Cheese Most Stolen Food In The World

The Huffington Post

Move over Kobe beef and aged whiskey. It turns out cheese is the most stolen food in the world, says a recent global study.

That's the finding of a new report by the U.K.'s Center for Retail Research, which surveyed 1,187 retailers representing more than 250,000 retail outlets across 43 countries.

The figures showed 4% of cheese went missing from store shelves.

"The biggest threats for retailers are employees and shoplifters," said Dr. Joshua Bamfield, Director of the Center for Retail Research in a phone interview with The Huffington Post.

With the price of cheese rising, Bamfield says this is far from surprising given it could be seen as "a lucrative business opportunity for small time criminals."

"It's not just grannies saying, I need some cheese I'll just go and steal it. A lot of the theft is for resale and a lot of this cheese will be resold into other markets or to restaurants."

Other "high risk" foods to make the most stolen food list include fresh meat, chocolate, alcohol, seafood and infant formula.

Though the National Retail Federation does a survey each year on retail crime in the U.S., it doesn't track the most stolen goods and even found it unexpected to learn cheese topped the list.

"Yes, I'm surprised. For a gut check I called one of the largest grocery chains in the U.S. and they were surprised as well," said Joseph LaRocca from the National Retail Federation in an email to The Huffington Post.

Instead, LaRocca expected a less lucrative item to trump cheese. "Every sector of retail has their 'target items'....If I had to make a personal guess, it would be chewing gum," LaRocca added.

But it shouldn't really come as that much of a surprise that cheese is that sought after. Remember the cheese thieves of Oregon, who stole $600 of gouda and blue cheese wheels?

Either way, theft is a growing concern for retailers, especially since the annual amount of stolen retail goods increased by 6.6% since June 2010. But theft also adds to the global average family grocery shopping bill by an extra $200. In the U.S., that figure was $435, noted the report.

Hey what's the first thing you want after smoking a joint? Ok, make it the second thing sex is first. You want Cheese , remember going into the grocery store and looking at the cheese for what seemed like hours trying to decide ?
Ok here we go on the greedy company's wanting to make a profit after they have to pay high wages, health ins and ETC. OMG!! maybe put some away to purchase or repair equipment. Next all cows will be shipped to China so they can make cheese and have jobs and buy cars which use gas. Then Irag can sell their oil to them, causing a gas shortage here in the US , which in turn will cause prices to climb. Then we can blame Obama, Bush,Sponge Bob, Vikings, Moses or illegel alliens. Hell I forgot where I was going with this. So I'm going back to bed because none of this makes any sense. Good Night!!

Perhaps one day the GREEDY cheese manufacturers will "get it" and price the cheese reasonably, but until then, "go for the cheese I say - and run like hell" and while at it, don't forget to grab a tube of Preparation H, ( the most stolen item of all items, off of grocer's shelves, by the way - and who can blame them?.....) - [ Can anyone risk, ..."Price Check On Preparation H On Isle # 2" ] ???

I wonder if there's a correlation betwen eating too much cheese and hemorrhoids? (hmmm )

Infant formula is also stolen because it closely resembles various narcotic substances and is used by dealers as a filler. Large purchases attract the attention of law enforcement, so they steal it instead.

I wonder if the store owner shouted "that's nacho cheese" to the thieves as he tried to chase them down?

There is no honour in stealing, no excuses.
Flip burgers,or pan for money so you can afford a $20 cannister of formula.
When people steal it ends up costing others.

Infant formula is frequently stolen because it closely resembles certain narcotic substances and is used by dealers to cut those drugs. Drug-enforcement pays close attention to large purchases.

Maybe instead of putting cheese in the back of the store where there are no employees watching over the customer, stores need to put cheese on an endcap by all the clerks and cash registers.

I thought it was interesting, that is why I read the whole article, and commented on it. HP have wide range of topics with plenty of stories on each topic. Why weren't you reading one of those instead? Why did you waste your time if you were not concerned?
