Parents For Occupy Wall Street Family Sleepover: 500 Parents And Children Gather In Zuccotti Park

Kids Occupy Wall Street

Baby geniuses? More like baby activists.

Thirty-five days into New York City's Occupy Wall Street protest, a new type of crowd -- 500 parents with their children -- gathered in Zuccotti Park. The event, sponsored by Parents for Occupy Wall Street, was a family sleepover that started at 4 p.m. on Oct. 21 and ran through 11 a.m. on Oct. 22. It came complete with crafts, storybooks and ... politics.

The reason for a sleepover? On parentsforoccupywallstreet.com, organizers say:

The group's goal is to raise awareness of the diversity of people supporting the movement. In the press, there is an assumption that the only people supporting the movement are solely homeless or unemployed ... With even a short visit to Liberty Plaza, you will see all walks of life supporting the movement, including middle class working families.

Earlier on, parents included their children without an explicit invitation. Rahul Hamid told TODAY Moms what it was like to bring his two-year-old daughter, and his reason for doing so was similar to last night's group:

I wanted to come to show that ordinary people with families also had some sympathy for the protester's sentiments about the economy.

Others felt less confident about involving their kids in the protests. Babble blogger Carolyn Castiglia posted about being "reticent to go downtown and join the fray because I thought it might not be a friendly place to bring my 6-year-old."

Indeed, last night's sleepover, scheduled originally for October 14th, was postponed because all protesters faced a possible eviction for park cleaning that night.

Parents for OWS put extra security measures in place. They created a contained "Child and Family Only" area within Liberty Plaza that was accessible via an ID-required checkpoint only. Protesters who had been involved in Occupy Wall Street -- both parents and non-parents -- volunteered to help with protection, clad in neon yellow tees.

HuffPost Parents spoke to one mother who had been at Occupy Wall Street since its inception, and expressed discontent with the bureaucratic structure of all of this; she refused to participate. However, most of the families we spoke to were supportive of any extra precautions.

"I think it's good," said Oscar Owens, dad of Asa, 2 1/2. "It makes it a little easier to keep track of [the kids] because [the area] is kinda fenced in. It just enables people to [participate] more."

Once inside the designated area, parents and children interacted freely -- a mini-community for the night. Organizers urged families to come down bundled up (temperatures dropped below 50 degrees) and to bring a stroller, carrier or yoga mat for maximum comfort. There was a sing-along, art projects, pizza, a bedtime story, even meditation.

When we asked parents who participated why they wanted to bring children to a protest, everyone voiced similar motivations. "I think it's good for kids to participate in democracy," said Megan Davidson, mother of two, ages 4 and 9. "This is what democracy looks like."

View photos from the sleepover below, and let us know if you would bring a child to a protest in our poll.

Quick Poll

Would you take your kids down to participate in a protest?

Absolutely! It's an amazing opportunity to expose your kids to activism.

Only for an organized event like this.

Depends on the protest.

No way. Protests aren't a place for children.

As a parent it is very difficult not to feel protective and at times overly cautious.

I would challenge everyone here to actually go to one of the occupy protests to see for themselves what's really going on in their town/city. They may be surprised to see some of their friends and neighbors there.

Unless you see it with your own eyes, you have no clue what you are saying about the movement. Just because Steve Doooooocy or Rush Limboo said it, doesn't make it true.

Back in 91 when Bush senior was ratcheting up the winds of war There were several marches across the nation
we brought our 5 yo daughter and marched near the front of about 5000 citizens and while the chant went something like 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 we don't want yer f@#$%ng war
our girl showed up at day care the next day marching and expressing 1234 we donn't want yer funky war!
It has been our battle cry ever since!

I'm SO proud that my 12yo daughter INSISTED on going down for the sleepover and her father was willing to brave the cold night to take her. I wish your photos showed more of the diversity of both age and ethnicity that was present. I know little blond kids make everyone say "ahhhh," but there were older kids and a lot more kids of color out there.

Just like most of this world, there are places I am willing to take my kids, and places I'm not willing to. It just depends. My kids have been to protests, but not all protests are child-friendly.

They are so cute ! this is a inspiring story and i think its good that they brought their children to be a part of this worldwide movement. This is a educational event to show their kids from a early age to be good activist and so that they can learn how to fight against inequality or whatever they think is wrong and to stand up for what they believe in and let their voice be heard . If occupy wall st protesters were wild, ill-mannered rioting mobs like some people claim then why would they bring their children there? doesnt make sense .Obviously most of the occupy wall st protesters are upstanding citizens and they accept everyone and they have a caring and friendly atmosphere and encourage others who feel the same to join them and take part in this inspiring moment in history, this can also benefit their future and when the goverment and ceo's of wall st and other places do what they do these families are the first to suffer.I admire occupy wall st protesters for their determination and motivation and the way they united and look out for each other like family, alot of people especially wall st can learn something from them like their display of humanitarianism .

I can't wait for the little B's to start bullying the Libby Lib. kids that all live down there, so their Libby lib. parents can start calling up the comm. board people to call City hall. That's how they play, it's OK until u upset their world. Play those drums louder, please. Nothing better than libs. bullying other libs.

NY Post reported today that violent crime has skyrocketed since OWS. Shootings are up 154%. Officials claim it's due to police being pulled from high crime areas to OWS.

Woohoo, quoting the NY Post, of the wiretapping empire News Corp. Way to bolster your argument!

There are too many police present at OWS. So, the obvious answer is to cut back on the unnecessarily large police presence at a peaceful non-violent protest. Neither the city nor the post get to pass the buck on to OWS for this, as this is the city's mistake.

Children absolutely do not belong in places like that. In fact, I don't think anyone should be exposed places like that since organizers of at least one of the protests came out with this outrage: http://www.anti-strib.com/component/content/article/39-blog/2107.html

So if I understand this correctly. They exposed their children to people who have been documented to going nude, having sex in public view, using and selling dope, stealing from each other, crapping on cars, swearing, not bathing, and refusing lawful orders from the police. Great parenting skills.

Fortunately, OWS considered it necessary to "put extra security measures in place ... [it's] kinda fenced in" to protect children from other OWS occupiers. So far, the kids here appear relatively safe.

Others haven't been so lucky. To list just a few:
REPORT: 14-year-old girl sexually assaulted at 'Occupy Dallas'...
http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2011/10/24/accusations-of-teen-runaway-sexual-activity-at-occupy-dallas/

Offenses v children ; http://www.komonews.com/news/local/132064518.html ;
Kidnapping/rape : http://cleveland.cbslocal.com/2011/10/18/occupy-cleveland-protester-alleges-she-was-raped/
"Two police officers ... had to be hospitalized Saturday. One had a head injury." -- CBS:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/10/15/ap/business/main20120961.shtml , etc.

Nothing like that occurred at Tea Party or Beck events, many of which dwarfed all OWS crowds combined. The media generally love OWS, despite their record and despise TPs despite their exemplary behavior, with only isolated individual exceptions. Nevertheless, of OWS supporters, 64% are Democrats, only 22% are independents and just 14 percent are Republicans.

Independents don't like OWS (a potential disaster for Democrats if violence increases), and even many Democrats also dislike OWS. And, various TPs contributed to the widespread GOP victories during 2010, so it's not just idle speculation. The TPs help the GOP, while OWS poses a potential serious threat.

Oh, yeah. If you get raped at Occupy Baltimore, organizers actively discourage victims from going to the police, preferring to let their "security" people handle it. "Counseling will be made available." http://www.anti-strib.com/component/content/article/39-blog/2107.html

Because they already have a bad name and they dont want one bad seed to mess it up for the rest of them , i think they should throw out all the trouble- making good for nothing people that are in the midst of this movement in history so that they wont mess it up for the people who are there for a good cause

These OWS protesters must be making the astro-turf TP nervous, otherwise you wouldn't be going out of your way to discredit the movement with lies and distortions. Made me nervous when TP showed up at political rallies armed. No,they didn't shoot anyone but that was because the normal people stayed away from those nuts!

For real. Note that not a single person in these threads has been addressing the issues raised by the movement. They're merely whining about stereotypes and throwing out ad hominem attacks. Thankfully, it's actually helping, rather than hurting, us. :)

So, moonbats, Pelosi, Frank, Inmelt, Obama all support drug dealers, people who abuse children and give them booze, drugged and stamping on our flag----now that's unpatriotic! Pooping in the streets. They are making a mess on public property and WHO is going to pay for the cleanup?

Firts of all i dont where you get your information from because that is not what they are doing at least not here because i have been to zaccotti park and people there are not doing anything of what you described so maybe somewhere else where they are having this movement those things are happening but dont believe everything you hear or read on the media .Number one If it was like you say it is people wouldnt bring their children there . Two you said who is going to pay for the clean up ?, they are cleaning after themselves! There are people who work there too so they are also paying the city taxes which should go to clean public parks. All of them are not drug addicts or doing the things you said, that might be a small percentage of the protesters there who do that and they are probably not a part of the protest so dont judge everyone by a few bad apples in the mix!.Those are probably some homeless people or party poopers who are doing the things you mentioned. Separate fact from fiction

Apparently some people love having their elected representives sell out to lobbists and corporations.
This kind of person I have no use for at all, because they are so easy to see through. I fully support the OWS because at least they are smart enough to see that something isn't right and want to right it!

08:24 PM on 10/24/2011
No. To me the teaparty and it's organization smacked of even more politics as usual. This movement is totally different, and maybe the lack of organization is what makes them seem more genuine to me. BTW I am a vet and so were many of my family in early wars.

The TP was ,is and always will be a top down astro-turf group that is too dumb to realize they are being used by corporate America to further their agenda. They are just the same right wing extreme evangelical christians and groups that support a weak federal government supported by states that function more or less like independent countries. All the better to bring back the good old days of every type of minority discrimination, poverty for the elderly, women will once again be second class citizens with no control over their own reproductive choices,no public education for the masses and definitely no healthcare for anyone but the rich. I wouldn't support the TP on a bet!
