Church Wrestles With Growth of Wisconsin Shrine to Mary

CHAMPION, Wis. (RNS) Philip and Barbara Hesselbein came to the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help to pray for a grandson who has an inoperable brain tumor.

Darlene Searcy prayed for her family and for herself; she has cancer.

Mary Spakowicz, who also has cancer, came "because God will hear me here."

The afflicted and the faithful have long made pilgrimages to the quiet country site where Belgian immigrant Adele Brise said in 1859 that she saw the Virgin Mary three times. For the past few years, maybe 30 or 50 people had trickled in daily to visit the chapel, Brise's grave and the candlelit crypt that marks the site of the apparition.

That changed in December, when Bishop David Ricken of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Green Bay certified after investigations by three theologians that Brise had indeed seen a beautiful lady in white who said she was the "queen of heaven."

That made the shrine, which is a mile from the unincorporated town of Champion, the only official site in the United States where Mary is said to have appeared.

Now there's a steady flow of traffic into the recently enlarged gravel parking lot. Cars, vans and buses bring 500 people -- and often many more -- here daily. License plates from Ohio, Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana were spotted one recent weekday.

A new building houses much-needed restrooms.

A former boarding school on the site is being refurbished to house two priests recently assigned full time to the shrine.

"I knew that there would be some increase in interest" after he certified Brise's vision, Ricken says. "I wasn't sure how wide it would be, how broad it would be."

Our Lady of Good Help attracts far fewer visitors than international Marian shrines such as France's Lourdes, which draws 5 million a year, or Mexico's Our Lady of Guadalupe, which has double that.

Still, Ricken expects the number of visitors to continue to rise and says the diocese is trying to figure out how to accommodate them without losing "the simplicity of that beautiful shrine and the peace of the place."

The farming area around the shrine is changing already.

"If the rumors are right, it's going to look like downtown Chicago pretty soon," says Louie Gomand, who owns a farm adjacent to the shrine.

A farm stand on his property sells vegetables and water to visitors. A sunflower costs 50 cents and a gourd 35 cents. A handwritten sign reads "bus specials." There's a lot more traffic, he says, but he has no complaints.

Neither does Kelli Vissers, 34. She and her husband, David, 38, own two buildings in Champion. "Since the shrine happened" in December, "the traffic has quadrupled through here," she says.

They have converted a small trailer into the mobile On the Way Cafe. Kelli Vissers said she hopes to cater meals for tourists and turn one of the buildings into a bed-and-breakfast and the other into a full-scale cafe.

Barb Cornette, 58, who grew up in the area and now helps run a dairy farm a couple of miles from the shrine, says some residents have mixed feelings about its growing popularity.

"Traffic has increased tremendously," she says. "Some of the area farmers that are retired want to sell their land ... for possibly a hotel, a restaurant. They're looking for the gold mine, unfortunately," she says.

For decades, Cornette says, the shrine was visited mostly by local people. "We felt like this was our chapel," she says, "and now we have to share it with everybody -- which is OK if they wouldn't try to change it" by adding restaurants and other tourist accoutrements.

The shrine retains its qualities despite the growing number of visitors, says caretaker Karen Tipps. "What you remember about the experience in the crypt, the beautiful sense of peace, is not different," she says.

Visitors agree. "There's a special presence of Our Lady here," says Barbara Hesselbein, 63, who lives in Brookfield, Wis. "It's very peaceful."

Spakowitz, who lives in Green Bay, says, "No matter how many people are around you, you feel like you're the only one."

Cristina Ortiz, 32, also from Green Bay, emerged from the shrine in tears. "You feel that special connection," she says.

"I felt something," says Darlene Searcy, 76, who lives in Plainfield, Ill. "I'm practically in tears."

Ricken acknowledges that the shrine is experiencing "growing pains" and he says Cornette is right: Our Lady of Good Help no longer belongs only to local residents. "You've had her for 150-some years," he says, "and now it's time to share her with the world."

I love that statue. I can't tell whether her eyes are open and without pupils, or if they're closed. Makes it all the more alluring to look at.

This is about 50 miles from me. It is a shame, really... it was a pretty area. I have had the misfortune of being at another site in the world where Mary is said to have appeared - Knock, Ireland. All Knock is now is a small town of nothing but religious junk stores... seriously, about 20 of them in a row, all selling the same plastic stuff. The headline for this story should read "Church Wrestles with Increase in Public Gullibility and Desperation".

"Two priests have been assigned full time to the shrine."

Talk about a cushy job! Where can I get a gig like that? What do they actually do? How much does it cost for their salary and housing?

I remember perusing a book by Carl Sagan, "The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark." I read some of his books about science too, and they were great, but this one I found kind of depressing. He would go on and on about how it was so not all right for some poor powerless woman in South America to go see a tarot card reader. He felt personally responsible like the poor woman was being scammed or something, and it was his duty to cast the light of rationality on her life. I found this rather unbelievable, coming from a man who wrote a book about the brain.

To me, if you read the neuroscience the conclusion is inescapable that life is irrational. We do what we feel like doing, however rationally well-informed the decision might be. Reason is a tool of the evolutionary agenda that drives us and it's not what determines our responses. Sometimes having to have reasons is like death. Sometimes the decision isn't coming, so we go see the tarot card reader. It's not like we mindlessly give up whatever power we have. Maybe something that is said will resonate in the subconscious decider. Big deal. It's not like there's a RIGHT ANSWER. Lighten up, Carl.

So go hang with Mary and see what it gets you.

I'd be more interested if "the church" certified that it's employees wouldn't be buggering little boys any more. Now THAT would be a revelation...

Theres no greater way to provoke God to anger, than worshiping a hunk of cement.

Thats what the Bible says anyway. The most hated Book on the HuffPost.

If a lot of people hate the Bible is because of people like you who misuse it. You throw biblical verses at people without having yourself a solid biblical education. You are citing Exodus 20:4 and ignoring Exodus 25:18-22 where God commands to make sculptures of two cherubims (angels) for the Ark of the Covenant. It is clear that God does not condemn statues but idols. In the oldest Christian churches (Catholic, Orthodox, Coptic, etc.) the use of statues and/or icons was approved for inspiration and devotion not for worship.

Your drunken on the wine of Babylon friend.

Babylon. Thats the place were they also rationalized statue worship.

Hey, I don't care if you do it. Gods the one you'll have to explain it to.
You guys ripped out the second commandment, and the 4th and you split the 10th ( don't covet thy nieghbors wife into 2 commandments, Because it left you short. Thats blasphemy. Calling yourself above God.

We are all free to choose. We are all getting either the seal of God, or the mark of the beast. Your go to get the latter if you don't accept the truth.

Nobody worships the statue nor do they worship mary...they revere and venerate the spirit of Mary who is represented by the statue. Nothing wrong with that as far as I can see, and no different than people wrapping themselves in say a flag or a cause.

and why do you revere and venerate the spirit of Mary?

You revere and venerate someone who isn't God, or even Jesus Christ. Can't you see the problem in that?

Apparition of 1859? They sure took their time about it.

This is how the Catholic Church decides whether or not to approve private revelations such as this one:
"While no one can actually prove a supernatural occurrence, there are other factors that can be considered. The Church judges apparitions on the basis of their consistency with Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition and the teachings of the Church, any subsequent spiritual benefits in the lives of people, and whether there is anything in the life of the seer that detracts from the credibility of the account. A decree with moral certainty approves apparitions as worthy of belief by the Christian faithful; however, there is no obligation for belief implied in the approval." (http://www.catholic.org/hf/faith/story.php?id=39511)
You are free to believe or disbelieve, to pray or to mock such things. But Our Blessed Mother appears for you as well as for me. She appears to ask us to pray, fast, and convert our hearts, to draw closer to her Son. She doesn't use the term "atheist" or even "unbeliever" when she asks prayers for those of you who do not believe. She asks prayers for all those "who do not yet know the love of God." Mary has no agenda. She ony points us to her Son, saying now, as ever, "Do whatever he tells you." John 2:5

She also apparently told this woman she was "Queen of Heaven." Honestly now, can you imagine Mary, the mother of Jesus of Nazareth uttering something like that?
11:34 PM on 10/27/2011
Yes. I can imagine it, because that is what she is. Mary, the Mother of Jesus, our King, is the Queen mother. In biblical times, the king's mother and not his wife ruled as queen - read the story of King Solomon.

Mary herself, as humble as she was, upon becoming the Mother of God sang His praises, because she recognized the greatness of what had happened to her. She was forever transformed, and when she heard Elizabeth's greeting, she replied: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior/ For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness/ behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed/ The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.” (Luke 1:46-49)

All generations shall call me blessed... Why do so many hesitate?

Also read Revelations chapter 12, "A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth…."

A woman, standing on the moon, with 12 stars on her head for a crown... have you seen the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe? Praise be to God for His gift of this beautiful "Mother of all living", the new Eve.

How come the other saints and stuff never show up? What agent does Mary use that makes her so special?
06:52 PM on 10/28/2011
Our Lady's special agent is her Son Jesus. Jesus gave her to his "beloved disciple" from the cross, and that disciple did not hesitate to take her as his own mother. The other beloved disciples of Christ (us) continue to take Mary as mother. John Paul II’s motto was "Totus Tuus" which means "Totally yours" and he dedicated his papacy to the Mother of God. How do we distinguish what is of God from what is artificial or the evil imposter? "By their fruits you will know them." Anyone familiar with John Paul II will acknowledge the good fruit of his life and work.
Other saints have also appeared, starting with Moses and Elijah on the Mount of the Transfiguration (Mt. 17). St. Joan of Arc conversed with St. Michael, St. Catherine of Alexandria, and St. Margaret. In Fatima, Portugal, the angel of Portugal appeared to the children before Mary did to prepare them and taught them prayers for the conversion of sinners. At the miracle of the sun Fatima on Oct 13, 1917, witnessed by over 70,000 people and reported in the secular, anti-Christian press, St. Joseph appeared holding the child Jesus. Jesus himself has appeared at times. In one such apparition, Jesus brought the Divine Mercy message to a Polish nun, now St. Faustina Kowalska. In our doubting, unfaithful world, these visions helps us to know how much God loves us, so that we may believe and be saved.

So a woman in a white dress says she's "queen of heaven". Then, 150 years later some theologions (bet they were catholic!) "investigated" and said "She sure is!" and people believe them???

And now everyone in the neighborhood is going to make a buck off of this. Kind of a "build it and they will come" deal ....

I live in Wisconsin and, trust me, we all aren't that gullible!

Only religious people believe in this kind of non-sense. People who truly believe in God with all their heart don't need idols. There is no "queen of heaven". Nowhere, and I mean nowhere in the Bible is there a queen of heaven. Mary, was just a person used by God. Just like every other person in the Bible. They all died and will one day stand before judgement.

So, it it's not in the Bible you don't believe it? Surely, then, you can find a verse in Scripture that states that principle. Let me save you some time, however: it's not there. So, in reality, when you believe that, you believe something that isn't in the Bible and violate your own principle. Then there's that whole problem of what constitutes the Bible, since there is no divine table of contents included in Scripture. So, according to your standards, you can't even believe the Bible because it isn't biblical.

That's one of the most intelligent posts on this board. All the rest is just people trying to preach and sell their particular "brand". If they'd put more of their energy into actually being "Christ-like" as in feeding the poor, healing the sick, loving their brother like themselves, etc., our world would be a better place. Not too many of the "self-proclaimed" Christians are out there doing that. It's more hot air than anything.
