't understand what the purpose was of freeing them? Surely if he had taken his own life, animal agencies would have stepped in and taken the animals. He didn't have to do this. It really makes me sad for every creature involved, animal and human.

YES, Mr Thompson "had emotional issues", HE CARED ABOUT ANIMALS, and he couldn't cope with people that had so little regard for the plight of orphaned and abused animals. We all lost a caring family man, HE CARED ABOUT ALL THE ANIMALS HE COULD SAVE TO THE POINT OF PERSONAL RUIN. Would YOU do that, I didn't think so. Walk a mile in "his" shoes, then you can complain about his emotional issues.

It was clear from one of the interviews with law enforcement that they were enjoying their "hunt" and senseless slaughter of all the animals. I certainly hope that the people who elected the great Sheriff and his crew remember this at election time. He clearly lacks in leadership and management capabilities. These animals did not need to die. I am only afraid of what else he and his crew are capable of, I am certainly glad that I don't live there or anywhere near there, I would fear for my safety from the very ones that are supposed to protect us.

If you ran around the countryside dressed as a tiger or a bear, I'm sure you would have reasons to fear for your life. Dressed as a human..., not so much. The sheriff will win by a landslide. If he had tried to "catch" the animals and even one citizen was killed..., he would have been looking for a job. "Too Serve and Protect" means humans.

As I understand it, and I'm inclined to believe Jack Hanna, you can't use tranquilizer darts in the dark. What appalls me is that this place existed in the first place. These roadside zoos and private animal farms should be banned. Furthermore, if it's true that the Animal Welfare or Exotic Species people did not cover them because they were private and not exhibited, that's crazy. At least the Animal Welfare people should, just like they'd cover someone mistreating a cat. We have got to get these laws changed and enforced--where were the Customs when these animals were being brought in? And how did the owners get them as little animals? Everybody knows a tiger doesn't stay kitten size.
Meanwhile, this man has left his wife to deal with his death, the animals death, and the whole mess with money, and everything else. Charming, the whole thing.
12:51 AM on 10/23/2011
Well, one minor correction here. You can sucessfully dart and capture a wild animal in the dark or any other time of day. The problem here was 38 wild animals and each and every one of them capable of killing a grown man in 2 seconds. I am very glad that the Sheriff did not take the chance to save a tiger or lion and risk one of the residents life.

All the tigers in the world are not worth one human life.

"all the tigers in the world are not worth one human life" The arrogance of comments like this just sickens me. Humans are the most destructive and quite frankly, USELESS species on the face of the Earth in the grand scheme of things. Every other creature, from the tiniest bacteria and insect, up to the most fearsome predator, serves an important role in the web of life. We humans take and give nothing back.

There should be more rules about how to keep wild animals. I know we cant just let them go back to Africa and the rain forest, its not safe there either. But there has to be a better way. They cant just go extinct! Like everything else that has. Tasers, Tranqs, Stun guns,....The action taken here was wrong. Mourn for the poor animals that lost their lives because of their owner who let them go and took his life. For whatever reason, sorry but thats beyond stupid! This is torture! That is just plain and simple TRUTH here people! We as a nation need to fight back against this backwards stupid government! Its wrong! It was wrong to do what the authorities did! Come on nation, there are people ganging up on this downward spiral now. You cant hide in the eyes of the right, and you cant hide or take away what we've seen and heard. THIS STORY WILL NOT BE IGNORED! This will not continue, animal torture, hording and killing needs to end. And its going to start with this artical! Whos with me?!.

Change things for the better, for everyone. If you have wild animals, and you cant keep up with the bills and what not...hey call your local zoo and see what they can do for you. OR start up a website, and make it something fun for kids, and their families to learn about. BUT make your the county and Govt. or whoever is slacking up there reviews with you and makes sure the animals are alive and well, and that nothing can happen to anyone while visiting. HELLO?!. Common freaking sense! Good lord. If you are in a state that has little ruling about that, then hey cool. Good for you! But like I said....things need to change. This man should have not worked alone, he had his wife. Ok, whatever, good. But he should have been seen each month by an FFA person, or whatever. Someone in Ohio who has authority of what he was doing. Keeping wild animals in his possession.
