Chinese Toddler Death: Two Arrests Made In Killing (GRAPHIC VIDEO)

First Posted: 10/23/11 01:58 PM ET Updated: 12/23/11 05:12 AM ET

Chinese police have arrested two drivers accused of running over a 2-year-old toddler who died a week after she was hit.

The incident sparked controversy last week. 18 passing pedestrians and cyclists ignored the little girl before she was helped, ABC reported.ABC News reported that 57-year-old Chen Xianmei moved Wang Yue out of the road and called for help after the girl was hit by vehicles in Foshan, Guangdong province.

Xianmei has been criticized by many in China who say she only helped Yue Yue because she wanted publicity.

Wang Yue's mother has refuted those claims.

The case will most likely proceed to trial.

As a fourth generation Chinese/Japanese-American, I have never been fully proud of my Chinese heritage and this is exactly why. In the Chinese culture, it is considered morally acceptable to be concerned only with yourself and your interests. In fact, there is a Chinese proverb that illustrates this mindset. "Each person should sweep the snow from his own doorsteps and should not fret about the frost on his neighbor’s roof.” Luckily, being exposed to Western norms and culture has improved my moral compass as I hope it has for other Chinese-Americans.

We have the same problem here in the US. There is an ugly part of human nature (self-centered indifference) that knows no ethnic nor national boundaries. This happens everywhere.

ncc1701, you'd be surprised how many here would turn away from someone in need even if it was a kid! How many get involved with child abuse? Few. If they reported it, they'd go nameless for fear of retaliation. How many have ever run into a burning building rescuing? Few! And what are they called? Heroes! It should be normal behavior not an award giver. How many report criminals without a reward? NONE! How many rubber neck a car accident but never stop? Too many! They don't want to be sued. Heck, I had a guy walk away from shoveling my driveway because he wouldn't have gotten paid because I had no money! I'd help anyone paid or not. How many Americans demand that corporal punishment be put back in schools? Too many! They think a teacher hitting a child is just fine and dandy. How many parents think spanking their children instead of talking is better? Too many! How many parents give their kids up? Just look at Children's Services who have given up and abused children! How many have said illegals' children don't deserve the same education? Too many! They don't care about those kids because they hate the parents because of fear mongering! Don't tell me China is any worse than us when it comes to caring about children!

Funny ......people in America speak with no clue to how things are in China. China has a long history and tradition of women having no value .....At one time if you gave birth to a baby and it was a girl, you were allowed to kill it.....No Problem. It is ingrained in the minds, consciously or not. and secondly......... You are talking about a country that is vastly overpopulated 1.3 Billion people, The largest country in the world........Families are limited BY LAW, to only ONE child ! Do you really think a female toddler in China has any status or rights to a male driver? China is still the Second country in world where Female Infanticide is a problem, with India being #1. In their minds it was like hitting a dog. The only reason the Chinese Government is doing anything is because of the world opinion and it went viral. 18 people walked past the child, NOT STOPPING TO HELP, before she was run over AGAIN ! To me that says alot about the attitudes of Chinese people and the country.

I cannot believe they are now criticizing the old woman who helped the poor baby saying all she wanted was publicity. What kind of twisted mindset do you have to have to believe such a thing? RIP Yue Yue..
01:11 PM on 10/24/2011
At least she has peace. Her parents should have been there, the next step is to identify the passersby and arrest them. The child was holding out her arms for help, it is clear as day in the video and she was less than an animal. The world needs to give it's head a shake and realize that all children are precious, I am going to hug my grandson.

Gee what else make the U.S. so 'perfect' compared to China when it comes to girls. We do nothing to stop little girls who are made up as street walkers who are put into toddler beauty pageants exploiting them, men use women AND underaged girls for prostitution, we laud the sex sells concept of Advertising using women, women are expected to be the cooks and maids in marriage, we tell girls that it's not ladylike to fight, , women and girls whom people are mad at are called the "B" and "C" word, men are allowed to be ticked off, women they're accused of having a PMS attack, we lament no discipline in our children and many want corporal punishment put back in schools thinking that children deserve to be whooped, parents have no problem using spanking instead of talking, children are expected to respect parents but they're rarely given it. We treat children and women no better in this country and we have the gall to criticize anothers' culture? When we're perfect when it comes to how children, women and girls are treated here, when we stop making women victims of crime, then we'll have some ammunition to criticize China or any other country.

Wow. Are you ever off base. Infanticide is nothing new in any nation and does occur right under our noses. We don't condone it. We find murderous and abusive parents disgusting and loathsome. In China there are nearly 40 million MISSING girls. I don't mean missing as in they wandered off or were kidnapped. I mean missing as in drowned, dropped at roadsides, sold, left at orphanages where there is nearly no financial support and certainly not enough staffing to look after them - they usually die there. Sadly, drowning at birth would have been an easier death for most of the orphanage girls.

Lament the disfunction in our society if you will but you cannot even come close to comparing life over here with life over there.

Off base BadKitty? Nawww I don't think so. We're far from perfect and until we are then we can all be self-righteous. China has missing 400 million girls? Well how about all the missing American girls and women? A local girl has been missing for 7 years and people gave up looking for her. She was kidnapped and she was a teen. Oh and our children aren't dropped off in Children's Services because they're not wanted, boys and girls? Look, I'm not saying China doesn't have it's flaws when it comes to this, BadKitty, but we're not exactly blemish free when it comes to kids whatever gender and girl children aren't treated well here. Our dysfunction plays a big role, BadKitty in comparison in that we treat women, girls and children like trash as well. But it's more fun for Americans to condemn other countries and don't clean up the messes here.

Sure, little girls in beauty pageants is just the same as running over one and leaving her to die. Sheesh.

It's not about 'so perfect' or any comparison at all. It's appropriate to show compassion and sympathy and hope that the outpouring will cause some change in China- for the next little girl.

Oh I see TggerJen. So making up 3, 4 and five year-olds as hookers isn't as bad? Holy moley! Oh but when that little beauty pageant toddler is killed what will happen? The same as Jon Bennet Ramsey! Her parents who never did her any harm is blamed! Talk about "Sheesh".

Yes it is about 'so perfect' and comparisons! That's the problem with Americans. They're so quick to judge and condemn, but quick to dismiss THEIR flaws when it comes to the crappy way children are treated. And there are plenty of American parents who kill their kids. I just read on Huffpost two parents who kept their kid who had seizures in a locked room for 5 years and starved him. When they finally found him the kid was bed ridden and weighed 37lbs! Oh yeah. Of course China is worse because we fear and hate monger them and I'm sick of it! We do some pretty sick things to the children we claim to love! China will change herself when she choose to, NOT because Americans dictate as they usually do, and China will change herself when she choose to, NOT because of any other country's outrage. As I said, when Americans treat their children better then we can judge. But we're too in love with ourselves and refuse to acknowledge our flaws.

Apart from pooping in the streets, drowning baby girls, allowing toxic poisons into baby food and toothpaste and pet foods, and cheating in the last Olympics, The Chinese are one hot mess. Emotional robots, with no regard for human life. Everyone is disposable it seems. Punish them by not buying Chinese made products. I know- that might mean living without a stitch of clothing or household products, but eventually something needs to change. These people are sick. It took a mother's love ( another woman ) to act upon this injured child and take her out of harm's way. As backward as CHina is, it seems incredulous to even think they have prosecutable laws that would get someone in trouble for a Good Samaritan act.

My question is, did a person film this, or was it just a camera that was installed at that paticular site? I hope that it was just a camera that was installed and not a person that filmed this and did nothing to prevent this tragedy. May this precious child rip.

I suspect the only reason this case will make it to trial is due to World exposure and Egg on the face of the Chinese Government. Otherwise, I would be highly suspect if there really is a public 'Outcry' in China, due to the Government oppression of News and tight regulation of the Media.
If the perpetrators are tried and sentenced, It'll probably be more for making the Government look bad rather than for callously killing a little girl. It's a whole different World over there.

You're all appalled by the Chinese culture of wanting boys more than girls? In the U.S. we blame women rape victims, we expect women to put up with domestic abuse, we try to dictate to women about abortion. We judge women on their looks and weight, women aren't paid the same as men in the work force, women are always forced to choose between career and family where men aren't, women are expected to shoulder the complete responsibility of contraception, we think of single mothers as not good parents but we don't care that deadbeat dads don't support their kids.

We interfere in other countries and we constantly war, we have nuclear missiles in silos, we had no trouble bombing Nagasiki and Hiroshima not caring about men women and CHILDREN and used war as an excuse. On many Huffpost boards people get off on insulting people because civility seem to be dead. We won't get involved helping people unless we're paid or in the case of being a Good Samaritan, we're terrified of the cost of helping rather than just helping because it's the right thing to do. We enjoy waterboarding using excuses yet complain how bad the other 'side' is. We murder each other every day, steal each others' identities, rape, rob, kidnap, kill molest and starve children, we have little sympathy for poor children, we buy and sell children calling it 'adoption, we're homophobic and xenophobic. And we have a problem with how the Chinese are?
10:21 AM on 10/24/2011
Yes, the above happens - but it is not the majority. I believe our country still believes in the "right thing to do" and we still have individuals who believe in morals and rights. China has taken that away from their people. This country is still the greatest country on this earth and to say any different is not American.

Pretty Good comment for a BadKitty! Faved BIG!
09:20 AM on 10/24/2011
Riding in a rented car on a twisting mountain road in southern China, we came upon a van that had just overturned with people and children crawling out. There were a couple just laying there while others bloodied and struggling to move away from the wreckage. We just passed by without even a comment by the driver. Shocked, I asked the driver to turn around so we could help. He said no, because in China, by becoming involved you can somehow be accused of either causing or contributing to the accident. After 4 years of living in China I found that not getting involved was deeply ingrained in the culture.
The actions we take for granted in the US don't seem to apply in China. Logic is turned on it's head it seems at times. "When in Rome..." difficult but true.

This is a mistake Americans and most from Western Cultures always make about foreign cultures. That people from all cultures think like us, have the same values as us, have the same respect for life, the came compassion, the same altruism. Nothing could be furtrher from the truth. There are cutures who think that it is not only entertaining to watch somebody being beaten to death but quite amusing aas well. There are cultures that feel it is not only entertaining, but educational as well for the people to watch public executions and beheadings. There are still cultures that have no moral issues about one person owning another. And those cultures like this example that evidently feel that it is a person's "kharma" to be killed in an accident, so they don't get involved.
