Chelsea Clinton, Christy Turlington To College Students: How To Turn Good Intentions Into Real Action

First Posted: 10/22/11 11:37 AM ET Updated: 12/22/11 05:12 AM ET

When you put college students, technology and powerful activists in one room, real change is bound to happen.

Chelsea Clinton and Christy Turlington spoke at The George Washington University this past week to help launch 'GW Phones for Hope,' which will fund mobile health technology projects, ET Online reports.

Specifically, the Clinton Global Initiative has partnered with the university to raise funds and items to support solutions for child and maternal health issues worldwide.

Chelsea Clinton said this type of partnership is one of the most honorable things her dad has done, according to ET.

"One of the reasons I'm most proud of my father is through his work with the Clinton Global Initiative and the Clinton Global Initiative University," she told the college crowd. "He launched CGI and CGI U on the basic premise that everyone who wants to make a difference can and should. And the burden of how to turn good intentions into real action shouldn't be an insurmountable challenge."

The project's goal is to collect 20,000 cell phones by March 2012 to be recycled and used as in-the-field phones. Chelsea Clinton says the project hits the criteria necessary to turn ideas into real solutions -- the phone campaign is a unique idea, it's specific and it's measurable.

Christy Turlington, a maternal health activist, spoke about why the support the project can provide is so important, ET Online reports.

"The best way to address child survival is to invest in a mom," said Turlington, who suffered complications from giving birth to her daughter, Grace, eight years ago. "Our campaign is designed around using that angle of dealing with the health of the family through the mom when it's the most important time in her life, perhaps."

Chelsea is proud of her dad because if it were not for him both she and her mom would be nobody's. Zero. Zip. Nada. The perfect examples of the female leach.

Has she been to "Occupy Wall St." yet?

Recently in the same day I received 2 emails with the sender "Chelsea Clinton". Interesting, I thought, in that Chelsea Clinton has for years strongly rejected public attention and been very clear about it. I figured she wanted money and I was right - her father's foundation. But how did she get my email address? As a Democrat I think I know, but how many others with good causes would be able to latch on to that list?

I was very impressed when I saw Chelsea campaigning for her mom. Still impressed. What an intelligent, nice, very together young woman. She's a credit to her Mom and Dad. I'm sure they are proud!

I've met Chelsea at a few functions over the years, and she is a lovely, personable and intelligent person.

How could Clinton not have a good presidency? He really didnt stand for anything, he would stick his finger in the wind and based on the direction thats how he governed that day. Definitely a pollster driven administration.

I'd rather him than Obama anyday.

Clinton was awesome: NAFTA, H-1b work visas, free trade with communist China, welfare reform (dismantle), banking deregulation... Wow. Clinton was awesome...for the rich.

Have you EVER listened to Bill Clinton? I guess you can't stand the idea that they almost did away with the national debt, but worried about how that would affect the rest of the world. His administration was brilliant - they had to be to keep up with him. The man is on fire... he absolutely understands - doesn't need pollsters. And now, Clinton Global Initiative an incredible international success. He drove his administration's train. Not anyone else. Though he had a crackerjack team that Obama either picked up or copied.

I am enjoying all the jokes and digs at Bill Clinton's expense below (yes, I like him), but one thing that is obvious: With all the money and fame, both Bill and Hillary have done a fantastic job with their only daughter. I know that she has the advantage of good genes and lots of money, but in the glare of so much fame and power, she has still come out as well as any parent could hope for, and better!

She embraces the 1%. She worked for a hedge fund.
04:07 PM on 10/22/2011
So... I'm sure she would support that the 1% should also pay their fair share.

enough with the "fair share" garbage....

just say you want other people to pay for your lifestyle you cannot support, but dont bring "fair" into it when they pay the lionshare of taxes as it is and half of the country pays no fed.....its a joke
10:22 AM on 10/23/2011
The 1% pay their "fair share" already, I am so sick of hearing about how the wealthy do not pay their "fair share". Especially considering most people are so ignorant they do not even understand what they are talking about. The top 1% pays 40% of the nations taxes and the bottom 40% of the nation does not pay any taxes at all. Don't you think the lower 40% should pay their "fair share"...

She is a mathematical wiz, so banking would be a natural for her. So what if she worked for a hedge fund? Hedge funds are not evil. And now she is studying public policy. Why are you so down on financially successful people?
11:58 AM on 10/23/2011
You seem to be her singular imposter? Are you paid by her future campaign.
05:09 AM on 10/24/2011
She is a math whiz? Where is her degree in mathematics? She has none. One does not have to be a math whiz to work at a bank. She has her political connections. We are down on Clinton not because she's financially successful but because she dares to bother with all this "do good for the people" farce. Like she has any idea what it's like to be part of the common people. Just watching her try to emphasize is painful enough.

The Clinton's: the biggest joke on America, since the Kennedy's. Knowingly sending toxic housing units to Haitians, is unconscionable.

Well, the rest of the world seems to think that the Clintons are doing something right... check the poll numbers... but wait... only your opinion matters, not facts...
06:46 AM on 10/23/2011
I don't make decisions about leaders based on polls or lies framed by PR agents. Over 1 million innocent Iraqi's died because of Clinton's policies, and the fact is that he sent formaldahyde laced trailers to Haiti. Hillary was responsible for the fate of the poor people of Honduras because of her ill fated coup there and her lies kill children daily. I have no interest in your opinion either, only the facts as i determine them to be, so what is your point? You go right ahead and follow the sheep over the cliff.
