Food Day: October 24 Marks The First Annual Food Day, Created By Center For Science In The Public Interest

In preparation for the first annual Food Day, created by the Center For Science In The Public Interest (CSPI), HuffPost Food showcased the "Terrible 10" and the "Terrific 10." The CSPI selected these aspects of food culture for the large way that they affect society, either for the worse or better.

Throughout the weekend and today, hundreds of events have been planned across the country to support Food Day's goals, which are:

  • Reduce diet-related disease by promoting safe, healthy foods
  • Support sustainable farms & limit subsidies to big agribusiness
  • Expand access to food and alleviate hunger
  • Protect the environment & animals by reforming factory farms
  • Promote health by curbing junk-food marketing to kids
  • Support fair conditions for food and farm workers

The events include dinners featuring local foods, crowd-sourced potlucks and forums that discuss the various food issues outlined above. Make sure to check out the event list to see if there are events happening in your area. Or, create your own. Make sure to let us know what you're doing in the comments.

Check back tomorrow for photos and highlights of some of the events!

While it's great to think about consumer choices, "food day" shouldn't just be one day a year. Every day is “Food Day” to America's farmers and ranchers, according to Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan- http://youtu.be/bGq21MAX1eM. I agree with her- we should celebrate the hard work of our nation’s farmers and ranchers, large and small, organic and conventional. I encourage you to visit http://www.realfarmersrealfood.com to watch video farm tours and learn more about how today’s farmers and ranchers rely on technology and tradition to meet our needs.

In celebration of REAL FOOD and the farmers who provide it for the health and nourishment of our bodies today. I do not take America's God-given bountiful food supply lightly. As Hippocrates said: "Let Food Be Your Medicine." It's our first line of defense in Prevention of illness. Congratulations to all who responsibly grow and produce the healthy, unadulterated, foods for our table. (You know who you are!) :-)
