Man Afraid Of Pit Bull Puppy On 'My Extreme Animal Phobia' (VIDEO)

Puppy Fear

First Posted: 10/22/11 11:13 AM ET Updated: 12/22/11 05:12 AM ET

It's become a cliche, a trite bit of lazy cartooning or children's show writing, to feature a gigantic mountain of a tough guy, intimidating to all, suffer a panic attack at sight of the tiniest, cutest little animal. A tired cross-species David and Goliath plot point, it's a gag that lost any sort of surprise comedic value years ago.

And then you see it actually happening.

Friday night, Animal Planet's "My Extreme Animal Phobia" featured the story of a 40-year old man who is terrified of pitt bulls -- even the small ones. Never mind that he looks like he could eat puppies for dinner, with his tattoos and gigantic stature; when a little pit bull comes bounding into the park, at the behest of the show's host, Dr. Zasio, he breaks into tears and tries to run.

The clip is actually a bit sad; he went through a terrible trauma in his childhood that has made him so terrified of the dog breed. Which goes to show you: the concept still isn't all that funny.

Will he get over the fear and be able to stroll in parks again? Watch and see, and learn about the back story beneath.

Gutter Mutt, Piddy, Pit Bull, Staffy, I dont care how its spelled. I see one of these "dogs" near me and I go into total defense mode. I have been attacked 3 times by these things. People are breeding them with Dalmations, hounds, labs, just about any mix these days. The shelters gas these dogs by the thousands daily because they are uncontrollable and much too strong for the average 110lbs guys and girls who own these types of monsters. I won one lawsuit after being attacked the first time and I will win again. I will sue the person, city and state wherever the attack happens and your monster will die. Have a nice day.

OMG! If you are going to report on something LEARN HOW TO SPELL!

It's Pit Bull. NOT pittbull. not Pitbull. ONE 'T' TWO separate WORDS! Also, the correct name is American Pit Bull Terrier or APBT for short.

Ugh that annoys me.

I would never laugh at someone's phobias. Cockroaches and squirrels - things we didn't have when I was growing up - both scare the jeebus out of me. The former makes sense, but the latter?
09:57 AM on 10/25/2011
I don't like dogs of any kind. I am allergic. I avoid them at all cost. I feel sorry for this man and his phobia, but would not want any DOG near me.

Poor guy. This shows how crippling phobias can be. I'm glad that he is getting some help.

You have not seen a mean dog until you meat a mean beagle. It is a very cruel thing what people do to dogs to get them to fight. Dogs were not ment to fight each other. Cutting off their ears and forced breeding of females and taking dogs from shelters for training pit bulls to fight. People who do this should be horse whipped and pulled down a dirt road by wild horses.

I dont think I plan to ever MEAT a Beagle. Yes smaller dogs can bite and the bites hurt but these bully breeds crush bones and rip nerves apart. If you die from a Beagle attack, chances are you are not very smart or strong. Just like a Beagle the instinct to hunt is strong. Pit Bulls are man made to hold and kill until death. Since these bully breeds are MADE to kill whatever they attack they should ALL be banned at least in the city. I support BSL and I donate MAJOR bucks to the animal shelters to make sure they can afford the needles they need to kill as many of these dogs as they can in one day.

The pit bull genetics have only one purpose: to kill. PERIOD

APBT who think otherwise are only fooling themselves.

"In the United States, these dogs were used as catch dogs for semi-wild cattle and hogs, to hunt, to drive livestock, and as family companions. Some have been selectively bred for their fighting prowess."

Do your research before you jump to conclusions. The only ones responsible for the "pit bull" stereotype are humans who have decided that pit bulls would make good fighting dogs and have, thus, bred SOME of them to do this. And still, it's a very low percentage of any pit bulls who are bred to fight that will actually go on to be "fighters" as pit bulls are known for their companionship to people and their loving nature. Many fighting pit bulls (including pits taken from Vick's fighting ring) have gone on to lead productive, happy, calm lives in which they cohabitate with people, other dogs, cats, etc. Some of these animals have even gone on to be therapy dogs.

Every pit bull I have ever met, with the exception of one who liked to play rough (not viciously) due to a bad owner who wasn't paying attention to their dog, has been a completely loving and amazing dog. I've seen more small dogs (Chihuahuas/Pomeranians/etc.) and larger "popular" dogs (Retrievers and Labs) that have much more aggressive tendencies than any pit bulls and I've been around a lot of dogs. My qualifications? Extreme dog lover and owner of two large dogs whom I am always taking to dog events, parks, etc.

You are so right. I was once attacked by a chihuahua. Just walking minding my own business in a residential area. This little rat ran out and bit my ankle unprovoked. Pit Bulls are getting a bad rap because of bad owners. They are actually very sweet dogs. You can pretty much take any bread and turn them into a wishes animal if you so choose to.

Furthermore...(read long post first)....

Further problems with pit bulls that put them into a bad light are these owners who think owning a pit bull is macho, but they don't know how to properly train/restrain/etc. the dog. This is bad pet ownership as can be seen with any breed, but pit bulls seem to be the ones to get a bad rap.

Research before you talk.

I would own no other dog but APBT, Loving, extremely protective, gentle, and in fact mine thinks he's a lap dog all 95 pounds of him. Oh just don't come into the house uninvited.

Probably no one is going to remember this, but it was a Pit Bull that was the model for The Buster Brown Shoe Company and also for Nipper the RCA Dog. They weren't always thought of as mean, but once a certain segment of the population began using them as fighting dogs the breed continued and it was breed into to fight. So now you have a bad dog. Not the dogs fault, but just look who as a rule has these dogs and you will see why they are now not a good to have.
09:06 AM on 10/25/2011
Nipper was a mixed breed dog.

Nipper was an English Fox Terrier/Bull Terrier mix.
