Occupy Chicago: Nurses Protest City Hall, Emanuel Stands His Ground (VIDEO)

As promised, a group of nurses joined Occupy Chicago protesters outside of City Hall Monday to speak out against Saturday night's arrests in Grant Park.

Nurses who set up a first aid station near the park were among the 130 people arrested late Saturday into early Sunday, and some were held in Central District lockup for more than 20 hours.

“We were among the last protesters released, for no good reason that we can tell, except for they clearly knew when the media cameras had left,” Jan Rodolfo, Midwest director for National Nurses United told the Chicago Tribune. “We were tearful and exhausted and shell shocked.”

Dozens of nurses and other protesters showed up at City Hall about 10 a.m. Monday, where there was a confrontation between Mayor Rahm Emanuel's First Deputy Chief of Staff Felicia Davis.

Progress Illinois reports:

In the build up to the confrontation Davis tried to speak to a single person out of a group of approximately 150, believing they should all be able to hear. Davis blamed Occupy Chicago for weeks of cancelled meetings and said she was not in a position to do anything about the arrests.

“It’s very difficult to negotiate when the faces keep changing,” said Davis. “I’m willing to sit down and have an open and respectful dialogue. I just need to know who the the real, appropriate, valid people are to have that happen.”

After petitioning Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office last week, asking if he would grant Occupy Chicago a permit to assemble in Grant Park, more than 1,000 people showed up in the park Saturday night hoping for a sleep over. Instead, as was the case last week, protesters were arrested and charged with disturbing the peace.

"There's a balancing act," Emanuel said of the arrests Monday, according to NBC Chicago. "People have their first amendment right. It's protected and they're expressing their views. And I've expressed my understanding of those economic hardships while making sure the law is enforced."

Emanuel said he does not intend to drop charges against the protesters.

Some nurses and other activists were in jail until after 1 a.m. Monday. On their Twitter page, Occupy Chicago organizers complained of harsh treatment while in police custody. Some arrestees claim that they were unable to make their one phone call for more than 16 hours. Others said 30 men were left in a holding room with no toilet paper.

“I’m completed insulted by the way we were treated,” Rodolfo told Progress Illinois. “Nurses would never treat patients the way we were treated last night in the jail. I believe there was a great deal of effort in the taunting, in general, to make it as punitive as possible, [like] he fact they were handing out mattresses on mainstream arrests, but our mattresses were confiscated. We were told a different set of rules applied us. We were told if we were uncomfortable we should have thought about that before we stayed in Grant Park.”

Protesters told the Tribune Monday that free speech should not end at 11 p.m., and that the mayor should allow them to peacefully demonstrate without fear of arrest. Though news coverage has heavily focused on the Grant Park arrests in recent days, Occupy organizers want to make sure their message is not lost.

"Whether or not you agree with the arrests, the members of Occupy Chicago and National Nurses Union who were arrested Saturday night spent more time in jail for peaceably sitting in a park than any of the Wall Street criminals who ruined our economy, foreclosed the homes of thousands, and who continue to control our government through excessive corporate abuses," Occupy Chicago wrote on its Facebook page Monday.

The funniest thing, is that the Nurses Union that is helping the occupy folks, is guilty of just what they are fighting against. They give huge money to politicians, just like wall street.

I'm all for protesting but you protest where it's not allowed and you get arrested. Nurse, dog, cat - whatever. Boo Hoo.

Is ANYONE surprised Rahm is taking an anti-protest stance? This is the guy you voted for, and it was no secret what we would get. Voting against your own interests isn't just for Republicans anymore.

Chicago is run by a bunch of bullies, always has been always will be. The police department loves to throw around their weight, showing everyone who is boss. Its run by a bunch of ignorant individuals that have no regard for anyone - Then they're backed up by the mayor - this is the most corrupt city in the country. I hope that Occupy moves forward & results in some major changes in this city. As far as the nurses - I hope they hire an attorney & not allow this issue to die.

Rahm is an A ss.

The 1st amendment right supersedes any law governing closing a part at 11pm.

First amendment rights YES

RIGHT TO BREAK THE LAW ,,,NO
11:18 AM on 10/25/2011
Isn't that a little short sighted? What if there was a sound ordnance passed that forbid the use of bullhorns or if they enforce the loitering law in the financial districts. I think the 11pm closing for parks is there because parks are not well lit and patrolling all the parks and the entire lake front would probably involve creating a whole new police force. I think the mayor is not taking into account the circumstance which is that people are protesting peacefully and safely (they have freakin nurses providing care for crying out loud) on public grounds. I think in this circumstance the 11pm rule can be broken because the rule violates the public's 1st amendment rights.

The thing is -- those nurses who were abused simply for helping the protesters -- would help those who are getting their jollies out of it. Probably without a second thought. Even in a war where the combatants are in mortal danger, there is recognition that doctors and nurses are not combatants. This is not war, these are your fellow citizens. Shame! Shame on you.

our 1st Amendment Rights do not end at 11pm every night! Public domain is fair ground to protest and assemble!

What has happened to our country?

Plutocracy! That's What.

This is not going to end Mayor. Other cities have respected our rights as US citizens, and Chicago will be no different.

Thomas' outburst came after video of a New York City police official pepper-spraying protesters was circulated online.

Later in the video, Thomas answered questions from cameramen at the scene. He said he and both his parents have served in the military. "We fought for this country, I'm from New York City, and these cops are hurting people I fought to protect.

"There's no honor in hurting unarmed civilians, and I won't let that happen," he said.

The group Occupy Marines says, "We will support demonstrators with organization, direction, supply and logistics, and leadership."

Rahm Emmanuel is disgusting. The fact that he is a close friend of Obama's is one of the many reasons I have such contempt for Obama. You can tell a lot about a person by who their friends are. And Obama's friends are rich corrupt Wall Streeters and the likes of nurse busting Rahm Emmanuel.

Rahm is not a close friend of Obama. If he were he'd still be in the White House. Obama booted his buttt because Rahm was torpedoing his policies.

What world do you inhabit? Rahm had a chance to be king of a major city, and his Type A personality wouldn't let him turn it down. He left on his own. In fact Obama hasn't booted a single noteworthy person from his camp in his entire term.

I commend the nurses for being out there. I don’t want to condemn their presence. Chicago is doing a tremendous job with the Occupy Chicago Movement. The unification is outstanding.

If the protestors did not receive a permit for after 11pm, then they should not be there. But if they knew they were taking a risk protesting in Grant park after 11pm, then they should expect an arrest would happen.

Could the Chicago police handled matters better? Of course! But jail has never been comfortable for anyone. And I don’t suppose it ever will be. Surely, a nurse will never treat a patient like they were treated in jail. I do not know how anyone could make such a comparison.
11:39 AM on 10/25/2011
But isn't this just a silly game of arrest and re-arrest? I mean the protesters are being arrested because of the 11pm rule not because they are violating other people's rights or committing violent acts.

I do agree with you about the whole jail thing...when the hell was jail supposed to be all warm a cuddly

There's this thing called the Eighth Amendment, and it even applies to the convicted. In this case they made group arrests and deliberately made these people's stay as miserable as possible. Why do you support the thugs?

Need to go with a one day general strike by all workers in America to show support for OWS.

We need to shut the entire economy down until those in power leave and a system responsive to the people is put in place, as they did in Egypt. One day would still be dismissed by the corporate media as "frustration" and not revolt.

Question: Who are two dictators who use brutality and unlawful detention to repress protests?
