Further harrowing images of the final moments of former Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi have been made public.

GlobalPost has obtained video, allegedly shot on the cellphone of one of the rebel fighters who captured Gaddafi, that shows him being attacked by one of his captors. Various reports have questioned whether the former Libyan leader was sodomized with what appears to be a stick or metal rod in the opening moments of the video. The video shows an attacker striking Gaddafi with the object. The camera pulls away quickly afterward.

Libya's interim leader, Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, has promised an investigation into the exact circumstances of how Gaddafi met his demise. Initial reports suggest Gaddafi was killed in the crossfire as his supporters clashed with revolutionary forces seizing control of his hometown of Sirte.

But Abdul-Jalil raised a new possibility on Monday, suggesting that Gaddafi could have been killed by his own supporters to prevent him from implicating them in past misdeeds under his regime.

"Let us question who has the interest in the fact that Gaddafi will not be tried. Libyans want to try him for what he did to them, with executions, imprisonment and corruption," he said. "Free Libyans wanted to keep Gaddafi in prison and humiliate him as long as possible. Those who wanted him killed were those who were loyal to him or had played a role under him, his death was in their benefit."

It is widely believed that the videos circulating online show the Libyan leader after he was captured by rebel forces alive, but in a bloodied and confused state. A series of images released by international news agencies appear to show Gaddafi's corpse with a bullet wound to the head (See the images here: WARNING - GRAPHIC CONTENT)

The United Nations has called for an investigation into the circumstances of Gaddafi's death.

CLARIFICATION: A previous version of this story indicated that Gaddafi was sodomized. The text has been updated to reflect questions over the extent of that portion of the attack.

One Day We will get the truth to this story..
Bush lied to us and took us to war...in Iraq.
The truth always come out...
I have just one question ..If the UN and NATO care so much about civilians how come it allows the Libyan rebels to ethnic cleanse and lynch people in Tawergha, a small town 25 miles to the south of Misrata ?

The recolonization of Libya has began....
They say alot Al-Qaeda flags have been flying high in Libya..
Libyan rebel ethnic cleansing and lynching of black people...
In a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, journalist Sam Dagher pointed out the obvious fact that the Libyan war is aggravating ethnic tensions in that country.
The article talks about the fate of Tawergha, a small town 25 miles to the south of Misrata, inhabited mostly by black Libyans,

People - this is very often the fate of brutal dictators!
Your people get sick at your tyranny - and you either get out of get killed!

If anything, this should be a message to wanna-be-dictators!

There is no justification for this.

Can anyone explain why US EU France etc got involved with this? Wasn't similar civilian injustice happening in other countries? It seams like we got involved for a gain of wealth and possibly power... Does anyone know facts? What did Gadaffi do wrong? I am just starting to research this. Thank you

What did Gadhafi do wrong? Oh, just being the head of a sovereign nation that happens to have an appreciable amount of oil (mostly supplying the France and Italy); creating a water aquifer that will supply Libya with water for hundreds of years to come, trying to set up a gold currency for African nations, and most important, refusing to borrow money from the International Monetary Fund; thereby remaining independent of the IMF. All of which made him a potential threat to the US, France, Italy and other western nations since there was no way to control him or his country's wealth. How's that for starters?

Wow, it is breathtaking how dumb you are.

You do realize that this whole thing was started by the LIBYANS THEMSELVES?!? It was the will of the people of Libya that Gaddafi go.

The US, France and italy weren't the ones who tracked him down in the drainage pipe and sodomized him and killed him - those were Libyans.

The UN only got involved to prevent him from wiping out an entire city of (mostly) unarmed people or "rats" (as he called them).

As far as what he "did wrong"...there is WAAAAY too much to list in the space provided here. However, talking to the families of Pan Am 103 would be a good place to start.

It's like all of the skeletons in his closet found him at the same time, and one of them had a camera-phone.

I always wonder why news editors refer to videos like this as "graphic." If it's potentially offensive, say "potentially offensive." Every video is "graphic"; that's how you SEE it.
12:49 AM on 10/30/2011
This just goes to show how sick and disgusting "human" beings can be. The men in this video are down right evil. I don't condone what Gaddafi has done all these years, but that doesn't excuse the barbarism of these "people"

Yes it does

Please, Sir, justify your claim.

We should thank Sarkozy, Cameron and Harper for this, without their help to these rebels we could nt have watched this... (irony)

The way how one treats its enemies says a lot about himself
11:53 PM on 11/02/2011
you should treat your enimies as they have treated you. No better and no worse. So he got what was coming to him.

I have never been a Goddafi fan, seeing him dead was my hope for years.
Men are not all good are bad. I remember Goddafi destroying agriculture in Libya when he first came to power.
But as a old man he was bring water, buy a pipeline to his nation. Which would have been, a wonder of the world. And raised his people out of poverty.
Thats the kind of thing a leader should do for those he governs.
That would have given him praise in the eyes of man and god.
I wouldn't want to stand in front of my god and tell him all I did was destroy.
05:36 PM on 10/29/2011
This makes me sick to my stomach. I don't care if it was the devil himself, people should not be treated that way. At the end of the day, nobody ever said taking the high road was easy.
11:56 PM on 11/02/2011
Yeah but some things have to be done, thank god there is still people willing to do the deed.
02:46 AM on 11/05/2011
Tim Leahey, You seem to have very little Love in your heart. No human nor animal should be treated in these ways. You are not helping anyone by throwing in your 2 cents of hate in reply to sincere peoples comments. I know the world seems hopeless because of the injustice and violence, but comments like yours come from a heart that has not seen or dreamed of a peaceful future. What I mean to say is your attitude and belief about violence only holds humanity back, join us and create unity for all.

Even though Gaddafi did some pretty bad things in his time. I can't help but feel sorry for him when watching this video. He looks completely helpless, and he has an expression like he is expecting the worst from this mob.

I agree he dad a look of pure fear on his face
